Hello guys!

So I’ve been doing alts lately and so far I have a Guardian, a Mesmer, an Engi and an Ele. And recently, RNGesus gave me a Sunless Weapon (I still don’t know which weapon I should choose, although I’m kinda leaning towards the Dagger) and I guess it was fate that led me to start a Necro.

So far, I enjoy it A LOT. I don’t care about the actual issues or if it has less to offer to the party than other professions in PvE. But I’m still wondering nonetheless :

1) What is the “to go” weapon if there is?
2) Is D/D any good? The last topic I read was about 2 years old.
3) Should I run a Power or Condition build? Which is better/fun in your opinion?
4) Any advice?

I mostly plan on playing PvP, roam around (solo/duo) in WvW and maybe do some dungeons but that won’t be my main activity on my Necro.

Thanks in advance! I’m in your hands fellow Necromancers.

In no particular order:

Outside of dungeons, Power or Condition is up to personal preference. Since Sunless weapons are all Rabid stats, I would suggest trying condition first, as you already have a good weapon. That said, if you find a group that doesn’t care about Necros being in the party, they probably don’t care if you’re a condition build either.

As far as “go to” weapon, most necros run Staff as one weapon set, but spend as little time as possible on it. The utility is fairly good for that weapon, but as a damage set, it sucks.

D/D is good. With dagger mainhand, all three off-hands are decent, so take your pick. Most pick Warhorn for sticking ability and sustain, but dagger is the second most popular choice for the condition transfer and weakness.

General advice? Learn to work Death Shroud into your play. Virtually all of a necro’s survivability is tied to it.

Dagger is something you’ll use a lot in both power and condi PvP builds and PvE too.

But if PvP is your main thing, then maybe get the Scepter, with Marjory’s Dagger when it comes back to the gemstore. The Scepter is amazing, I’ve been trying to get it for months now :/

The weapon will be ascended, yes? It should be account bound and not soul bound.

Also, one weapon stat type will not break your build so do not sweat it too much.

Condition Necromancer is not as… exciting as power. Generally, you need to kite or have minions draw aggro. Scepter is the Necro condi weapon. Staff and war horn are condition utility weapons but see a lot more use.

I like D/D for several reasons.

Condition transfer
Fully utilize the dagger traits (25% movement speed & 20% CD reduction)
Dual daggers looks good

It may not be for everyone and you might not want to go into dagger traits, I know a lot of people dislike the 25% movement trait. Personally I couldn’t live without it but I was never a big fan of the “current meta” and cookie cutter builds. Making your own build is one of the most fun things to do in GW2 in my opinion.

Dagger traits are in Blood Magic, which is why, I think, people have a hard time with those traits.

MH dagger and scepter are poor at generating LF so you will want axe or staff for support on weapon swap. Reaper’s Precision is a fair alternative to Weakening Shroud if you need LF.

OH dagger is very attractive for condition transfer, if you are running light on condition management.

Since when has mh dagger been bad at generating lifeforce? Scepter can be effective at generating lifeforce with smart usage of 3 which some people tend to forget to use for some reason or they just suck at timing when to use it.

But I’m 200% sure dagger is our best best best lifeforce generating weapon.
