Necro & Mesmer @ 80..soo what to choose
[LUSA]
Mesmer is best choice for dungeons. Necro and mesmer both strong in pvp. Necro really good in wvw though.
For badges and general zergging you want to go with Necro in WvW. If you want to general purpose roam you would enjoy several mesmer builds; shatter or phants. Mesmer also do fine in a full glamour build, but its sort of unenjoyable in smaller fights.
For support/general purpose dungeons you are going to get more mileage and less hate speech by taking a mesmer. Necro isn’t bad in that area, it just isn’t nearly as good in general.
Based on your request, you could do either, but a mesmer with a zerker style set for dungeons and a conditions set for zergging in wvw would be good. Or a necro with rabid/rampagers/zerker for whatever you plan to do.
I play both as well.
For dungeons, the Necro will be a better “healer” support, while the Mesmer will bring more offensive and utilitarian support.
For tPvP, I can’t say much as I only do it sparingly.
WvW both are great. The Necro will shine in AE situations, so surf those zergs and you’ll get carpal tunnel from all the bags. The Mesmer is probably best roaming or small scale fights. That’s not to say the Necro can’t do very well in small scale and the Mesmer in zergs, I just personally think they excel the other way around.
Two sides of the same coin, both work great in each, just falls down to build.
For dungeons id go with mesmer if you want to carry/make the dungeon easier, necro if healz and tanking stuff with green-black blobs of tentacle mass
In wvwvw, both necro and mesmer fall flat in roaming (no combat mobility on necro and no speed boost on mesmer without really crippling builds and spamming one of your best skills for it), on zergs however well staff necros can pretty much drop, run away a bit, go get a cup of tea and probably get more bags than a person on a arrow cart, mesmers the same just that they need to chain their glamours and be higher level for traits (40 for necro ranged wells, 60+ for working mesmer glamour zerg killer).
Mesmer.
They are always a must have in every team.
They are also extremely good soloers, while Necros completely suck at that.
Mesmer, they bring a lot more suport/dmg to a group.
In wvw you gona have a lot more fun playing a mesmer, portal bombs, confusion bomb, etc, all a necro can do is put some marks, miss epidemic cause dodge roll, block or range.
Necros have almost no ways to escape a zerg, if u get stuned, chilled u gona die.
The only good thing necros have is wells, but due to 5cap aoe in a 40 man zerg puting a well to hit 5 ppl means close to nothing.

People keep saying mesmers bring a lot more support/damage to a group. Has anyone seen this insane damage ?…
I’m slowly shifting towards mesmer class tutorials because last week i have done rank 50 fractals with 3 loudmouths mesmers, who wanted to kick me out of my own party for being a necromancer. They kept telling everyone what to do… we kept wiping on almost every trash mobs, with me being the last to die using the hybrid build. By the second fractals i realized they were doing close to no damage. All they were doing were running around until getting squished by a mob… Worst high level fractal run i have ever seen…
Also i have yet to see a hybrid mesmer, they are like a myth… I have made one, seems pretty solid so far, have to test it more though. After i thought i would check the mesmer forums and see what is there… I’ve always wondered why is every single mesmer i see running with a greatsword and spamming 1… Turns out there are dozens of guides, nicely made on the forums that no one bothers to use or check out…
Don’t get me started on the mesmers… they have guides… they don’t use them. Yet most mesmer pugs i have met all boast about how great they are and how necromancer suck… meanwhile i epidemic and they auto-attack with greatsword.
They will never know just how much more damage i do in comparison to them.
ps: I want to meet the hybrid mesmer… confusion + vulnerability alongside bleed + vulnerability from hybrid necromancer all spread around by epidemic… in a beautiful spectacle of carnage… One can only hope.

Necromancers suck at soloing ? Soloing what ?… I have face tanked champions, someone soloed Lupicus, i have soloed world bosses…

Necromancers are actually incredibly good at soloing in PvE.

Nemesis already commented on the solo thing… not sure what that’s supposed to mean either.

Really? Wells are the only good thing we have??
Is this a troll post? Because you must be the first person to say that necros are weak in group fights.
I guess the argument about the 5 target aoe cap also makes sense since it doesn’t apply to mesmers…

I would absolutely love to see a Mesmer guide made by you.

So since you are looking at this through the eyes of PVE I will comment on the above with that in mind.
Unlike guardians, taking more than one mesmer is often a bad idea for a group (much like a necro). There are very few situations in fractals where more reflect is needed than 1 mesmer and 1 guardian can provide, and in those cases you can get by with a few extra dodges. Most mesmers in fractal are specing for valk gear, something else with toughness/power, so tend to not do tons of damage, and tend to trait for reflect.
In those builds they do pretty bad damage, but can help with reflects, which are key on several of the bosses. In general I do not find the PVE damge of the mesmer high at all, the necro damage is quite higher in almost every case (especially over time). But it makes sense when you think about it:
1. Their damage is either reliant on shatters, or clones. Clones like minions die constantly, so often get 0-1 rounds off before they get scrapped in fractals. Most shatter mesmers just get lazy and sit back and relax, as opposed to button spamming for a 3-5 min PVE fight.
2. Their best damage comes from sword in a power build, and it is very hard to melee some fractal bosses (none safely), so any power mesmers is going to sit back and use GS, which is not great damage when the I-zerker is dying constantly.
3. Their condition builds are just sub par to really most other class condition builds. They can’t keep confusion on a mob long enough to matter in PVE (except for some rare multi-hit mobs like lupi), and their bleeds/burns are not any better than what an ele could do in a condition/support build.
But all that aside, you don’t need damage in a fractals. Possibly one of the more interesting things about them, is you are just better off with a support guardian, a support/reflect mesmer, 3 other classes that deal good damage in whatever way they do.
But take 3 mesmers? That was your problem, and possibly their own personal skill level. Yes they will do lower damage, but the bigger problem is all that extra reflect is going to waste, and you gave up a potential group buffing slot (second guardian, warrior, ele).
Most people don’t realize when they join a group with double mesmer that is what they are looking at, but generally it isn’t a big deal, because so few fights in fractals are DPS dependent. Also TW can speed up some of those fights to where it doesn’t matter as much. If you could rewind to that group, and swap in a DPS warrior, I bet you would have seen much better results.
Hybrid mesmer is a fine build with rampagers gear, but it doesn’t really work out as well as you might hope, unless you use GS as a primary (for bleeding) and forgo using burn. The staff is just not a very well scaled power weapon, and it is suppose to be the mainstay of the condition build. You get more mileage from a full condition build if you want to use staff.
I find hybrid necro damage way higher in my experiences on both.
Hi and good morning guys.
First of all thanks for the info and sorry for not respond earlier but college exams kept me from being here…
I will try out the Necro well build and Mesmer phantasm build for party functions. So what do you think its better or more reliable ? I’m tempted to go Necro all the way, start evolving my 80 to get ascend items and pvp’ing in the tournaments with him.
I was thinking about a build like this:
10; II
10; II
10; V
20; IV
20; VI; X
With this build i have in mind the use for wells for the party and boss/mobs blinds and vun. while keeping my DS for dmg and more vun, for weapons i was thinking axe/focus and staff. What do you think?
