Is blood magic any good ?
Personally i think they are not. The trade-off for going into blood magic is simply not good. Going into blood magic at the moment is only good for mm builds and support builds, but necro support builds are more a wvw/pve (though support is not needed for pve) thing then spvp.
I also dont think life siphon builds will ever be good as long life leach doesnt work in ds (well unless of cause Anet buffs them to op levels).
Not worth it in a normal power build. You lose a lot of either damage or defense, which isn’t made up for. You’ll either die too quickly to use your new sustain, or not have enough damage to make it matter.
Healing power is especially bad for the necromancer because their normal heals already do so much for them along with the fact they still can’t heal or be healed in DS its advantages are not real advantages. Since you can’t even steal life in Death shroud it hurts that much more.
If you use a lot of wells, its worth the 20 points for the CD trait just because wells have such a long cooldown to begin with.
I don’t think I’d ever go a full 30, though, not until siphoning gets a legitimate buff.
Dagger Mastery (10), Vampiric Master (20), and Ritual Mastery (20) are the only trait skills in the Blood Magic line I find are worth spending points on and even then they are situational. If your PvP build runs dagger, all minions, or mostly wells, it might be ok. Otherwise, do not bother.
Terror, DS, spectral, Dhuumf, corruption, marks; these builds just do not benefit from Blood Magic and, as many said already, siphons/heals do not scale well and likely will not improve much, if at all, after the next patch.
Don’t do it! Run for your life!! Get out while you still can!!!
It’s too late…for me. But you can still save yourself!
Been playing a siphoning build since launch and nothing else (4,000+ hours put into a blood necro). It can work – barely – if you don’t mind having to constantly play to your best every second of combat while burdened with poorly designed attrition, life stealing, and sustain mechanics. Think of it as GW2 Hard Mode. There are certainly easier and less frustrating builds available.
I like mark of blood on roll, but then again, I just get it while I’m on my way to Vampiric Master.
Sorry Mark of Evasion. It’s not you, it’s me!
Transfusion is an amazing trait for supporting, Ritual of Life is strong, Fetid Consumption, Mark of Evasion, there are a number of good traits in the tree. The issue isn’t the traits alone, its that the full playstyle that the traits would support doesn’t exist. In the case of life siphoning this is because blood magic is the only tree that gives synergy (whereas any other build would have synergy from at least every major trait), or because support isn’t worth it.

It doesn’t really even give that much support, does it? It just gives survivability, and not even that much survivability.
If it actually scaled with something (coughhealingpower) that might be nice but I’m not gonna get my hopes up.

This. I used to run heavy Death/Blood for months after release like some sort of masochistic freak.
If you like hard mode, go right ahead.
my pvp power necro uses 20 points in blood, i find the life steals to be an amazing addition to your damage, plus when you have Locust Swarm, 2 Wells and dagger auto attacks all hitting you can actually see a decent bit of sustain!
its one of my favourite pvp builds because it can hit really hard and still take alot of punishment
heres what i use: http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=;04-0;1kHVB0G4sJVJ0;9;5J-JT;147;247-51B5J;4sV2DsV2D5Bd (i used to use ground targeted wells as my 20 point trait in curses, but since dagger is the go-to weapon for power necro i was just clicking the floor beneath me anyway, so i tried switching to the warhorn buffing trait and longer uptime Locust Swarms have proven to be irreplaceable imho)

Wellomancer works really well with siphoning, especially with the prot trait for wells for dmg mitigation. At least it has for me in W3 zerg conditions.
Small-man and solo, prolly not so much.
I troll because I care
Blood magic is really strong no one knows how to tank dmg with life siphons so its perceived as weak….this is ok though because now its all getting buffed and I’ll never die again

No, please, saying Blood magic is really strong isn’t correct at all.
If you like it, it’s fine, but if you force reality like this to accomodate your fantasies, then it’s not.
Most of the traits are subpar, even Mesmer has better minors.
For Siphoning on paper the numbers of potential healing are high, but in the reality they aren’t worth and won’t sustain you in any situation:
- In Pvp people will run out of your siphoning wells, or kite you enough to make your siphons from melee or locust swarm so small it won’t be enough to soak damage or sustain you, it won’t even save you from bursts.
- In Pve you need almost 5 targets on your siphoning wells to make their healing effective, and anyway, both bosses and mobs will hit you way harder (Consequentially if you go in DS to absorb the burst you waste all your well cooldowns).
Anyway your team will suffer more for the lack of DPS than for the lack of a fake support.
Transfusion is nice 5k healing on a channeling, of course, but on a 40 seconds cooldown and still interruptible and not instantaneous.
And don’t forget, Just by entering Death Shroud makes useless most of your siphoning and regenerating traits… Just thank god DS scales with Vitality..

This laughs in the face of 30 Trait points spent on this trait line.

An awesome DeathShroud build that… doesn’t heal under DS on critical hits, nice.

Well if you think no one knows to use life siphons correctly would you be so nice and enlighten us how to?
I tried many blood magic builds in spvp and all felt subpar to builds like the 30/10/0/0/30 or even 20/20/0/0/30.
With the new patch going into deathmagic for unholy sancturary will probably even give better sustain then life leach builds ever have…

The tree overall? Mark of Evasion, Ritual of Life, Transfusion, and Deathly Invigoration all directly give support to allies. Ritual Mastery and Fetid Consumption also give some support, however it is either indirect (wells come up faster, wells have team utility/support), or based on a bug (FC still removes conditions from allies as well, IIRC).
Necros overall have the strongest team healing of any class, and some of the best raw healing power scaling, the issue is just that it tends to not be as useful as other support (PvE/WvW), or is based on mechanics that don’t do well (self-centered AoE, plus little else to offer).
If there were was a great grandmaster support trait, plus another 50 trait points worth of good support in other trees, we’d see necro supports. But as it is we’ve only really got 20 traits worth of good support, without the kind of backing that a guardian support would have (super tanky + tons of support).
My build in pvp right now is power necro, but i’d like to get more regen…I checked some traits of blood magic and it looks good. Is it viable in spvp ?
honestly if your a power necro go 30 0 0 10 30
reapers might / training of the master / close to death
0
0
dagger mastery
vital persistence / near to death / deathly perception
I think it’s the meta spvp power mancer build although I could be wrong.
I’ve used it in my spvp games and it does excellent just make sure to build up and make proper use of your death shroud.
i’ll just say it bluntly the siphons in blood magic suck. your not going to notice a 27 health gain on hit to make them have any sort of a point you’ll have to wreck your power mancers dps even then it’s still going to be pathetic to very VERY lack luster.

It works a lot better when you trait for it and use it in combination with wells and locust swarm.
I used to run a blood magic build in GW1, which took a lot of effort. But Anet has been unable to make blood magic viable for over 7 years now. I’d say, abandon it, it’s not worth it.

Maybe you could run 0/0/10/30/30 after the patch with ritual of protection, well cooldowns, trasfusion, deathly invigoration, Unyielding Blast, near to death, and Renewing blast. I’ll be trying this with some clerics soldiers mix, and it’ll probably work well enough in WvW. I wouldn’t get hopes up that necros will be the new eles any time soon though.
Also, anyone who thinks siphons are in a good place either doesn’t understand what being tanky means, or hasn’t ever actually tried them. Vampiric, and Vampiric Precision simply don’t do enough to give necromancers reasonable sustain. To give an idea most classes have a master level trait in their healing power line that heals at least 100 per second. Necros need 3 traits to hit that level, and don’t have near the level of damage mitigation other classes do.
extra dodges, real stability, mobility skills,
burst skills, sustain, or good support. GG ANET.
with the new trait that allows healing in deathshroud it might work…

There’s really no point in explaining my build or how to tank dmg via life siphons since everything will change and be stronger in a couple days, if you’re still curious feel free to msg me in game.
Also I don’t think siphons are in a good spot they definitely need the buff they are receiving, however they are the reason why many perceive the blood magic trait line as a whole to be weak even when it offers many useful traits.

Does you build use siphon wells?
If so i will pass. I hate that trait…

Whaaaa?_?
First you claim
“I think you are forcing your fantasies on reality 0_0 lol its really strong i’ll show you.”
then you say
“There’s really no point in explaining my build”
May I ask what’s the sense in the position you took on this thread?
How many years are you?
You claim a position without arguing and justifying your answers with vague “I’ll show you”, “ther’s no point explaining”…
And what about this “All is getting buffed”, “everything will change and be stronger in a couple days”.
This is… extremely abstract, imprecise and senseless.
If you want to engage someone in a discussion regarding your weird ideas please do it in a proper manner, argue, explain, elseway the result is going to be totally stupid.

Since you, kind Sir, have admitted that you’ve been playing siphoning since launch, riddle me this: What has noticeably changed in the Blood Magic traits, say, in the past two years? I ask this, because I recently came back on after a long hiatus, thinking I’d go run amok for a while, when I noticed that all my points were refunded, so I assume a lot changed for necros in the interim.
This was the build I had at the time, taking into account whatever the stats used to be for each trait (I was heavy into WvW but not really into sPvP):
http://www.gw2db.com/skill-builds/1629-schmoopies-pvp-necro
I had hella fun with that build (I’d often tuck myself under enemy keep walls and just drain everyone on the walls above me) – not sure what exactly was so Hard Mode about it (maybe I am just old, maybe I played too many grindy Korean MMO’s) but I did sample a lot of builds before this, and this was what felt natural for me:

http://youtu.be/uYRE1wWXW9Y
So I humbly ask you: Do I stick with the Devil I Know (and love), or do I try something else, because they really tinkered way too much with Blood Magic since I last played?
