I’ve only recently started playing necro and I love it, but I do not love the amount of bugs we have (Especially that god kitten flesh golem)

And lately the developers (Since they got that cake) have been posting here an awful lot more then I’ve seen before

But over-all this. I really have 2 questions for them, and the rest of the necro community.

1: While some of you, (And most) say you don’t understand DS yet – I’m very confused by this. It’s a pretty straight forward process of a skill, if a little underwhelming.

I’d be pretty happy to see the damage go up by 400-500 (Maybe less) points or, the 2 skill’s debuffs lasting longer, or 3’s fear lasting 2-3 seconds instead of 1. – After all. We are pretty scary!

2: Another weapon. I’ve got a mesmer alongside a necromancer, and when it comes down to utility skills and weapon skills, Mesmer and the Ele just feel like they have more.

The mesmer has
Sword
Greatsword
Staff
Scepter
Focus
Torch
Pistol

Necromancer has
Staff
Scepter
Focus
Dagger
Axe
Warhron

And finally, the Ele has
Staff
Dagger
Scepter
Focus
But as we know, they also get 20 skills per 2 handed weapon and so on.

Now, granted we only have 1 less then the Ele I feel like my playstyle is more linear and I have less room to move around in my builds to produce a desired playstyle.

Again, what I would love to see is just another weapon added to our weapon skills. Most people I know that have played necro do enjoy the staff, but it’s just not the same as having an Ele staff or a Mesmer staff. Your marks are ranged yes, but it’s not the same.

I feel that at range (sometimes) is where our weakness is (And I’m most likely wrong).

Now, I don’t think that Necromancers with greatsword is a good idea. It would like stupid. Swords would work and also Torch (green fire anyone?) but I’d really REALLY prefer it be a pistol or a rifle.

Only 2 professions have the rifle, an amazing weapon in it’s own-right on both classes that have it.

Only 3 professions have a pistol.

I know It’s not easy to program, make and design an entire new skill set. I assume there would be conversation as either to make it offhand or main hand (Or both) but I really think the necro community would appreciate this – And I really think you guys could make some kick kitten skills.

As in… Number 5! Launch Minion!

I don’t really understand why people say Greatsword doesn’t make sense on a Necro, then suggest sword, and even a rifle/pistol…

Look at any Necromancer/Warrior hybrid (Shadow/Dread Knight), great sword fits perfectly.

But w/e. =p

I just want another weapon, anything.

Greatsword is over-used and over-rated. it’s also the most expensive weapon type on trading post

And greatsword would fit perfectly if we had heavy armor. We don’t, we have cloth.

A pistol that can fire green flames or the like would be great. It’s about making use of what weapons we have available to us. Not “OMG GREATSWORDS XDDDDD”

Eww, nooo! Our set makes sense (except axe, to me). Why would a mage use a rifle or pistol? I don’t even see why a mage should be wielding a Greatsword (yeah, you mesmer, I am talking about you on the Greatsword and the pistol). We may just need some more things for our weapons, like, more conditions and boons, or just do more in general. The ele can fly through their elements and do many things, the mesmer…let’s just not talk about how many things they can do. We are kind of limited in what our weapons do. The weapons that have the most effects are our off-hands.

It would be good if we got a passive from DS or something to modify our weapons (kinda like Guardian and his burning on the 5th strike), but I don’t see that happening. Those strange ideas just won’t fit in with the Necro at all. I am sorry, but I just can’t see them.

@Duleshna Agreed, especially the “swinging and falling down” part.

Necros have a pretty ok set of weapons, so I don’t really see a need for a greatsword. IMO it just doesn’t fit Necro class. Necros are light armored, weak, sneaky little maggots that should use dark arts to defeat their enemies. Not brute force. Brute force comes from death and despair, not from metal. I can’t even imagine my Necro wielding anything heavy. He would probably swing it one and then fall down. If you want a sort of a dark knight character, why not try a warrior instead?

Yet mesmers use greatswords and don’t wear heavy armor.

HoX’s in AoC were clothie mages that used 2 handers and were a mage/melee hybrid.

I don’t see the argument. Besides we’re not squishy.

What is with the all the “realism” all of a sudden. “A necro couldn’t hold a greatsword” Really? lol.

Archmagel. - I like our current weapon sets – The idea is to introduce an entirely new weapon because we lack one and are forced into using builds that don’t use the broad spectrum of weapons we have. But that’s a design problem.

Duleshna- Again, I like all the weapons we have currently and I don’t think a greatsword fits. but a rifle or a pistol would fit quite nicely and could have a nice dark arts feel to it.

Knote – AOC was terrible and that class was a massive glass cannon that sucked balls in the later levels – Tempest of set was much better

I never said we were squishy.

I never said we couldn’t hold greatswords.

Ok, idea that might change my thoughts. What skills would you think we would have with the Greatsword?

The pattern I noticed with necro-Weapons is this: all Necro-Weapons are some kind of morbid and cruel Totems! The Staff, Focus and Scepter as standard Attire of the caster, for rituals and summonings. The Dagger as a sign of Stealth and Murder. The Axe as a Murder Weapon for the common man, a deaht out of rage, going into the Shed to get the xe and simply strike that sod down, the weapon of choice for the ordinary madman and the executioneer (I admit the GS would fit the Executioneer-Theme!) And the Warhorn for the Wail of Death, the calling to the Dead and Dread. The Dark Hunt out of Bloodlust and Murderer’s Joy as an Perversion of the noble, protective and caring nature of the Ranger.
I find GS overrated tbh. They’re everywhere and already get too much love in terms of Power and Skins (3 kitten Legendaries are GS!).
I find Torches a way better thought.
Torches are based around the burning-Condition. Adding it to the Necro may be a big step for the devs, but anyways, it’s plausible. Guardians and Mesmers can also add Remove Conditions with it. A Perversion of such a theme would be appropriate. it could have a single target Fear+Burn (Come ON they fit perfectly together) and a combo field that isn’t darkness or poison.
Another though would be offhand Axe!
In both offhand cases it has a Whirling AoE and a Single target Attack.
The Necro Axe focusses around Direct Damage and LF. During Beta we were promised a cone-like Slash Attack for the NecroAxe and it seems as if it would be our AoE-DD weapon. Now we have one longCD skill for that and a line-DD with Staff1.
So why not give it a swipe-like ability.

Knote – I think you haven’t read the original post….this entire thread isn’t about balance, it’s about adding a new weapon because we only have 6 while the mesmer has 7 and the Ele has over 60 skills which amounts to 10 weapons

Everyone else – Torch works, I’d be very happy about that but I’d love if it was a green flame.
I loved your idea about how the weapons are put into the area of death and despair, I feel that the pistol would fit so perfectly into that setting as it’s been a morbid piece of human history for the last…what? 350 years? I have no idea.

Archmagel – Intresting…I hadn’t thought about the skills. I mean I think it would be ranged, or melee with a cleave (as we sorely lack that, as why I wanted rifle/pistol) but I’d think explode minion would work nicely as a skill, Taint steel could also work, ranged skill that causes weakness and vulnerbillity. Sweep legs, crippling. A gap closer would be nice (Think ranger greatsword launch) but I really have no idea

Any 2-handed weapon would do for me to be honest, as that is what we currently lack the most. But pistols? Just…. No….. I’d rather take a 1-handed mace/sword or something.

IMO if necro got another weapon option it should be another bladed weapon. I like how their skills get focused through axes and daggers. I would be in favor of sword/sword or sword/axe. Dual wielding axes might be fun.

I would say torch but I don’t much like torch skills.

For the ones that want to see greatsword for Necro’s, what range do you want to see on it ? Cause if Necro is to get a new weapon (witch I doubt), I want to see an alternative to the Staff when it comes to long range (1200)…. Cause in my opinion Staff is boring and very one-dimensional….

To be perfectly honest when it comes to weapons, I think the Mace would be a great fit if you think about it. We, as Necromancers, are essentially priests or clerics of darker powers over life and death. I like that we can use daggers, for example, which have long been instruments important in rituals, especially sacrifices, throughout history. A Mace/Hammer wielding “dark priest/cleric” seems rather fitting in a peverse way, since it feeds into the popular belief that during medieval battles, clergy used maces in warfare to avoid bloodshed (this is of course questionable as the evidence is sparse, as stated in the wiki page for Mace (club):

It is popularly believed that maces were employed by the clergy in warfare to avoid shedding blood (sine effusione sanguinis). The evidence for this is sparse and appears to derive almost entirely from the depiction of Bishop Odo of Bayeux wielding a club-like mace at the Battle of Hastings in the Bayeux Tapestry, the idea being that he did so to avoid either shedding blood or bearing the arms of war.

As it stands, only two professions make use of the Mace – Warriors and Guardians. Don’t get me wrong, that’s fitting, but the mace in and of itself throughout history holds significance as a symbol of authority and has ritualistic applications. As such I think it would be pretty awesome for us to utilise Maces.

… And Hammers. But seriously that’s just me. I don’t like Greatswords, I like giant Hammers.

@Kaarnak, that’s a good point….. If a weapon is going to be added (where have people got this from anyway ?), then I would like to see a long range weapon as I said earlier…..

I’m pretty sure a mace wouldn’t be long range….. 1200 range is always on two-handed weapons, so a hammer would be nice, I actually didn’t think of that at all….

I wouldn’t mind a sword or greatsword to be in melee range, so long as we get some form of gap closer with it. I’m thinking something like a Demon Rift or something where we “traverse through the underworld” in the form of a blink. Kind of like a Nightcrawler from X-Men sort of thing.

Ok, idea that might change my thoughts. What skills would you think we would have with the Greatsword?

Personally if it were to happen, something akin to being stronger with more enemies around you. AoE Lifetaps, aoe Debuffs, and sort of the opposite of GS Guardian.

Some kind of epic looking, low cd cleave #2 attack that steals life for each condition on them. Auto’s could be slow cleaving attacks that applies Weakness/Vuln. 4th skill could be just a simple 600 aoe that attaches to targets and lifesteals as long as they stay in range, if they move too far it shatters for dmg and chills. 3rd skill could maybe be like Infiltrator’s Strike, 600 range shadowstep that drops a dark or poison field, and if your target is in melee attack range you can teleport them back with you. 5th skill could be a defensive move, a 300-450 range Aura that does a mini daze every couple seconds, like 1/4 Daze per 2 seconds over 6 seconds and maybe a random condition and a bit of swiftness.

Some of that might be OP, but it’s just an example of how i’d view the weapon set.

If the Greatsword were to be a ranged weapon like Mesmer’s, then I’d prefer to have it be sort of Minion Master ish. Basically spawning temporary weak minions that function like Phantasms. Could have a reaper pet with good uptime that harvests Life Force for you. A very low cooldown bone minion spam, small decent dmg and a bleed and has a leap to keep up with targets, etc.

Frankly, I could care less really what weapon, I’d just like another weapon period. Even if it means Rifle which would just seem SOOOO out of place. I’d use it.

Actually an OH dagger is completely different from the MH dagger. So it’s the same number.

The nice thing about the necro is that mesmers are trapped into focus OH because it’s there only way to get runspeed. While I like having warhorn on necro, it isn’t a hard requirement, since you do have other options.

Lol, why do I think of the game “Overlord” when I see this?

This makes me more interested in the concept, especially considering that I am not a huge fan of the melee weapons we have. This would most definitely find its way into my weapon swap for when the enemy decides to get up close to me.

Necromancers are weird in that they have many things that work so well at close range despite being casters.
Wells, Dark Pact, Life Transfer
Even Mark of Blood and Putrid Mark are much better at close range despite being on a 1200 range weapon.
When not playing in a group or with Minions anyway.

Yet we only have 1 melee attack and only 1 Weapon on land has a blast finisher.
Sure, we have a finisher off a trait and a few from Utilities but most of them just feel clumsy.

A melee weapon with cleaving attacks and a finisher or two would be perfect.
I’d say Scythe, but since it seems Scythes are just fancy Staffs now I’ll say Greatsword instead.

I’d like to see the Greatsword be a lot like our Spear is.
Very rough ideas for a Weapon Skill bar:
1. A chain of cleaving hits. Build up Life Force and/or spread conditions.
2. Whirl Finisher. Inflicts Conditions and/or builds up Life Force.
3. A teleport, a leap, a pull, Swiftness or just Immobilize.
4. AoE pull. A Dark Vortex, if you will. Knocks down for a short time and Chills.
5. AoE fear. 2 sec or more duration, balanced by limited range and long cooldown.

Graphically the chain of hits could be physical but the rest of the skills should (imo) look more magical.
Things like plunging the Greatsword to the ground (like a Mesmer) to create a black vortex around you as opposed to physically whirling around.

I’d love to get a hammer on my Necro. I would absolutely hate getting a greatsword – four other professions already get them, it’d be pretty ridiculous to give greatswords to another, whereas only two professions have hammers so far. Hammer fits a Necro thematically more anyway, in my opinion.

Obviously this is basically all just hopeful wishing, as I would very highly doubt Necros will be getting a new weapon any time soon. There are many bigger issues to worry about.
