Hi i want to make a necro without staff or minions, is that even legit or will i just be an ice cube in hell? I was thinking if going with D/F and S/D and i was wondering if this is even a good idea or will people think i am an idiot? please help and forgive my eng.

oh and i was thinking of using the stats 20/20/10/20

I don’t use staff in a number of my minion builds, it is perfectly fine. What game mode are you intending to use this in? (WvW/PvE/PvP?)

Most Necros don’t use any Minions at all.

As for Staff it’s very useful, but not mandatory.
You’ll find Conditions to be a pain in PvP without a Staff unless you use an Off-hand Dagger and Consume Conditions or spend Utility slots on it.
…but Necros usually run Consume Conditions anyway.
And many use off-hand dagger.

Power build, yeah you can do necro without staff and MM, just make sure you at least have offhand dagger in one weapon set for some condi removal might want to trait it in the blood line for faster condi removal and weakness.

Conditionmancer or berserker is for you.

Yeah you can do Necros just fine without staff or minions. You’re looking for power or hybrid builds, neither of which need staff.

Axe/focus – Dagger/Warhorn with no minions is great. I play that a lot.

0/20/10/20/20 in WvW.. although its not a common build, I like it.

30/25/0/0/15 in Spvp, more glassy but more burst and still really fun.

Putrid mark has been bugged for a while btw I suggest a different form of condition removal.

Putrid mark is still better than off-hand dagger 4, its just not as good as it was.

More reliable cleanse, yes, but I wouldn’t go so far as to call it flatly better. Dat 1/4s cast blind is pretty handy.

Anyway, you can go 30/10/0/0/30 and blow stuff up with well bombs. It can even work in tPvP if you have a decent team that coordinates CC to lock opponents down in the wells. I usually run that with D/WH, A/D (you can swap Axe for Scepter to make it a bit safer/easier to play in the beginning).

Minions are poo anyway.

Running without staff is completely acceptable. Its best use is in target-rich environments where its AoE can tag multiple targets at once. When used against single targets, it has the longest range, ability to transfer conditions, create a burst and apply AoE Fear but it is also your weakest weapon. Running without staff is perfectly fine for most PvE. For me, I often carry staff but do not use it much of the time.

When I trait for reduced cool-down on axe, dagger, or focus, I no longer need to change weapon sets in a fight due to their being on CD so, when using staff, I can just pop a few marks, wait for the CD on weapon change to clear and go back to my primary set.

No minion is ok.

No staff (best AoE weapon) is much harder.

You did not mention if it is for PvE, sPvP or WvW… but no minion is quite the default in all of them, sometimes I see minion Necros on PvE but on the other game modes it is quite rare.

About Staff it is possible, but most Necros use staff as it is our best weapon for AoE and have a good CC.

I already used power necro with axe and focus, and now I am condition necro using scepter and dagger, but the staff is always there as second option.
