Necromancer has very few ways to deal with focus fire. Shroud + Rise is usually not enough in a teamfight so you need to position yourself on safe spots like ledges. Flesh wurm is also handy to escape. I’m afraid that’s the best you can do by yourself, but reaper is much stronger with the support of teammates.
Yeah, Necromancer/Reaper relies heavily on proper postioning. A well placed wurm can work wonders for getting out of a bad spot.
Positioning is probably the problem if you’re running the meta build. If you’re like me when I started playing necro, you probably anticipated on being tankier than you actually are and ran straight in to mid on team fights. However, you want to hang out towards the back of your teammates unless you have shroud fully charged.
For example, if you start a game going to mid, hang back and let your teammates run in first. Generate life force while in staff and when you’re full, swap to warhorn, run in, go into shroud, and whale away on a target. Just make sure you have a plan to disengage before you run out of shroud if you need to.
This strat will vary depending on what’s going on, of course, but it’s a good general rule of thumb.
I would start with http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Reaper_-_Corruptionmancer
but move your way up to http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Reaper_-_Signet_Chillomancer once you get more skilled

I’m not sure I totally understand why that is a move-up in terms of effectiveness or skill required.
I do agree that Signet spec absolutely wrecks in 1v1 fights—especially against all the bunkers you see these days—but Curses puts out more consistent damage in sustained team fights while allowing for more defensive utility slots to help you escape coordinated bursts. With Signets I feel like you can pick a target and ruin their day pretty fast, but then you’re sort of left just AoE dot cleaving from behind a pillar or interrupting around in Reaper form while your signets are on cooldown.
Maybe I’m missing something? But unless I open the prematch screen and see that I’m up against something like, “Ele, Ele, Rev, Engineer, War” I would stick with Corruptionmancer .
