So i have a necro currently and have his almost fully geared and max lvl but i picked Norn.

I’m finding that single choice has put me at a serious disadvantage.

i’m curious as to everyone else’s thoughts on what races should and shouldn’t be a necro and why.

thanks

It would help germinate a discussion if you explained yourself at all.

I’m curious as to what disadvantages you find playing a Norn necromancer. Or any other race for that matter.

Other than the racial skills, I wasn’t aware that race impacted the play of a class at all. (I could be missing something there; I’m certainly no expert.)

yeah so there are no racial disadvantages in this game, so idk what the OP is talking about :/

plus the racial skills just a worse version of other class skills with unique graphics and shouts and what not.

Sorry i can elaborate more.

In PvE and PvP i’m finding the racial abilities of the Norn to be completely dwarfed compared to a couple of the other racials.

Now i’m not totally familair with all the racials. but as i understand it Sylari get a AoE immobilized which is stupid strong compared to what the Norn get.

So i was looking for feed back as to which races compliment the Necro class and why people think that.

hopefully that helps

Bear mode on Norns is awesome. Good source of knockback for a class that has none.

Yeah the Bear form seems to be the only form i have found any use out of. Unfortunately it doesn’t really fit well with my playing style. i’m more of a Run and gun player and the loss of mobility when using any of the abilities is really crippling.

I used the Owl for a while when I was toying with a condition build. Nontrivial amount of bleed damage on a 30 second cooldown, and the same range as BiP. It wasn’t bad. It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t bad.

If you’re going to reroll because of this, take a look at the Asuran ability that gives a few stacks of Confusion. In a Conditions build it hits surprisingly hard. I’ve seen a couple of Youtube vids where someone used it to surprising effect in WvW.

that sort of helps, as in it helps me know that someone has been feeding you dated information.

yes the sylvari racial used to be that, but it got nerfed HARD before launch even, now only rooting one target for a shorter amount of time with no additional damage from the roots. basically no one uses it anymore, theres no point in wasting a utility slot for it.

but like i previously said, all the racial skills are worse versions of other class skills, there are no disadvantages or advantages of being any race over another, period.

i understand that the racials tend to be weaker versions of other abilities. But for a Norn a weaker ability is better then none at all. Example underwater norns lose access to all elites but 1. plague form is all we get underwater.

I’m only really familair with char and norn elites. since all my 80’s currently come from those races.

the char elites are better then the norn elites IMO specially for a necro. of course alot are still not accessible underwater.

Sylvari get Plague Form only, also. And that’s just sad.

Norn is not so bad, superpower-kitty form is a ‘get out’ which as a career we don’t have otherwise, 5sec stealth and a massive charge which will nearly take you out of clip range. I have used that as a blockade runner to get into a keep a couple of times which I wouldn’t have been able to do in plague form. The wolf-form also does condition damage on its attacks with a decent enough bleed, but its not something I really tote out often over plague form.
Aside from that, the cooldown is not really desirable on them as its quite long.

listen to thresher hes on the right track with kitty form

my first necro was asura, once i geared him up I found I was using lich form less and less (power build) as my DS nuke was hitting just as hard.

rerolled a norn and have hardly died since in wvw.

having stealth and massive mobility (make sure you are holding the button down for the full distance of the charge) on a class that doesnt get it otherwise actually makes a run and gun playstyle viable on a necro.

I’ve known since beta that I wanted to make a Sylvari Necromancer. I know it probably doesn’t fit lore wise, but the look just seemed perfect for me.

Out of all the classes I’ve made, I think 3/5 of them are Sylvari. I love them to death and I find their starting zone is my favourite, and possibly easiest to level up in. I’ve never once encountered a situation where I’ve done all the hearts/POI’s/vistas and DE’s and the next area in the zone is too high of a level.

I’ve had that happen to me in the human starter area, the charr, and the asuran area and it’s pretty annoying

how are the charr racials better?

an aoe rocket strike that does mediocre damage and has an incredibly long CD, a “charrzooka” that also does only moderate damage when it actually hits your targets, and the ability to summon two allies that die within seconds in any large scale PvE fight or boss fight, all the while once again only doing moderate damage.

and i dont think any of those are usable underwater either. necros are just kinda kittened underwater in general (i.e. no wells or elite besides plague).

i have a charr warrior and a charr thief, and i dont think on either of them did i even consider using their racial elites. and yes i did test the thief elte “thieves guild” and the charr elite “warband” to see which was better, and not only did the thieves do more damage but they lived longer.

so, again, the norn is not kittened or at any disadvantage in any way what so ever as a necro when compared to the other races.

I’ve never once encountered a situation where I’ve done all the hearts/POI’s/vistas and DE’s and the next area in the zone is too high of a level

im the complete opposite lol

2/5 of my toons are sylvari, necro and guardian, and its the only starting zone ive had lvling issues in. and no in the moving onto the next area and being too low thing (since thats never happened to me, cause if you really do everything its impossible to be too low, someone made a thread on guru a while back doing the math of the xp in each area and in every area youd end up half a lvl higher then the minimum recommended for the next area, and that was if you didnt do the story).

my issue was that the story points were too close together, id have to lvl all around the point and get farther away just so i could get into it at a decent lvl. i never played human but asura, charr, and norn never gave me that issue.

EDIT: but dont get me wrong, i love the sylvari, one of the coolest looking races ive seen ina while lol

Picked norn cause i love hating my necromancer and when the stupid toughness lvl 5 trait dies he goes “dead again dead again”.
