Question about Necro Power Builds WvW
- Wtf exactly is the power build trait allocation? I’ve seen everything from 30/20/0/0/20 to 20/20/10/20/0 to something in between that.
The “standard” is 30/10/0/0/30, but there are all sorts of wacky combinations people have tried out.
- Is this a full power build or is it more of a hybrid thing?
There are hybrid builds, but “power builds” are full power.
- Condi builds are so fun to play because of crazy AoE’s control, by far the most AoE’s out of every character I played. Does the power build also have reliable AoEs?
Yeah, but the power build’s AoE tends to be much closer range than condi’s. Well of Suffering hits like a truck, as does Life Transfer, but those two are pretty much it. Unyeilding Blast can turn Life Blast into some serious AoE damage in a line. Staff #4 can hit insanely hard, though, and Staff #1 isn’t all that terrible either. A poor man’s Unyeilding Blast.
- What, exactly, are the weaponset for a powerbuild? I think it uses the staff but I have seen axe/focus, axe/warhorn, etc etc.
Power builds have a diverse set of options here.
In general, you’re going to pick either Axe or Dagger mainhand as your “primary” weapon. There are arguments to be made for either, and it really depends on the situation and your personal preference.
All our offhand options can work in a power build. /D is purely defensive; /Warhorn is great when you know you need another interrupt, if you’re running a life siphon build, or if you just want the movement speed boost without slotting Signet of the Locust; and /Focus is the high-damage option that’s best when you know you’ll be facing opponents with boons or need to kite (it’s a really good PvP choice).
Staff is also a popular secondary-set option, but it’s mostly used for its utility.
Putting this together, D/D or D/W + A/F can be good, or D/F+Staff, or A/F+Staff. It’s very situational.
- What’s the gear of choice? I have a feeling its not full zerker…
Full zerker can work. I have some Knight’s armor mixed in to taste, just for the armor pieces where it’s most efficient.
Mostly I’m not just looking for a link to a build or anything, I’m looking for a theme of “this is how you play power necro in wvw. In an ideal world open with this and do this when you need to hit the oh crap button” etc. Thank you all in advance for any advice!
It’s getting really late so I need to go to bed, but I’ll try to come up with some playstyle advice tomorrow if someone hasn’t already beaten me to it by then!
How to Condi Reaper on a budget

My power build is 30/0/20/20/0 =3
Do not be deluded into thinking that to have an effective necro power build for WvW that you have to have points in the power trait (spite). You definitely can have an effective necro power build without doing so. You simply need to determine your role in WvW – are you going to roam or small group or run with a zerg? My necro build is built/designed to be run with a zerg.

Craaaaap, the forums ate my response!
Quick version: I like both zerging and roaming on my power Necro. I use 30/10/0/0/30, D/F+Staff, with Consume Conditions, Spectral Grasp, Well of Suffering, Signet of the Locust/Flesh Wurm, and Plague/Flesh Golem.
Zerging is pretty straightforward: stay safe, throw damage when safe. Usually this means dropping marks and dancing back into your zerg, then switching to your main set when the zergs clash and dropping your Well of Suffering and Life Transfer. Dealing damage is easy, since you have boatloads of it. Staying safe is where it can get trick. I find a combination of good positioning, careful DS use, pre-placing Flesh Wurms, popping Plague in panic moments, and knowing when to run keeps me from dying much in zergs.
Plague makes you borderline immortal, by the way. Pop #2 and you can dive through most zergs with near-impunity (the biggest danger is leaving Plague with too many conditions or getting chain-immobilized). I keep this slotted at all times while zerging as well as whenever near an allied tower, since it can seriously save your bacon. Don’t get too kitteny, you’re not ACTUALLY immortal while a Plague, it can just feel that way sometimes.
Roaming can be trickier.
1v1, I rarely have much trouble. Some fights can take longer, sometimes I can screw up and let someone escape, but I don’t usually die in duels (I’m not trying to brag, it’s just that most people who roam are really, really bad). Flashing into DS for a quick Doom at the right time can almost auto-win a lot of fights. My Flesh Golem also makes fights easier since most people ignore him even though he deals a lot of damage and comes with a strong knockdown once every 40 seconds.
Your goal in a duel is to pin your target down and suffocate them to death. Spectral Grasp → Dagger 3 → Well of Suffering → Focus 4 → Focus 5 (if necessary) → Dagger autos is a lot of damage and CC. There are a lot of Utility options available to you as a roaming power necro, that’s just the rotation that works best for me. Bottom line is, if you stay on the offensive your foe will eventually run out of healing and condi cleanses, then make a mistake and die. Just keep using DS to absorb their burst while laying down some hurt, then switch back to your weapons and put them in a sleeper hold.
A quick note about thieves: DS #4 and kitten them through stealth, so feel free to carpet bomb with those if you know a thief is in the area at low health. When fighting a Thief, make sure you’re ready to switch to Staff at any time. If they start to lose the fight, 95% of them will drop a Shadow Refuge to cover their escape but Reaper’s Mark dropped directly in the center (even from an untraited Staff) is a big lolnope to that as long as you drop it fast enough.
1v2s are winnable as well, though you really have to play well here. You want to focus on one target, whomever you think will be easier to kill. Splashing some CC onto the other foe can make killing your target a bit easier. These can get a bit dodgy, though. Beware of stunlockers and don’t be afraid to retreat until you’re ready to strike. If you know you’re going into a 1v2, Spectral Wall or Spectral Armor can be invaluable alterations.
1v3+ gets very difficult unless your opponents are all terrible. I won’t generally attempt a 1vX unless it’s directly outside an allied tower and I have a Flesh Wurm sitting inside directly behind the entrance portal and Plague equipped, in which case it can be fun to troll them for a while.
I think that’s it for the basics. Lemme know if you have other questions!

You’re missing 10 somewhere. In soul reaping maybe?
Miranda Zero – Ele / Twitch Zero – Mes / Chargrin Soulboom – Engi
Aliera Zero – Guardian / Reaver Zero – Necro
My build is 30/10/0/30/0 Life siphon build. One or two life siphons are meh, but grab every siphon in the game (save for runes of vampirism which are bugged) and it adds up.
Here they all are: Siphon on hit, Siphon on Crit, Food Siphon on Crit, Dagger 2 siphon, Sigil of Blood siphon. Signet of Locust is also technically a siphon.
Quick notes: healing power effects Sigil of Blood, Locust Signet and Dagger 2 heal strength. Thankfully just by going 30 into blood and 30 into power you will have 400ish Healing power without even gearing for it.
Other then the focus on siphons, it is a typical well bombing build. Dagger + Focus, Staff secondary. I usually do Focus 5, Dagger 3, get close, drop wells, Focus 4, autoattack for one or two sets and then pop into DS and do a fear, then DS 5 and pop a couple lifeblasts into them. As my LF runs low, I hit DS4 and if I got any juice left, I end with a DS 2 claw so they’re poisoned, chilled, and I’m on top of them wailing away. As soon as wells are off CD I repeat the process.
On the defensive side, I can use Dagger 2 siphon in conjunction with Focus 5 and 4 to kite my enemy and heal myself at the same time. If things are really going rough for me in a big fight I will use Locust Signet. Wells return decent hp if hitting 5 targets also. The LF generation from the D/F lets you soak more damage in DS.
As for AoE, Staff, wells + shroud 5+4 are enough to wipe out most things.
People will kitten all over life siphons, but believe me I have tested countless builds and in real world situations, this is the one that always amazes me.
