My necro pve build (which i think is pretty common):

Dagger/warhorn axe/warhorn

Heal: Signet of vamp

Utilities: Signet of spite (or well of darkness), well of suffering, well of corruption, lich form

Traits: 6 in spite (signet mastery, chill of death, close to death). 5 in curses (weakening shroud, banshees wail). 3 in blood magic (vampiric precision).

If you take well of darkness for blinds, take one point out of blood magic, put ti in curses, and take blinds inflict chill.

Rotation: get up in that mobs face, use warhorn 5, wells, Death shroud 5, leave death sroud, go lich, spam one. cycle thorugh this. while lich is on CD, just spam 1 on dagger.

Use signet of vamp every time its up as well. Use dagger 2 (life siphon) as your heal.

In PvE I usually run with Axe+Focus and Dagger+Warhorn, and berserker stats on all gear.

For healing I use Consume Conditions. My utilities consist of Well of Suffering, Well of Corruption and Well of Power. Some times I swap one of these for Blood is Power, Spectral Armor or Spectral Walk. I use Lich Form as my elite skill.

The traits are 6 points in Spite, 2 points in Curses and 6 points in Soul Reaping. In spite I use Reaper’s Might, Axe Training and Close To Death. In Curses I use Focused Rituals, and in Soul Reaping I use Vital Persistence, Unyielding Blast and Death Perception.

Dagger is the main weapon to use outside of Death Shroud as it deals high damage and builds life force pretty fast with its auto-attack. Warhorn skill 5 is some extra damage and also contributes to your life force, Focus skill 4 is also good life force and damage. I avoid staying on axe for long, I only use the axe for quick life force right before or after I enter or exit Death Shroud. If you have axe up when you enter Death Shroud your damage will be higher than with dagger, which is the main reason to bring axe. Make sure to place your offensive wells down before you enter Death Shroud for max crit chance. If you can use Warhorn 5 before you enter Death Shroud it will help you stay in Death Shroud for longer and will benefit from the extra crit chance.

I some times use a build very similar to the one Darwec posted, but I don’t use axe and I swap between Focus and Warhorn offhand. Traits and skills are pretty much the same. Remember that you can flash Death Shroud as often as you can for Fury if you use that build or a similar one. You can check the DPS guild that’s stickied on the top of this forum section, it’s pretty much the same playstyle.

I answered but then realized it was a question for pve! OOPS!

For PVP

http://metabattle.com/wiki/MetaBattle_Wiki

Here you go. I’m pretty sure everyone will agree power is the easiest to be effective in as condi requires better positioning. D/WH gives great dps and life force regeneration. plus the daze is too valuable as it unblockable and will go through gearshield, shelter, etc.

Personally I take spectral walk instead of spectral armor and spectral wall instead of a second well. I take wall because it provides similar protection (minus the stunbreak) to spectral armor and it feels like having a second reapers mark. casting it on a downed ally can interrupt stomps and provide protection while rezzing. That is simply personal preference.

For pve I think 6 6 0 0 2 is standard with dagger/ focus.

For pve I think 6 6 0 0 2 is standard with dagger/ focus. just sit in DS as long as possible.

I was under the impression that sitting in DS for as long as possible was less DPS than using dagger?

Looking at my current build, the three hits from dagger do 864,627,1152 over 2.1 seconds (pulled the time from the gw2 wiki). So roughly 1258 dps. DS auto attack does 1251 damage over approximately 1.4 seconds (Again, form gw2 wiki). So roughly 893 dps?

Yeah I think you may be right. thats why meta battle suggest AA then locus AA then switch. AA . etc. Ill strike that out. I mainly pvp with the necro and pve with my ele.

After playing ele in pve I just feel guilty if I ever bring my necro along, because I know the damage I COULD be adding if i played another class. (even though I love my necro)

Same here after leveling my warrior. I just can’t bring my necro in dungeons or fractals knowing what I’m missing. And I usually play with my friends, so even if bring my necro no one complains.

I mean. thats exactly the reason i bring my necro. No one can ask me to stack might or give them an icebow. #lazynecro. I only take other classes when the party is really failing

6/6/x/x/x d/f d/w is highest possible dps in a coordinated group that will be stacking might for you, and providing vuln. If you aren’t getting enough might than 6/2/0/0/6 a/f d/w would win out because you can stack more self might and vuln on enemies.

Necros don’t have reflects, invulns, vigor, blocks,
extra dodges, real stability, mobility skills,
burst skills, sustain, or good support. GG ANET.
