I’m only level 8, but I feel like I’m getting creamed a lot more than I should be.

I see a lot of people posting about how weak this class is.. is that what it is? or should I be using different weapons? Right now I have daggers.

I’m a complete newb to the game, so forgive me if I am asking a dumb question.

I personally enjoy Necro. Not sure what others are whining about.
I really enjoy staff main hand and double daggers on swap. I use wells on all 4 skills and Lich Form as my elite. While grouping I burn all my staff coolowns, swap burn all my wells and dagger cooldowns, death shroud to aoe and finish my weapon cooldowns while trying to take a few hits in melee for my team. Remove death shroud and swap to staff while backing out of melee and repeat.

It’s fairly common for me to have damage aggro in groups, but with all the blinds and and cooldowns it is fairly hard to die.

Necros have weak damage but we aren’t really bad at surviving.
Here are some newbie tips:

Hold down right mouse button and use it to turn.
Turn the camera movement rate/sentivity up in the options.
This applies to all Professions at all ranges, but it’s especially important in melee.
Turning with the keyboard is awkward and inefficient.
Binding your Utility and Healing skills into better keys helps a lot, too.

Use your dodges!
When you use dodge you are invincible for a short time.

Circle strafe enemies while repeatedly stabbing them and they will often miss many of their attacks.

And some tips just for Necro:
Use your Death Shroud!
Life Force builds up pretty fast and the Death Shroud skills deal nice damage.
Being in Death Shroud also completely shields your Health so long as you have enough Life Force to keep it up.
If you died with Life Force left you messed up.

And here’s a tip for Necro’s Main-hand dagger:
Immobilize a melee opponent with Dark Pact and you can easily use Life Siphon without getting hit!
…or run away if you need to.

Off-hand Dagger can be great later on but I feel it’s pretty pointless at first unless you pair it with the Scepter.
This is because Deathly Swarm is best used for throwing your own conditions on the enemy and Enfeebling Blood’s Bleeding is a Condition, and gets better with Condition damage instead of Power.

Early on there aren’t that many enemies that use a lot of Conditions, so you won’t have much to send back at them unless you use Corruption skills. (and Corruption skills are best paired with the Scepter…)

Also swap out your Blood Fiend for Consume Conditions asap if you didn’t already.
Consume Conditions is just much better most of the time.
Well of Blood isn’t too shabby either.

I didn’t like using daggers. I usually like to play range so…. I think Staff + Scepter/Focus is the choice for me. I think you have to learn the mechanics of GW2 type combat.

Usually combat starts with me putting down a putting down a bunch of Marks on staff and switch to just spam attack skills on Scepter/Focus. Then switch back to Staff and put down more wells.

I also play Necro to be a minion master. So I tend to have a lot of pet skill for 6-10 and just stay out of the hot zone as much as possible. Double wasd to dodge incoming attack as I see them.

If you spec for wells, well of blood is awesome. Nothing like having a good ole’ melee standing in a healing spring that’s also doing some life siphon and give you protection.

Well of blood is also really good for MMing since it heals your pets also…. I think that’s the only way I found to heal pets so far.
