Meet the Reaper!
Watching the animations again. I really hope that GS spin attack isn’t a kitten self-root…
It could also be a leaping attack. It’s impossible to tell based on the proximity of the mob to the Necro.
“He’s like a man with a fork in a world of soup.”
Especially nothing slower than what we already have.
You say that like Necro’s current slow skills and slow everything isn’t already a problem.
It sure isn’t ideal, but it works for me. And my point is more that people are acting like we won’t land a single attack because it’s going to be THAT slow when that is clearly not the case since the description already applies.
When the class simply doesn’t allow you to react to for example a Thief who rolls up to you and starts weaving Pistol 4 between attacks to daze you before you can get anything off because everything is slow to activate or cast it’s a pretty big problem I’d say.
You realize if you get a defiance bar, you realize those pistol 4 will barely move it, since its only .25 seconds.
defiance during DS+ and big dmg DS moves, along with chill/etc.
yall are thinking past tense, its perfectly possible to make some pretty big changes.
the real problem is even if this build is good, yall need more from the core traits/weapons/utilities than yall currently have.
Defiance bar acts just like HP, not every way to “damage” it is equal, and not every defiance bar takes as much work to decrease. They can always change it.

yes, they said different types of CC will have different effects, and different CC durations. which means the gunshot will be fairly weak at .25 seconds
Also interested to see exactly how much chill we can get and if we get more blinds for chilling dark. If we can constantly reapply chill then it would be great in team fights. Besides all chills should be covered with vulnerability so more condi removal will have to be used.

I think that attack was a DS attack, actually. So far it seems like we saw only the pull from the greatsword. We also saw that last attack thing at the end. That could be the auto attack, or it could be the same attack as the pull “pull the foe and slice them” sort of thing.
I think that Tainted Shackles was the ice attack… and life transfer was the spin… something along those lines. We’ll see though

That “last attack” is the ability I’m worried that roots us because it has a very specific not-on-the-ground animation. :S

If you want to see my track record on predicting the impact of changes then check my post history. It is called understanding the game and understanding the mistakes anet make time and time again.
When you complain about everything, you’re bound to hit the mark on something.
You can cancel long cast times to force people to blow their dodge without wasting a CD, as well.
Lolz, have fun with that. Cancelling a cast and getting them to waste one of their tiny cds or a dodge. Incredible. Meanwhile someone spamming one and skills will be proccing in you constantly. Pvp in this game is based around spam. Condi necro was viable due to scepter 1 spam. Power necro due to life blast spam.
Necromancer/Casual Warrior
[Team] Best WvW guild of all time. EASILY.
Question: Do we still focus Reaper first on team engagement?
Also i bet the shouts have cast times or their effects will be pathetic on long cds. Probably cast times cos anet will be worried about insta cast damage

Yeah. And while they’re at it, maybe Fresh Air ele can get some more instants amirite?

They will be self rooting as well. And inflict a condition on the user like corruption skills.

Every shout animation will show the necro buckling forward crying while little green Q’s fall to the earth, to reflect the true feeling behind their players while using them.
melee necro is a cool idea, but i’m curious how they gonna sustain for that? if he is slow maybe bigger health pool, protection, regen or so?
so many questions that will be revelaed today mostly
he got slow melee skills
leap skill
shouts
just awating lke others.

One slight concern is that if you want to spec into Reaper but not use a greatsword, the first minor trait in the spec changes all of your death shroud skills to the new melee reaper ones. Could be a bit awkward if you want to make a scepter/staff build using Reaper traits (if that’s a thing).
“The reaper’s first minor trait is called Shroud Knight, and it gives the necromancer a completely new set of melee-focused skills while in Death Shroud.”
This is my concern. As a WvW player I was hoping that this specialization would add some new build diversity but it’s unlikely to be viable if we’re forced to use melee death shroud skills. AOE damaging shouts and some high damage cleaving greatsword skills might be good enough to replace staff or axe/warhorn but the standard death shroud skills are so important to the WvW meta.
We’ll see soon but so far it looks about as awful as anticipated. Condi builds will be as dead as ever, while with power the biggest change will be that picking up reaper will lock you out of any long range damage. I don’t see how chill application (which necros already have ample access to) is supposed to suddenly make up for it.
There will be more today, hopefully the anticipated defiance bar. Still, it is safe to say that the core issues that make necro absolute bottom tier: lack of sustain, utility, support, teleports or potent condition application have once again been safely ignored.
Question: Do we still focus Reaper first on team engagement?
Why not? I main thief for a reason.

Thinking about Dervish,
I would like some kind of building-up effect in Shroud, which we could then shatter and use to improve one of skills. Like Dervishes did with shattering their enchantments to improve Scythe attacks:

Even if reapers get all the stability in the world, the blind and dodge spam will do them the number. The one hope is that they will be great at cleaving down PvE mobs on Stronghold. I definitely do not see them as a viable skirmisher.

A pretty big problem that you have yet to witness. And a pretty big problem that already exists in necromancers, yet we’re all still here, right?
My point earlier was that no one here has seen the skills yet, it’s too early to be QQing about something you don’t even know about. If the livestream happens and we see a bunch of super slow casts throughout the weapon, then sure. But let’s get the full story, first.
I mean, do any of you guys ever watch Dateline? Sometimes they have a story and someone looks super guilty, and then you get more information and it changes things. It’s just totally illogical to be to be bemoaning greatsword ineffectiveness right now.
Pvp in this game is based around spam. Condi necro was viable due to scepter 1 spam. Power necro due to life blast spam.
Oooooh, I see what’s happening. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
I’ll see myself out.

True, we haven’t seen the skills yet. Does this mean that there is no reason for players of the most neglected class in the game, to feel worried?
Keep in mind that the devs still think that DS is a second healthbar. This hasn’t changed. So yeah, I’d say our harsh criticism is justified, even IF we are jumping the gun a bit.

You can waste time feeling worried if you like. I enjoy life much more when I’m excited at possibilities.

I have a feeling reapers will have lots of stability and resistance. Maybe even Defiance if that ever comes to players.

Then the disappointment will only be bigger.
It’s like going to any movie that features Kristen Stewart: Set your expectations as low as possible, and maybe, just maybe, you’ll be surprised. But at least you will not be disappointed.

To be honest, I really enjoy Necromancer in its current state. I haven’t played in a while, and the itch to start playing again is getting stronger and stronger. I never assume that all of my problems are going to be solved in some patch, or an expansion, or what-have-you.
When I get excited about possibilities, they are simple possibilities. The Greatsword apparently hits hard, but attacks slow. Great. I don’t need to know numbers to start thinking of little combos for damage. Something like Dagger #3 into a GS weap switch to <insert some heavy hitter> into Shroud into what looks like a stun followed by <insert more cool things>. I’m picturing using the GS pull back into something like WoD to continue going to down after someone wastes a dodge to get out, or GS pull into Dagger #3, followed by Focus #4 into Shroud into whatever abilities it has.
Excitement that takes the form of the simple joy of finding strong combos throughout abilities I’m given, because at the end of the day I just enjoy the class. I want them to go the extra mile and make some modifications to the profession mechanic, but if they don’t, I’d rather not focus on the handful of things that make me unhappy. I’ll instead wrap my arms around everything that does make me happy, while still engaging in any discussions around what might be done in the future (when I’m around).

It was mentioned in an article a while back that one of the specialisations will get a grandmaster trait that grants defiance. Could very well be necro, it definitely fits with our theme.

It could be justified around 4:30 eastern standard time this afternoon. If they give us a defiance bar, and some great instant, low cooldown utilities will you still be complaining?
Also important to note that the necro dev wasn’t even on the stream that the 2 health bar thing was mentioned. He did a good job with mesmers from what we’ve seen.
If you’re going to judge it, at least judge the whole thing, not a blog post and promotional video.

I would definitely change my opinion if that is the case. Chance of that happening? Pretty slim.

I’ll judge based on their history with the necromancer.

I get it, but if you are so down on the class I wonder why you’re still here in this forum, and not over at thieves or guardians where anet has been historically good.
Being honest, if reaper is a total flop I may not keep playing GW2, but this is obviously a chance for change, which surely you recognize as I do. Why you’d be so down on it immediately is beyond me.
Well, I have posted in the guardian forum. But that was more to discuss the topic of game balance, and I wasn’t exactly positive there either.
As to the question why I still hang around on the forum? I want this game to be good. I see the potential. I have stuck with this franchise since the beginning, hosting large scale community events, even to this very day. And I have always played necromancer, and necromancer only. I’ve also always been a strong defender of Anet’s design choices.
But it pains me to see the way they are neglecting our class. I want HoT to make the necromancer better, which is why I’m keeping a close eye on any new information that Anet puts out. But it is highly likely that unless they fix our class, I won’t even bother to buy HoT.

Exactly my thoughts, but today is a big chance for anet to turn things around, along with all the work The Gates Assassin did for us. Let’s see what the give us before bashing them again, is all I’m saying.

Not to butt into the conversation, but what is the point of discussing something that has been historically good?
Discussing mistakes and pointing out flaws is not a bad thing at all… I find it a bit insulting to insinuate that people better need to leave this subforum alone if they are discontent with it… It is a discussion forum for a reason, not a “praise the dark lawd” one
Could the tone be different sometimes? Maybe, but frankly after three years of extremely slow and passive balancing, it is not weird that people have adopted this tone

It has only been a few weeks and this has been in process for a long time. I suspect not much from their old train of thought has changed yet. Perhaps it will be something we will need to hold out for until closer to HOT. I doubt they went through ALL of that info and actually proactively began changing things just yet. They don’t seem to make openly discussed decisions that fast.

The idea is we’re all wishing things were better, but we’re still here for a reason, so we shouldn’t be bashing anet for launching changes when we actually want changes. What sense does it make to have a 12 page thread with suggestions to improve the class and then whine the moment they mention changes, even before we see them all?
I think every regular poster here believes that we are frustratingly close to being good. Let’s see if we’re good.after this livestream. So far, so good, in my opinion, but there’s a lot of info we don’t know.

I hate to say it, but the process of Anet comming to the conclusion of these traits, the setup etc. etc. has taken a lot of time before…
Listening to ongoing feedback, implement it, take feedback from it while maintaining the deadline is a cruel dangerous task… The fact that they do not relay information based on the feedback is because of the work that needs to be done (I figure), so try and hold your breath a bit longer… I have no doubt that a lot of useful information has landed on the desks of the balance team, but looking at their past, I would not hope that all doors will open up – rather, I expect a careful and slow approach to implement the feedback, with a nod telling that the feedback is heard…

I do not disagree with you, but that said, there is a certain expectation that crept into the professions when you look at the history of balance and changes… Some people, rightfully, fear the worst… Whether you like to read it or not, it is not unreasonable to think that not a lot of changes for the greater good will be made
I am personally really indifferent… The moment specializations came into the universe, the first thing(s) I figured is that it will not change the core of most professions, but rather give them some new (and improved) tools to expand on said profession… In the Necromancers’ case, this would mean that a lot of core issues remain unsolved… Emphasis on “would” of course
I need to see it out myself… but my expectations are quite low for two out of eight professions, because of how they were handled in the past (and due to the Engineer profession getting a complete trait-rework)

They addressed a number of the mesmers core issues with the chronomancer. So its not unreasonable to expect them to do the same for the necro. Unfortunately it looks like they are going in a different direction with Reaper.

I got to admit that this is a good point…
The way I also figured it was; If they made the Necromancer Specialization a very good choice for PvP and PvE, Anet can, while the playerbase plays the Reaper, work on the core profession to get it in line again… It would be a really big plus if they did – but sadly, it needs to be seen…
Only a few more hours left anyway

Been thinking about playing style for Reaper
If Necromancer gets damaging shouts, maybe Taunt, had the DS invulnerability skill, AoE power damage and soft CC…
Necromancer will be the tank profession whose job is to collect aggro and hold the position for the rest of the team.
It’s like another game’s Guardian.
Would much prefer they give the Reaper Shroud to F2, and still allow old Death Shroud as F1 when using this elite spec. I can see some builds that would like to take Reaper, but still have the ranged options from original DS. If we want build diversity, don’t see why they should lock into melee Reaper Shroud.

No taunt. According to this interview, they thought of adding taunt, but didn’t think it fit the theme. That makes me sad…
Reading the interview Muchacho linked in another thread, Taunt is not likely.
Still, the idea of support by holding aggro may still be possible. Unfortunately, the PUGs I play with are not well trained for this type of cooperative play. GW2 does not have “roles” for players to train in. Tanking 1vX, the Necro is counting on heals, buffs, and debuffs from allies. gw2 does not encourage this.
I could be alone with this opinion but i am kinda glad we dont get taunt. Yes it would have been nice but i think necros need other things then taunt…
