Necromancer's Appeal
I’ll try to remain positive. The most attractive is manipulation of boons and conditions…still trying to remain positive, this is my first dark class that is not wielding a melee scythe, not female gender-locked,not over sexualized because I usually play real action mmos. I think it’s more of graphics and the death theme, it’s kind of hard to describe but to me it’s graphics while not that great I don’t know I want to feel like kitten Hades. My attempt to remain positive prevents from expressing the bad “kitten ”(censored) potential of necro cough cough dark tank without the shield.
Hades man.. Hades.

Because I love the idea of “I may not be great, but I can make you suck worse.” I love the idea of toying with my opponents, drawing out their death to be as slow as possible, but still coming.
Doesn’t work quite as well as I would like, here, but nobody really debuffs better than a Necro.
Because i like being constantly disappointed.
In all the seriousness. The only reason i havent completely given up and abandoned the class is because i like the aesthetic. The dark green and black smoke effects and the dark magic theme is appealing. Shame the class sucks.
I love the classes ability to just kinda shrug off incoming attacks. While this could (and should) be much better than it is right now, it really does feel great to just send/eat all your conditions and corrupt your enemies away, turning the course of a battle. Plus I just like the idea of building a resource that you can use to transform into a more powerful form.
I started at release with a ranger, and dumped it for a necro main by December of that year. I haven’t enjoyed playing another class as much as I do my necro, and still play her to this day.
Why do I like necro and continue to play the class? I love that they’re a light armor wearing, tanky class with lots of “get out of death” cards at their disposal. I also like them because I don’t have to be as mobile as other classes are.
I do suffer from repetitive motion injury to my mouse hand, and I’ve tailored my necro’s build and equipment to be forgiving if I can’t jump out of stuff fast enough, etc.
I tried playing a Necromancer in Guild Wars 1, but for whatever reason I just couldn’t get the hang of it, and I always went back to my Domination Mesmer. (I couldn’t get the hang of the Monk profession either)
When I got here back in March, I wanted something different so I went with an Asuran Necromancer. I’ll probably create another character in a different profession later, but so far I’m loving my tiny goth creature of death, but I can’t really put my finger on why I like it so much.
I finally got her to level 80 yesterday.

Biggest appeal for me is the variety of builds available. For a long time, Necromancer had nothing it was particularly good at so whatever I ran, it was all the same. Most other professions now have their own viable alternatives resulting from the balance patches.
Necromancer is still good at tagging trash mobs.
Necro was my first character and I love the ability to melt enemies with conditions. Along with minions (that got nerfed) you can face tank a champ and let the minions take the damage. As an added bonus, death shroud (nerfed since launch) is great for tagging multiple mobs. Sorry, can’t think of anything else since everything else is either nerfed or not feasible to even recommend using.
The
I always liked being able to take away the greatest strengths of an opponent. Taking away a bursters ability to crit. A spammers ability to cycle skills. A runners ability to reach you.
I feel like this game got very close to the idea of a true debilitation class. Where a skilled necromancer in nearly any build can roll poison, cripple, chill, and weakness when it needs to. I always liked that because it always felt infinitely more engaging to actively take away a persons key aspects rather than relying on some passive (block x attacks or take x less damage for x seconds) skills or bonuses to survive.
My only regret with the necromancer so far is that ANET took away several of the key things that this playstyle needs to survive for balance purposes. I understand WHY they did it. But id hoped theyd find a better way.
I love the idea of getting focused in every fight, b/c I’m an easy target and I’m a bit of a fan of pingpong. My death means my enemies might have used ~20ish? of their cooldowns in a team fight. My job here is done.
I saw a Bone Fiend when I was watching my cousin play GW1 when I was like 10-11, and I instantly wanted to play Necromancer. So eventually I got the game, and I spent probably hundreds of hours in AB/FA as an MM, and it was the greatest thing ever. From that, I really fell in love with the whole design of walking the line between life and death, and the whole idea of inflicting curses yet enchanting allies, of healing while dealing damage, etc. Its all a cool cyclic deal that I enjoyed. Plus the aesthetic is cool.
In GW2 I also love the playstyle of being very naturally beefy. Minions are super cool (if buggy), and sadly the broken-ness of the class actually really attracts me because it is almost more fun to learn and understand all the tiny interactions of the profession than it is to actually play the game.
I always pick necro or anything close to it. Spell casting death dealer and if you gives me minions even better. Guild wars definitely nailed down the necro class. More so in guildwars1 but thats a different game. Guildwars2 still does a great job at creating a fun powerful squishy death guy. The reason i stay and have appeal to necro is in all honesty i feel like its one of the least play classes. I have this weird goal in any game to be the most different. Im sure you guys know what i mean. Need the cool armor that takes years to grind the hard titles that make new guys target you. I just feel like necro breaks the mold from the general players. The last thing would be downstatepowermancer op.
Absolutely face-melting amounts of damage with little to no effort when unobstructed. This is what got me into Necro in the first place, since I leveled it 1-80 in sPvP only. When I first started I could stand still, no movement, no dodging while spamming staff marks and win 1v3 fights. Obviously it doesn’t work against even semi-competent players, but the raid boss feeling was amazing.
I love being able to conjure up armies of minions, or tanking enemies with life stealing. I love corrupting boons and using spiteful spirit to make mobs of enemies destroy themselves.
In GW2 however, no appeal.

Staff spamming marks to win 1v3s? Did you play against people that were legally blind or something?
Anyway,
What appeals to me of the Necromancer has to be that IT IS the underdog class. It’s shunned in PvE, if focused in PvP it will go down as fast as an untouched Lich Form can down its enemies, its only useful mechanic/gameplay is when it’s sitting in the back of a WvW zerg spamming 1, and well it’s overall a class that plays against itself most of the time. Often, I get myself in situations (or am put in situations) where I die and I’d think to myself “If I was on my nikey warrior, block/heal all dmg Guardian, teleport and stealth thief, etc, I’d be alive now rather than dead contributing nothing for my team”.
You have to be a real baller to play Necro and stay optimistic about the class rather than leave it altogether and play something else. While being completely useless in sPvP against a really coordinated premade or just semi-competent players, I like the part(s) where I 1v1 people (and win, or put up a really great fight) in WvW roaming or sPvP point capping. People underestimate Necro too much, and when we’re able to lay down the hammer and utterly obliterate someone, it’s a feeling that can’t be had when playing any other class.
Anyways, now with that out of the way I would like to know: What makes the Necromancer appealing to you?
Obviously you’re not a necro player.
What makes the Necromancer appealing to me is not much, it’s just that i’ve put more than 1000 hours in it so i stick with it, you should just read other Topics, we have great expectations for the necro to be fix with HoT.
I adore necromancer because they are very solo friendly, amazingly fun to play and do well in all game types (being meta =/= doing well)
Literally the only reason necromancers aren’t part of the speedrun meta in pve is lack of a blast finisher or fire field. Everything else about necro excels.
Most self-sufficient class in the game in my opinion
traited 100% crit in death shroud
Hitting like an absolute truck as a power build
the game’s best safety net in terms of saving yourself from death (ie, deathshroud, effectively a second health bar)
Being an utter menace to all who dare oppose you in pvp/wvw, as either power or condi
undead minions made of bones and internal organs
soon to be a greatsword wielding deathknight
Great theme as a whole
There’s only one thing I dislike about necromancer, and that’s the colour of the particle effects (really not a green fan) and that’s easy to overlook considering how fun and engaging I find the class in all aspects of gameplay
