Necro GS and specialization
From what i understood there will be more than one specialization for each class. Otherwise if the specialization was just simply better than the original class everyone would choose it and there would be nothing “special” about it.
There will be multiple specializations, which will essentially be sub-classes that focus your build a bit more. Just as a speculation, they could have a specialization corresponding to each of our trait trees: Curses would change your deathshroud/heal/elite/weapon choices to be condi focuse, Spite would do the same for power, Death Magic for minions/tankiness, Blood Magic for more siphoning.
We know that multiple specializations will exist. This is really just a good thing for Necro, since it means there is a good chance that the weakness of certain build types can be covered up by their specialization, or we can further specialize into something, making builds more unique. My Death Magic specialized MM build could be totally different than a Blood Magic specialized one, despite using a similar build, for example.
Sadly, from the explanation of PAX there will be only one for each profession :/
We know that multiple specializations will exist.
Where do you get this information from? From the reveal at pax it sounds like there will only be one http://www.twitch.tv/guildwars2/c/5954011 Starting at 36 minutes.
Did i understand the explanation wrong? (as its not my native language)

Collin says “THE necromarcer specialization” sounds to me that there is just one. (?) any dev ? please ?
They specifically said that staff will only be available to rangers who specialize into druid. But if there is only one specialization, that means nothing, every ranger will specialize into druid and everyone will have staff. It implies that there will be multiple, otherwise what they said makes little sense.

Yeah, it makes much sense since they are talking about customization, theres no customization if therese just one choice, it would be an addition instead, yet on the other hand, the exact wording was “The greatsword is part of the necromancer specilization”.. not “of one of the necromancer specilizations”.. this worries me.
Could be badly worded. Could be he was saying “greatsword is part of the necromancer specialization (leave out the name)” meaning that greatsword will be available through specialization, not base to the class. Its a bit nitpicky on semantics, but I think the big point is that specializations very heavily imply that there are other things you could have specialized in, but picked one of multiple options.

That’d make sense considering it’s follow the same prerequirments as staff for ranger. Best not to get too worked up over it yet, but specialization wouldn’t be specialization without choice. I’m willing to bet specializations are being made so certain abailities and weapon types aren’t as useless for other build types and so on. Especially with class specific abilities. (Ie life blast for condies) But alas, wait and see.

omg found it, the main site of gw2 was updated and it says:
Evolve your gameplay. With profession specializations, you’ll unlock access to A weapon previously unavailable to your profession as well as new traits, skills and unique mechanics – all of which will trnasform your profession into somehting new.
https://heartofthorns.guildwars2.com/en/#section-specializations
so if a specialization implies to unlock a weapon then it means that there is just 1 per profession.
???
There will most likely be something for both Condi and Power as they described the Revenant for ex. But imho Power Necro needs ALOT more love then Condi.

I think people need to stop panicking and overanalyzing phrasing until official details release. It’s possible that:
1. There’s only one “specialization” per class. But that’s not very special.
2. There are multiple “specializations” per class, but they are all based around a single weapon.
3. There are multiple “specializations” per class, and each has a unique weapon associated with it.
This is the “hype” phase of marketing, where it’s designed to let your imagination get excited about the possibilities. Yes, some people are going to use the lack of refined detail to just worry and complain, but many people are going to be simply excited. Don’t let your paranoia suck you into a vortex of “Oh no, Necros are getting screwed again”, because that’s just silly at this point.
I’m pretty pumped. Easily favorite class can unlock my easily favorite weapon type? I think it’s time for me to get back into the rhythm of the game.
“He’s like a man with a fork in a world of soup.”
My understanding of it is multiple specialisations and each one gives access to a different weapon. Id assume we would have at least 2 specialisations per class on HoT release so we actually have choice (otherwise its not a specialisation its an upgrade). But we may get additional specialisations in later patches.
I do guess GS for Necs will work more likely Mesmer as range specially AA, doubt it will be Melee but yea looking into GS Skins now

Well we have two examples of Necromancer greatsword users already. Are they melee or ranged?
Ranged GS is unlikely based on this. I think its safe to assume the GS auto attack will be pretty much what is shown in this video.

aka you dont just get it you have to go thru your quests and kittens to specialize into druid aka all rangers have the potential to upgrade to druid but when you do become a druid you get your weapon utilities and what nots oh but your still a ranger dont forget it ya lil kitten

I understood it like you can either stay vanilla with maybe couple new utilities OR you can go into that one spec, lose some stuff and get other stuff with modified mechanic.
Although just one spec would be really, really lame. At least 2 and we talk.

MAYBE
the current necro is the other specialization. I really doubt that it was just bad wording and they really meant – 1 other specialization.
So when you start off with necro, and level in PvE, you get a very basic form with the basic weapons and than later on you choose between the necro we have now and the ‘GS wielding super cool looking necro’.
and maybe mesmer/chronomancer
and also ele/golemancer
and also engi/forger (hammer)
maybe also ranger/druid
Idk, but I thought GW2 should have explained just a bit more -.-
Yeah that is a possibility. Even if thats the case the option to add other specialisations later on is still there.
We will just have to wait and see.
Baseing it on a NPC meens nothing tbh

The new animations with necro green effect suggest otherwise. :P

Perma Chill on autoattack, OP !

Death Knight(Curse) GS power control cc, Reanimator (Death Magic) axe/WH minion based mechanic with superior summon they hired a new AI guy a while ago, Demon (Spite) dagger/torch puts terromancer and dhumfire to shame, Vampire (Blood Magic) sworsword/dagger no DS so healing works there, Soulist (Soul Reaping) staff gather souls to empower .
The Dhuumfire thread
They wouldn’t make current necro a specialization, because you cannot use one specialization’s abilities if you aren’t that specialization. Meaning you’d be locked from the class. They very specifically said that only Druids could use the staff, not all rangers.
The only way that I see specialization being just one is if it forced you into using new stuff somehow, meaning there would be a reason to not specialize. Otherwise its just an upgrade, and a lot of the stuff that they have said is meaningless.
Whoever call out the greatsword possibility with the teaser with majory in it good job!
Now I imagine that there will be 3 different types of specialization that you will get to choose from
dps
support
crowd control
their 3 main roles your suppose to see in gw2
that specialization i imagine affect what four new utility skills are, an elite, alternate weapon and heal skill, with maybe new class mechaninc
quick guess at what the specializations are
lich necro : new mechanic controlling your minions, mace (support)
ritualist necro : current death shroud, greatsword (dps)
cataclysm necro : new mechanic usuable abilities from life force, bow (crowd ccontrol)
Hopefully melee and defensive/control. Because necros have enough ranged and offensive choices already.

crowd control
I think it kind of depends on how they want the specializations to work. If they want to correspond to the playstyles, then there would probably be 4-5 max (though not all in this expansion), or they could do the three you mention, or just offensive/defensive, or explore new stuff (like druids are kind of a new thing for rangers). So there is a lot they can do with it, its hard to really tell what.
You cant call it “Specialization” If there is only 1 option for every class, they dont need to confirm this its 100% sure there is at least 2 options for every class.
I am in complete awe by the expansion. The hype is real.
Times like these you wish you could take back a lot of stuff you’ve said about the dev’s, particularly about not listening to its community.
I’m thinking there will be at least 3 specializations to classes since the choice of three is pretty common in their character story set-up/customization (like Tad said)
I think there will be two dps options: conditions or power. The third will maybe be a combination of support/control. I think all will allow variant builds.
The brilliant thing about this is that I know that the devs have been wanting to make their esports easier to translate over to the viewing community so it provides people to still choose what they want but also work under the clarity of a theme name. Very smart.

Agreed, I think you’ll either see what Tadsoul posted, or something that compliments current specs. Something like, Condition, Power, Minion, or even only Condition or Power.
I really suspect that you’ll only see 2-3 specializations; any more and they will be adding more weapons and skills than currently exist in game. Because of that I think you’ll see something that just becomes another straightforward decision of your meta spec, as in, power necros take the Greatsword specialization, and condi necros take this other specialization, because it’s just the one that makes the most sense. A lot of current weapons are like that now – daggers synergize with wells, axe synergizes with minions… certain decisions just make more sense. I think the specializations will be the same way.
If it worked any other way there is a lot more that will need to be balanced. But that doesn’t matter much to me. New weapons, new skills, new elites, new heals, all awesome news.

I think calling the default necro, that we have right now, a ‘specialisation’ and then adding another one that gives you new skills but also locks you out of some of the current ones seems to be the most likely thing to happen.
it also requires the least amount of effort.
Let’s hope this GS is going to be a melee condition weapon. those are kinda rare right now. Still wouldve preferred a hammer tho, fits necro better and melee-necro with GS might be too similar to the Revenant, in my opinion.
Gunnar’s Hold
I don’t know what will be our specialization and new mechanic but just keep in mind that we don’t have blocks, leap, invu, because of death shroud, take it off and you better pray that specialization got some mobility and/or blocks.
Just imagine the ranger GS into our hands, you got leap AND block.
