MM in PvE and ? in WvW
Just talk to any necromancer trainer in a city to re-spec. and for PvP you might want to change death nova into the grand master trait that causes minions to remove boons on auto attack.
That or go 20 in spite, 20 in death magic, and 30 into blood so your minions draw conditions off of you.

I was hoping there would be a method without having to respec just for effectively playing WvW.

It only costs like 3 silver. Respecing is extremely easy.
If you don’t want to respec, you can simply pick up the grand master trait that lets minions remove boons instead of death nova.

I have bit tried different things and personally 20 spite, 30 death, 20 blood has been most to my liking.
in www i would recommend using flesh wurm as you can choose where it appears so you can put it down or up the walls to attack things or then behind you to provide you quick escape/stun break
but don’t be afraid to try different things yourself, it is not that expensive.
Mass retaliation is good in WvW because of all the effects flying around. Switch to Well of Blood and Staff if not using them already, and take Mark of Evasion in Blood Magic. Since dodging is now a blast finisher, you can throw a well down, then dodge into it, staff 4, and explode the rat-type minions for 16s of AoE retaliation. Any AoE used on you and your minions will cause serious damage.

Wow, didn’t know dodging was a blast finisher. I’ll have to test tonight. When did this change (or have I just missed it all this time). Also, the wiki doesn’t list dodging as a blast finisher.
It’s only a blast finisher when you take the Mark of Evasion trait. Sorry, I didn’t make that clear.
Once they fix the field location bug on Spectral Wall, you can give Chaos Armor to you and all your minions with it ^^ that utility slot is a lot to give up in a minion build, though.
