Karma Temple Gear or Use Karma Elsewhere?
I think that really the only other thing to use Karma on at that point is Obsidian Shards from Balthazar’s temple.
That said, I’d highly recommend experimenting with gear that’s Masterwork 80s if you’re trying to decide on a build. It won’t be as strong, but you’ll get a good feel for if that direction could work. It’s also drastically more affordable to change your mind.
It’s pretty obvious, and nobody’s impressed.
Karma gear is perfectly fine for your starter set. Ive never needed karma for anything other than obsidian shards for my legendary. I also wouldnt save gold for armour unless you really cant get the stats you want quickly enough. Once you hit 80 you should start doing dungeons and earning tokens to buy the sets with the stats you need for whatever build you want. You also earn a lot of gold and karma doing dungeons. You can also make some nice money with karma if you have no plans to use it on anything else (Orrian jewelry boxes).
I can farm karma faster than gold, so I did use my karma on all my 80 and I’ve made that karma back time after time. Even wasted 300k on Sunbeads to try to make money and craft Beaded weapons. Karma comes and goes and I’m never missing it. (No I don’t farm CoF and all the other farming spots, my limited hours of gameplay are only for fun things, namely WvW
)
On the other hand, if you’ve done a lot of WvW and got some badges, I would suggest buying exotic armors at the Master Armor trader in your Citadel. For a cheap price (max 1g/piece) + a hundred badges you’ve got yourself a nice outfit, and there’s a lot to choose from now (Carrion, Rabid, Berserker, Cleric etc). Your karma can then be spent on things like Shards for your legendary.
Exotic weapons can also be bought in WvW for the same small price.
Depends on how much you farm gold vs karma I guess.

QUESTION: Is the Orr Temple Karma gear the best use of my karma stash? Or should I just grind for gold and buy stuff and use the karma for something else?

I said i can farm 300+ dungeon tokens faster then i can farm 40000 karma… that’s what i said. I can’t get 40000 karma in 1-2 hours, but i sure can get 300+ dungeon tokens…

Most gear is “either or”, really. Since you’re making a necro, you might wanna consider what kind of necro first, though.
I’ve recently wanted to changed my Necro’s build, which prompted getting an entire Rabid set…. except that rabid gear can’t be crafted and, as far as trinkets go at least, Karma is by far the best way to go… WvW does not sell non-soldiers trinkets, and TP prices for exotic Rabid trinkets is, for the most part, utterly insane. So I stocked up on karma and hit the temple of Dwayna for it. Very useful.
If you’re not going for one of those “hard to acquire” pieces, though, doesn’t matter.

Well it really depends on what your goal is. If you plan on getting a legendary weapon, it’s better to save karma for obsidian shards.
And I don’t know how much karma you have but Karma armor cost quite some amount for a whole set. Just make sure you checked it first.
Also you would also want to look at the stats you want first. You can only get Soldier, Rabid & Magi stats from karma vendor. Although rabid is great for condition necro, you may be running other type of build. If you need any stats other than those 3 I mentioned, you have to look elsewhere.

cof p1+2 > switch char> repeat?? I don’t know if DR will hit that way.

Not trying to misquote you, and I apologize if it came across that way! I’ve edited my original posting.
It simply wasn’t clear to me what you thought of Karma-bought gear in general, since in my case all the banked karma — from several characters I’ve leveled — is essentially free to me at this point. I wasn’t sure if you thought karma-bought gear also wasn’t all that great, or if karma could be better-spent elsewhere, or if it simply was a matter of your playstyle/time and that’s it.
(I’d still like to hear that part. If you suddenly got 250-500,000 karma on a character that just hit 80, would you use it on the Temple exotics or not?)

@Afya: good point about the overall stats. I guess I’d be forced to choose Soldier or Rabid, then? Would attempting to mix-n-match for a hybridish gear set end up with a good-at-nothing set? I was hoping that I’d get a reasonable set that would let me PvE and WvW without being the guy that the group had to carry, let me experiment with builds, and then give me a chance to slowly replace the gear once I figured it all out. (Lots of dungeon runs are not really an option for me schedule-wise.)
Karma gear cannot be salvaged of any level; no runes, no ecto, no T6 mats.
With that said, karma armor have unique skins you may like the look of. Temple armor and accessories are also pretty solid as exotic sets and you can skin over them or crunch new runes, crests, or jewels over the stock runes. Instead of paying gold, you can pay karma so chose what works for you at that moment.
The only other uses of karma are to purchase recipes, shards, and a few other little things. You will find it easy to make karma if you play a lot of PvE and get the dailies and monthlies.
Tip: Save containers of karma and karma boosters until you have a need for a big purchase. Then use a booster before consuming only what you think you need.
Btw, Nemesis’ point is valid but the game participation rewards (daily and monthly) will also build karma. There are limited ways to spend each form of game currency. There are also the large events that always reward you with at least one rare and a chance at an even better item. Soon, you will have multiple sets of armor, accessories, and a pile of weapons.
@Anchoku: Yep, I’ve been saving the containers and boosters from several characters that haven’t made it to 80 (a couple of 40’s and a 71) plus my Necro that’s at 76 and that I’m excited to be my first to 80. I’m hoping that if it’s wise to get Karma gear I’ll be able to get a whole set in one swoop once I hit 80.

Yes… only it’s p1 + 2 switch, p1 + 2 switch, p1 + 2 cause i have 3 characters… and if i need any other stats i go into TA. Takes a bit longer but it’s still within 3 hours…

Sorry if that came a bit impulsive, it’s really late here and i am tired.
It’s a big difference between money for exotics or exotics from dungeons… as the game is at the moment dungeon exotics are faster to obtain then gold exotics (but there are exceptions)… and still faster then karma exotics. So… it’s important that this doesn’t get misinterpreted.
Keep your karma… or get unique accessories like it was described here… You might want to go for a legendary at one point. I personally have 1 million karma saved up and about 180 karma jugs… lol…
