Necros are fine in...
So just chill everyone,
:’D
If they were fine in sPvP why aren’t there more of them? It’s not like the class is terribly complicated to play and you’d think deathshroud providing a second healthbar to account for player error would work wonders, right? You can’t even try and use the whole ‘but their counter is really popular in sPvP’ argument because the most common classes in PvP right now are Eles and Engis, both of which the Necro is actually pretty strong against! So no, I completely disagree with your assessment that they’re fine in PvP.
Now on to WvW… yes, the class is part of the meta. No, the class does not provide anything really special. They’re in the meta for AE DPS alone because the only strategy that anyone uses in WvW is zerging with omniblobs. All that boon removal, spreading of condis, and fear that Necros provide? No one cares… it’s the damage on 2 wells and nothing else. And that’s strictly talking zergs. As a roaming class, the Necro falls flat by being outright countered or outmatched by most of the classes out there. Certainly the most common roaming classes. So even in WvW I’d argue we’re not ‘fine’.
Try not to oversell the class so much. Just because it’s in the meta doesn’t mean things are fine. And if you can give me a single reason to explain why so few Necros play at a high level I’d love to hear it.
Necro is actually quite dull if you play in the standard zerging role. At least, that’s what I find.
The problem with necro roaming is that you’re often quite slow, although I can still have some fun with it (probably more fun if I was better at necro). It’s also difficult to do it if you don’t use certain utility skills. For instance, minionmancers just flat out won’t work in WvW at all. And if you’re going with a roaming team, you’re often better just doing coordinated thief strikes or medi guard bursts if you want to be really effective.
They can fare a bit better in sPvP IMO because they can localize the combat around points more, although I don’t keep up with the high level competitive scene to really know who’s doing what up there.
They’re fine in PVE, too. Only a tiny percent of the player base is all about the meta speed-run side. I do just as good if not better than my guildies in fractals.
EDIT: Spelling
Necros are NOT fine in dungeons. Yes, they’re fine in casual groups, but in high end fractals they’re basicly useless. Not only do they offer nothing, they also have limited utility to live with.
And no, It’s not a TINY percent. Most of what’s left for the dungeon community are people who are big on group comp and the like, let’s also not forget chances are new dungeons will not be in HoT, but FRACTALS will continue. So even HIGHER level fractals = worse for the poor Necro. :P
If Anet plans to have this ‘Endgame Content’ they speak of, they have to make all classes viable, you can’t have classes that have NO place in a game mode. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not one of those super “They’re so terrible, woe is my class!” types, but 2+ years of this isn’t acceptable at ALL.
Necro main since beta, MMO fanatic and avid beta tester.
For WvW at least, necros are probably the single most important class in the “Battleship” meta. They ARE the damage in group fighting due to their area denial and their massive AoE damage. Eles have fewer consistent AoE damage options and cannot be relied on to do bulk damage in WvW. They are also the most consistent source of stability stripping that prevents frontlines from going “balls-deep”. So they perform dual roles of area denial and aoe + stability and boon stripping via marks and wells.
With few necros, melee trains would just roll over any large sized group, and damage wouldn’t be enough to bring them down. I’d even say it’s because of necros that this new meta emerged. In GvG, they act as the main “snipers” of the pick team. They’re the ones who bring down important targets like enemy eles and the other pick team.

i dono what you want for necros tbh i find them awsome. sure the wells in wvw are doing the dmg. But thats just current metha you could also play a signet build and on haling/support role you can play condi dmg…
necro is not soo strong in 1v1s or so but he become stronger and stronger in groupfight either it is rogh dmg or any other support
