Mesmers with wells
Shouts dont really make sense on a necro. Id expect something completely new for us. But other options could be spirits or auras.
This could lend weight to the suggestion in the other thread that Necromancers will become Banshees and all their new skills will be shouts. Traps would be quite silly for Necros as they’re too similar to wells and marks IMO.
I’m more interested in knowing what they take away/change with the Mesmer’s clones and shatters. It may give us some insight into how they plan to change Death Shroud. As of right now, it sounds like the changes are just additions to their current mechanic.
They said nothing is being taken away. We always assumed that was the case but it seems we were wrong.

I was thinking more of a “Banshee” type thing, a spirit that screams or wails near somebody that is about to die. I think that would fit Necro very well.
Shouts are pretty universally weak so i hope not for our sake.
We will get more Signets.

Shouts make sense to me since most classes with great sword have shouts. Plus we need more instant cast support and utility skills.
Look at shoutbow – they don’t necessarily need to be weak.
I’m looking at Mesmer wells mainly as a way for them to be added in the WvW zerg other than a veilbot. For PvP and PvE it’s just adds to what they already bring.
Since Mesmers are getting Alacrity, which is the opposite of chill, I feel that this is a chance for Anet to bring back one of the top Necro builds from GW1, the BiP Necro.
A BiP Necro was a support build that gave energy regeneration boosts to the party. This meant that the party could use skills faster, which Alacrity will do for Mesmers.
I can see a trait that says Necro wells provide Alacrity to allies or
whenever you use a spectral skill you give Alacrity to allies in an area…..
I can see the LFG BiP Necro dungeon requests
Shouts are pretty universally weak so i hope not for our sake.
Mesmer’s wells seem pretty different from ours, making attacks unblockable, destroying projectiles, things that fit mesmer’s style a lot more. I’m sure a necro’s shouts would act very different from other classes.
Pretty sure the article mentions that alacrity is Mesmer only.
Not not that, but their wells are better than ours. Their wells get an “active” effect and an explode effect.
I’m jealous that they get an elite well too.
The good news is that a well related rune set seems more likely to arrive now.
We really need to hope it is shouts, its the real thing that could add USE to our class.
I just want to be viable, have access to usefulness in every setting.
I don’t begrudge them the wells, However traps would be a step in the wrong direction for us.
Actually with greatsword and the fact that GW1 alot of people played Necro Warrior I could see this being a thing. Banshee I don’t know I was thinking more of an Undead Knight, a Skeletal Knight.
But then this is just my dream
Mesmers are thinking Chronomancer brings about GW1 style builds like fast casting and lockdown.
No reason to think that GW1 Necro builds aren’t coming back also. (other than the fact that minion builds don’t dominate GW2 like GW1 and lifesteal is ummm terribad)
Now I got to go back to GW1 to look at all the different Necro builds to see which ones I’d like to see in GW2.

I think the specializations will be kind of like secondary classes in GW1.
And Mesmer just got the necromancer secondary.
I see why people here are hoping for a warrior secondary, like shouts. Life force is substantially the same thing as adrenaline. It just makes sense.

Yeah when I heard greatsword I definitely jumped on the whole “death knight” hype train. I can’t really see that being a thing though since we’re still a light armor class xD
I could definitely see Banshee though, we even have a trait called “Banshee’s wail”
Pretty sure the article mentions that alacrity is Mesmer only.
It said that the Mesmer was the only Specialization that gets Alacrity.
Here’s hoping Alacrity becomes a base Necro ability.

I agree with you but I will point out that they said Necros want to be hit and they said that about a light armor class. They have also made the range on alot of skills 600 which makes us midline. So I will hope for Death Knight, because I dont know if Banshee will really do the trick.

My problem with this argument is the Necromancer should be valuable to the group without needing to spec into this ‘elite’ specialization. This was my concern months ago when they first started announcing all this stuff.
The poor performing classes will get nothing but stuff to fill in the gaps whereas the other classes will get new fun and exciting things to really expand on the way the class is played.
While too early to tell, I’d be very annoyed if all we had to look forward to was 4 instant cast shouts and a sword of questionable worth.

I agree with you there. We will be worthless without the new specialization. I mean seriously lol I cant imagine going against a Chronomancer without some shiny completely new skills. They will eat the floor with us.
Specializations aren’t intended to be more powerful than the core classes. They really can’t be, otherwise Specializations will represent pay to win philosophies.
For weak classes like necro, and Mesmer, that means Specializations may be very strong to bring us up to other classes. Eles, Warriors, and engis may got some cool new effects like revs any did, but that doesn’t mean they are super strong Specializations.

I think the REAL value of the new mesmer spec is the addition of their new shatter, Continuum Shift. Without it, all they got was 1 offhand weapon and some wells. This class mechanic is pretty game-changing, I would hope Necro gets something comparable.
New shatters and new ways to use life force were both specifically mentioned in the news from a couple days ago.

Please don’t joke about this, it’s not funny. I don’t want a second set of useless critters in my skill list.

The problem with Necromancer builds is that we were shining with Hexes, at least from what I remember out of builds that were rather Necro-heavy.
Many skills were about sacrafices for big effects. Hexes were more complicated than GW2 condition system and had many variables.
It also looks like the new Specializations will be plain expansions and no choice, for now at least.
There will be no vanilla Necromancers or Mesmers etc. I believe because so far the mechanics are only expanding, there are no trade offs.

I’m sorry I couldn’t let this one pass. The mesmer is NOT a weak class, they are wanted in dungeon runs, roaming, PvP and even in zergs as veil bots/pick team. The necro however is shunned for 90% of all content in the game save well bomber in WvW. In order for us to be wanted in all the game our specialization will have to outshine all the others. But that leads to the problem that without the specialization (even if stellar) we need to make our basic abilities more wanted everywhere and we are not even half as wanted as a mes.
In pvp they have one spec, the same they’ve always had, and it is countered by thieves. Weak in pvp. Veilbot in wvw? Lol, ask mesmers how they feel about that. Weak there, too. Dungeon runs they are wanted for portal, but for the most part they aren’t a dominating class in pve either. For as good as they can be, necromancers do still have some uses in wvw zergs that we shine in, too.
Mesmers are weak, and you need to pay more attention because this doesn’t seem like an educated post. So are necromancers.
What about Stances? Or Aureas? I hope that because it can fit more a undead knight class.
What about a Stance or Aura that spam weakness and/or chill all around you?
I don’t like the idea of shouts because they seems to be.. weak.
The shoutbow is good not because of shouts, it’s good because of a Rune that make them clean a condition and a Trait that make them Healing Shouts.
Warrior shouts give a little amount of might and fury, vulnerability, clean a condition and give fear. Ranger shouts make the pet more aggressive or defensive, make it take all your damage and send it to revive a random player.
That don’t seems very good to me. Not if you look at all the other skills that you can obtain.
Some kind of Stance/Aura that don’t acto on you but act on your enemy can be very good.
Inflict Slow and Weakness to all the enemy in XX range every sec. Inflict damage and steal life to all enemy in XX range every sec. Inlict Chill and Fear to all the enemies in XX range every sec (because they will still make you inflict fear, i know…).
Something like that. It can be good for a Melee class and it fit the “image” of the Necromancer, that will never obtain direct defensive skills but that can obtain indirect defensive skills.
I really hope that we will not obtain a Supporter Specializzation. That will make almost all the necromancers Ragequit the pg and reroll into another class.
Mesmers are weak, and you need to pay more attention because this doesn’t seem like an educated post. So are necromancers.
No need for the snide remark. I have a power mes I use in PvE a roamer mes I use in WvW, yes sometimes as a veilbot, but I do pick when needed. PvP I admit isn’t my strong suit, but I have guild members that do just fine at it.
I am sorry if that is not a PHD in mesmer sciences, but I’m not talking out of my kitten either.
Mesmers are weak in pve, weak in wvw besides being a veil bot or a perma stealth roamer….. and are hard countered by the most common zerk spec that every team takes for every comp.
So yeah you might not be talking out of your kitten …. but your fingers and kitten are in agreement.

A simple thing from the mesmer’s forum:
“Continuum Shift + Signet of Illusion = no cooldown skills if Continuum Shift is shatter skill.”
If it work, we will be able to find a large amount of self-loop-mesmers into the game.
At last they will be able to active it twyce before it go really in cooldown.
I think we will get shouts every GS wielder has shouts except mesmer.
I hope GWEN comes back wells are the offensive version of glamours even tough it was possible to use them offensively already…not very innovative…
The Dhuumfire thread
Maybe we should get illusions … ghosts of the kitten ed? Shatter for lifeforce.
alts: Fangyre (Necro), Hardrawk (Ele);
Jade Quarry
I was actually hoping we would get some sort of spectral themed version of the Mesmer F5 skill.
I’m thinking shouts or mantras. Also since we are getting great sword and Maj uses it in melee (biggest hint we have) our life force will be usd like adrenaline or still DS but new 1-5 skills that fit better with melee.
It was 2 vs 20 but its ok we got’em both!
I bet we get ranger shouts to command our minions to attack.
I think I should remove this quote given the recent developement.
Interestingly, there were necromancer skills back in GW1 called Orders, that were supportive in nature. They could be easily recreated as shouts. Might finally give us some team-friendly builds.
Shouts dont really make sense on a necro. Id expect something completely new for us. But other options could be spirits or auras.
Orders say hi. Orders are functionally the same as shouts (as far as transitioning to GW2), and allow actual unique team support. Also, the current list of professions that could get shouts (and we know someone will) is: Elementalist, Thief (shouting stealth?), Engineer, and Necromancer. Revenant can’t get it because the specialization is getting 6 shouts (Rev gets 5 skills per specialization atm), Warrior/Guardian/Ranger already have them.
Well if they are like orders then im fine with them. I dont have much faith right now though. :P
that minion builds don’t dominate GW2 like GW1 and lifesteal is ummm terribad
Well that is because you do not use one or the other. Life-steal minions Woo!

Yes.
With GS the most expected would be shouts, kitten the devs if we get physical skills, I am still not looking forward to it.

Also makes a fair bit of sense that we’d get shouts since Ranger “taught” us how to use our greatsword, would make sense if they taught us shouts too.
if mesmer can take our wells can we have thief shadowsteps my dark path is too rocky and flesh wurm is teleporting me wrong way when i try chase someone.
Conjured Weapons could be a possibility that could give Necro group support in an interesting way and still fit the theme. Although I’m not sure I’m the biggest fan of that idea.
Shouts could be good if they were balanced well.
I’ll take anything that will give Necro good support options tbh.

Conjured weapons from eles are getting merged AFAIK. I definitely don’t think it’ll be conjured weapons. As Bhawb pointed out, we have a 1 in 4 chance of getting shouts. I know I’d welcome some instant cast group utility. I could see us getting an AOE resistance or an AOE slow. AOE taunt.
I really want taunt, it’d be so good with a well.

I pretty much agree with this 100% (Though I hope Revenants get more that 3 utility skills per Legend, I’m pretty sure their elite spec with bring a new Legend, not a new skill type) We know someone is getting shouts from the blog articles, and when given the short list of professions that don’t have Shouts, Necromancers are the ones that make the most sense (well, personally Mesmers do, but seeing as they get wells…)
Also +1 on the actual skill names being Orders, especially if that means getting Order of Pain back, though in this case, it’s “Order” in the context of us giving orders, rather than belonging to an Order of X, like it kinda was in GW1.
(edited by Foefaller.1082)
Orders could also be given to us as aoe auras, makes more sense imo, but who knows.
Id put my money on engie getting traps and us getting shouts
- reve cant get shouts cz its 6x skills
- necro morale is dead, they probably wanna make up for it by announcing some juice for us
- we lack insta casts and support (though they might be more debuff oriented)
- shouts + GS seems good for melee
- it doesnt fit on other classes
Watch us get Spirits -_-
I expect us to get spirits, judging by the flavour Marjory’s greatsword holds. Perhaps they will be spirits of people like the ones rits had in gw1.
