So I’ve been asking a lot on different twitch streams what people think. Could a team with a power necro win one of these big gw2 tourneys or is it just not capable of competing at that level?

Most say necros don’t have enough mobility and escapability but could we if we used wurm and spectral walk effectively? I’m still learning the ropes in spvp and am getting better but still don’t know a lot about the game. But it would definitely be disappointing if my favorite class and build couldn’t be used if I ever did get to that level.

First be realistic in your expectations or you will get frustrated very quickly.

At the moment I would say a power necro would get countered to hard by a smart team to actually win. It relies on lich, ds 1, and daggers. Lich is easily countered by high level players low level plays panic and melt. DS 1 is so easy to dodge it’s ridiculous the only good thing about it is there is a neat trick where you can dodge and shoot at the same time. Daggers are amazing but for a class that is so susceptible to CC it can get you killed getting to close. Any time we try and do something to make up for our weaknesses we end up losing what makes us effective Least synergistic class in game =(

There is also wells and axe. Wells are good dps and area denial but people really just don’t stand in them so you get 1 pulse to hit and you might keep them off point for 2 seconds…. and even then I think wos is the only damaging well worth it. Axe…. there seem to be two schools of thought some people use axe to swap to for 3 and 2 just before going into ds or for chasing people down it has its uses there is no denying that. And my school where I pretty much take staff in every build and never use axe.

Could they win a tournament? Yes. Will they win a major international tournament? No.

I’m pretty sure power necro has won in NA before. But NA historically has inferior teamwork, so that is no surprise. The only significant niche that power necro brings is Lich form, which is easy to counter if you focus on it. Without lich power necro is just a really easy to focus power build that requires too much protection to run. You could bring other power builds that do the same thing (minus lich) but safer.

Appreciate the replies guys. So if I ever get to that level (doubtful) and I want to compete as a necro I guess condi would be my only option. Power necro is definitely what I enjoy most though so for those of u who are the same can u make a suggestion of a more viable power class that I might enjoy with a similar play style?

Power necro isn’t a first tier build.

Power necro starts off with zero death shroud and starts the game weak. Lich form is hard countered by the thiefs in almost every top tier team.

So you have a build that is weak in team fights at the start of the game, worthless as a bunker, and too slow to be a roamer.

The problem with being a power necro, is far and above it’s inability to escape effectively. Couple this with a general inability to apply consistent (Wells are not consistent) AOE power pressure. Yes dagger is now a great cleave weapon, however it is very tough to pull off in the AOE spam fest other classes can bring (Eles/engis oh hey look at the meta). Other problems power necros have in the current meta:

• Lack of reflects/projectile absorption (pew pew rangers can eat a power necro alive)
• Lack of access to boons for self. (Yes I know this is class design, it is still a major issue for necros.)
• Lack of stability/reliable stunbreaks.
• Lack of a good ranged power weapon (I would rather auto attack with staff than auto attack with axe.)
• Being unable to receive heals in DS, ( I am referring to team heals, this one thing would improve Necro sustain to an amazing level)

That being said, if you have a good team that knows how to peel for you, how to give stability and when to focus a target. A power necro can destroy a team fight in as little as 10 seconds (without lich form.)

I think Anet is worried about touching necros in a meaningful way right now. The last time necros got some serious love “dhuumfire” got introduced and necros became the most OP class this game had seen in a long time. I think the one thing that Anet needs to look at is the escapes and survivability of our class. When you look at classes like s/f eles and s/d thieves they have great damage and pretty good survivability. Necros need something similar for them to become a legitimate power build.

If you get to that level you will be able to make it work, you’ll find a way to play it. Just keep playing.

There is a team in NA that runs a power necro, sometimes two. They run a very silly comp with a player running a REZ ONLY build and they actually do ok. If you were to take their style and put it into the hands of better players I think the comp would actually be very very strong. The team is Radioactive and you can see them in action in some of the tourneys in NA on twitch.tv/guildwars2 past broadcasts.

I would say it’s perfectly viable. But I haven’t seen many good Power Necros yet.

Radioactive could use better necromancers on their team. If you go back and watch the NA wts qualifiers their necros dont really win any 1v1 and you can tell they heavily rely on lich form. The only thing they seem to do right is coordinate lich forms.

OK, so this guy seems to articulate most of the problems with this class pretty well. What do people think could be done to fix them and make power necro more viable? How would you give necros access to more reliable stunbreaks and stability without breaking them?

IMHO a quick fix might be to let necros start the match with 25% LF, but I know that would only go a very small part of the way towards fixing it.

OP was the power Necro wasn’t he? Other was running Dhuumfire?

This was the match against Euratein as well? Ranger just man handles Necro so easily. Especially when they’re power spec.

Love the conversation guys. It seems a lot of people think power necro is a viable build in NA tournaments due to team coordination not being that great compared to EU. So would it be true that if a team of superior coordination (an EU top team) took a power necro they would be fine?

It’s very interesting that the argument is somewhat split between it being a viable build to bring to a tourney and it being useless due to other similar classes being better. It was pretty much the same response when I asked around on twitch streams.

Keep in mind viable and optimal are always two different things. Many things are viable, only a few things are actually optimal. I personally don’t think power necros are optimal.

With that said though: Single people have changed the opinion of many about the viability of certain classes/builds. Maybe the community just lacks that one power necro that’s willing to make it happen. OP necro and Crysis in my opinion pretty much have made it work at a viable level they just need the team and general skills that conquest requires to get there and be successful.

I have more trouble fighting a good mesmer than a thief or engineer while playing power necro, add me in-game, may be I could show you some tips/tricks.

Power Necro is an excellent 1v1-er and supporting roamer for any fight with no medi guards or hambows focusing him.

Yes, it requires a little bit of team cooperation and you can’t push it into unfavorable fights. But once it joins the even fight, it can eliminate all non-armor bunkers (armor-bunkers are Surv Barkskin Ranger, Guard, Turret Engi or Warrior) in no time.

^A lot depends on your variation of Power build, but just for my case, Mesmers with reduced field for kiting are probably the easiest matchup (with slight exception for CI Mesmers).

THIS…this sums up everything about power necro and even necros in general.

I am a decent power necro,playing for almost 1 year as only power(never touched condi builds),but when my friend who is very good pvper,but new to ranger,just won every duel agaisnt me on pew pew.Just one time I beat him when used lich and exit lich form right after(for the stability).

About wells,ppl saying it is not effective,it is not true,cause you need to know how to use it,as in on enemy downed player while ppl trying to ress and on ppl you immoblized with dagger for examp,you can also fear them in wells.

You dont get 30s stabilty anymore when in-out exiting elites.

Also in 1v1 im pretty sure power necro wins over power ranger , even with 0% lf. Unless you meant in team, there ofc the better team protecting their zerkers will make them look godlike.

I struggle to think how he’d get to him with 0 LF. Ranger has KB and more cc from pets, sometimes entangle as an elite as well, dagger necro would be dead before he crossed the distance to him.

Flesh wurm :P or immediately spectral armor stunbreak and ds3+2 combo.
I dont mean its a clear win, just that in a pure 1v1 id give 55-60% win chance to necro, and the number would only get bigger with more lifeforce and obstacles for LoS.

Power necro is hard countered by d/p thieves. Lich form = steal (rip stability) → use stolen skill → win. I always enjoy seeing power necros on the enemy team, it just mean that the enemy team is one player short ^^

this is so true but its any theives that can steal not just d/p necro attacks are usaully to slow to deal with s/d either
