I’m about to hit level 40 and have been using this build guide up until now:

http://www.guildwars2guru.com/topic/61780-powerleveling-pve-aoe-necromancer-guide/

I’m basically using AOE wells and marks to pull multiple mobs at once. I know the guide is old so I’m not sure if it’s info is still relevant. So I’m looking for advice about respecing once I hit 40.

Should I do it or should I continue to develop this build a bit more? If I should respec, what sort of build should I go with for PVE?

Virtually anything is fine for leveling, but I’ve yet to find something more laughably simple than the minion master to hit the level cap. There’s no “one way” to build anything, but something like this should get you started:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fQAQNBIhZYkQrVvWjePBIzIaqnZwN4QKAQaA

You’re basically unkillable while leveling. You’ll receive so much healing from the dagger’s autoattack and your minions’ attacks that you’ll likely stand motionless and still solo almost any champion you encounter. The build also places a strong emphasis on power, so you yourself will feel useful and chew through things quite readily.

The staff offers you some handy AoE when required & Staff2’s Mark of Blood can offer a nice regen to your whole minion brood.

It also leaves a utility slot open to play with (Signet of Spite is nice for extra dps while Locust is great for covering ground quickly) as well as a few trait options to customize to your liking. I’ll still hop back to it now and then for some extra-easy fun on nights where I’m just not mentally engaged and want simple, mindless fun.

I am surprised how many players ask this question. There is no one build for leveling. Focus on learning how make your own builds and evaluate how effective they are in different situations or for different play styles. That is the only way to develop a deep understanding of the profession. Give every single skill, utility, piece of equipment, and trait skill a thorough work-out so you know how they function and interact. Retrait often and compare how your weapon choices interact but do not fret on armor or having optimal traits. Use the time to learn.

Thanks for the advice. I went with the minion master build but I’ll keep an open mind and try out different builds as I progress to find something that works for my play style.

I do understand them… When you have some time playing, you can study different builds and compare them, and then developt the build that better suits you.

But when you are starting to play, you really don’t understand anything. Should I trait power to kill faster? Or toughness to die slower? Which is the build that will help me to live longer and play better, while I study my char?

I do believe that, at max lvl, there isn’t a right build to do something. For example, my main is a powermancer, and my build is different that every other build I had see. Even those builds made by who I consider to be the best necro players on this forum. But this is my build, and work like a charm with my playstyle and my abilities.

But I also believe that, when you are starting to play the game, or even a new class, there are some builds that are standards de facto. Suggestions that can help a newbie to start with the right foot.

“Hey, the main necro builds are power-, condi- and minion-mancer. Each one of these are good to <some things>, and bad at <some things>. Use build <X> if you like to play more or less like <some ways>. If you are going to try the build <X>, max first <this> traits, and look for <this> equipment”…

Those are just some comments, some suggestions, that can help a lot the new players to make their chars more playable, and to enjoy the class at low levels, don’t you think?

PS: imho, we should make those “newbie suggestion list”, and fix them at forum’s start.
