So yeah, now that minion masters seem to be in much better shape and in a relatively good spot, I’ve decided to make a necro. But I’ve seen both power and condition builds posted and used by guild mates, is there a general consensus on what works best or does it just depend on preference?

Unrelated: I really hate the Topic Title length’s limit.

I prefer power, I’ll list why but the cool part about MM is it’s flexability so it’s up to you.

Reasons for building power over conditions
1. I run 20 in blood and power effects vampiric master (albeit slightly) which increases minion DPS and (once again slightly) increases HPS

2. Minions AI responds best with single target attacks and our power weapons, Axe, &Dagger are great at this.

3. Being that you are pretty much required to take 20 points into spite and death magic (and I also recommend 20 into blood) your not left with much room in your build for buffing conditions.

4. I’m going to repeat #1 here because it’s really important… Vampiric Master is an awesome trait, the extra healing is fun but the point is the extra damage (it adds up faster than you think)

Power:

30% minion dam is in Spite/power line.

Vamp Master from heals, now dose more dam per minion per hit, the more power you have.

Don’t ask others, ask yourself. Try all builds while leveling. While the builds won’t be complete pre-80, you still get a glimpse of the playstyle. People can tell you what’s best and what’s horrible, but doesn’t mean you’ll like it. I, myself always find certain class-weapon combination bad/boring. Scepter ele, staff mesmer, axe necro etc. Some of those builds are stated as great, while some are horrible, but I just don’t like it. So try it yourself.

MMs great for leveling as well, once you have 30 points in death magic (50% hp) skill points are easy mode, so is everything accept champs lol.

PVE:
Minions don’t scale with your stats. They are only buffed by your traits. You can pretty much choose either way.
Imo there is more synergy with power though:

  • trait placements
  • axe1 buffs their damage (axe1 shudder :/)
  • playstyle (minions complicate bringing together large groups and have to run to your target before attacking when you use them in a ranged build)

(I have only used them in map exploration up to the lvl 80 zones though)

Power. Vulnerability is the only thing you can do that synergizes with minions. (also weakness and chill to an extent) making axe+focus a must have.

Can someone post a link to the actual traits and build for a MM power (not cond) build? I haven’t played Nec in a long time but I’d like to try solo roaming (farming T6 nodes.) I’d need swiftness and some survivability.

I like it so far, I left sigils/runes and equipment out because even within a power build I use different things for different situations. One common theme is I usually build a bit tougher as a MM because i feel like my DPS does not suffer all that much when not running full zerker (obviously it suffers some but that’s just my play-style)

This is the Power MM necro build ive been using thus far exact gears and everything and havnt had any real trouble with it in pve now in WvW you might just wanna run a normal condi build or well build because minions die way to easily in WvW making it kinda useless to run.

But anyway this build is really good for dungeons Plus Death nova is the bomb> never leave home without it. Now As to why i chose staff is basically for the controll of the weapon along with the perma regan if u dont like to switch out much great for putting regan on allies aswell as urself 8 sec it lasts with a 6 sec cooldown Staff is great for this so thats why i chose it over say mainhand dagger and stuff.

I tried MM today, randomly picking up all the traits that sounded cool and ended up with the exact same build tattoohead posted (+full zerker :>).
I chose axe because your contribution to your overall dps is lower than in a non-MM build, so the difference between dagger and axe is lower. Plus i figured with vulnerability stacking the minions might actually make up the the damage difference.

its really personally pref as to choosing axe over dagger personally i run a zerker MM necro build so.. im not inclined to stay in melee range alot without taking alot of damage myself so thats basically why i chose axe over dagger and tbh.. i just think axe is better weapon imo.. vuln.. rapid burst skill retal its pretty great its not bad to choose axe over dagger so its a good way to go i mean lets be honest pve ? dagger siphon not that great mediocre damage, auto attacks does OK burst damage but ur staying in melee range and depending on ur build that can be a bad thing and now Dagger #3 what exactly do u need immobilize for in pve lol? so yea it speaks for itself.

Dagger beats Axe in terms of dps but axe stacks vuln and that will allow your pets to do more damage. It’s also a great source of LF.
