It seems like every person feels that a class should be balanced around their inability to cope with them in a 1v1.

Well, to be fair, Reaper is designed to be better against multiple foes than just one, so if it is extremely strong in 1v1s, then something’s wrong.

That said, it’s isn’t exactly overpowered in 1v1s, so that’s not a real concern.

Probably will work. Been using a lot of close attacks with Revenant and Thief recently so that might be why. Thanks to the few with kind replys back.

No. Reaper Shroud is not OP. It’s good, don’t get me wrong but definitely not OP.

Doesn’t need nerfs, leave it as it is. You just have to try to avoid getting close to a Reaper while it’s up and/or evade the Skill 5 and Skill 4 and you’ll be fine.

I’ve played against a Reaper and as a Reaper and in no way does that scream OP to me.

Probably will work. Been using a lot of close attacks with Revenant and Thief recently so that might be why. Thanks to the few with kind replys back.

So you’ve decided reaper needs nerfs based on your experience with a brand new class you haven’t practiced for more than two beta weekends, and a completely new elite spec on a squishy class that requires finesse to play well.

You need to think things through better before jumping for the nerf button.

Look at what’s dealing damage to you and dodge those attacks. Is it Gravedigger, a huge spin? Executioner’s Strike, where the scythe is held up in the air? All of the attacks with big damage are slow and give clear indicators on when it’s being used. You can also just avoid being in melee range to stay safe.

RS damage is less than weapon skill damage! Necro/Reaper weapon skill damage is less than all other classes, unless your health gets below the threshold. What exactly are you even talking about? Even if it did magically manage to produce some decent damage numbers in melee range, why are you meleeing a specialization that has nothing but melee?

People just need to learn to deal with reaper. But reaper has some big innate weaknesses that people will learn to deal with soon enough.

1) Reaper, though less so than normal necro, is still an attrition class. The reaper isn’t killing you with pure extreme damage, as much as it’s killing you by outlasting you with 2 life bars. I’ve seen most people die thinking they would burst me down. And then realizing their on 30% HP by the time they got rid of shroud.

2) Reaper is real melee class. Just like you don’t let a ranger sit and snipe you from 1200 range without countering. Just like you don’t just dance around in melee range of a Hammer/GS warrior you have to play in on their weakness.
Necro’s really don’t have that much for range. The staff seems to do a lot of damage, but it’s sporadic. And necro’s pretty much gave up their main range nuke (Life Blast from Death Shroud) when they picked up reaper shroud.

3) Necromancers are still pretty vulnerable for hard CC as we have no active defenses. Reaper has stability, but only in shroud form and that is counterable as well (outlast it, or land 2 hard CCs at once as it’s only 1 stack).

Seriously coming into the necro forum and telling us we need a nerf (as a mesmer), we must be moving up in the world!

AFAIK all the classes should try to be balanced, that means the better player will win every time. I am sorry if you are so set in your ways that necro should just be a free bag, but if you want to defeat one now, maybe up your game and learn our weaknesses.

Trying not to be rude here, but did you expect us to agree with you after so many years of neglect while we got stomped 90% of the time by mesmers and only being wanted in a WvW zerg. Your complains are falling on deaf ears here; much like ours were for years.

Condi mesmers are exactly what every Reaper dreams of dueling. Reapers are designed to thrive in target-rich environments and a duel against a Mesmer means they almost always have four targets to scale from. On top of that, condition builds have always fared poorly against Necros due to supplying the Necro with ammo. Reaper does nothing to change how strong Necros are against condition builds of all stripes.

I do think that reaper has got an awful lot of damage for the tankiness they bring. I don’t think it’s “elementalist OP”, but it’s definitely strong on conquest play for example.
Problem is you can’t just flat out nerf reaper, because it still has the big weaknesses I mentioned before (no active defenses; easily CC-able with minor coordination/timing; next to 0 ranged options and low on gap closers)

It does bring a lot of tankiness, for sure. As well as pretty decent damage. However, it only melts your opponent if they’re total glass cannon. So, realistically, we’re pretty well off with Reaper and other classes are just upset that they can’t beat us easily anymore

  • Reaper Shroud is pretty much a walking AoE. You don’t stand in Lava fonts, Wells, or Rapid fire, you try to get away from them. You should do the same when you enter Reaper Shroud.
  • Once you go below 50% HP rotate out of the fight or run away and heal. Any player near a Reaper with <50% HP is setting himself up for a burst and giving it free sustain.
  • By ganging up close against a Reaper as if it was a regular Necromancer you are actually doing it favor. Multiple enemies hit at once equals more sustain and might for the Reaper.
  • Range and kite are it’s weak points.
  • Trying to burst a full HP Reaper is a bad idea.

To be honest, the Reaper is really powerful in reaper’s shroud right now specially if you combine it with dhuumfire on a celestial build, now that it has better life force management, a more reliable death’s charge and a better greatsword to back it up.
I’m not going to judge it as OP, cause I haven’t had much time to try it out extensively in the recent BWE, but Robert Gee has certainly improved the Reaper quite a lot.

Generally though, as others have mentioned, I would expect reaper’s best counter to be ranged attacks because Reaper has been specifically designed for melee.

Well i found too that reaper is really in a strong place. I’m playing herald all the day and, some times, switching to reaper. I can say i have always been in first or second in unranked pvp with more ease. Reaper is really powerfull now. Really tanky and really strong dammage in shroud, maybe a bit to strong. With dhumfire and celestial or barbaric amulet you just crush all foes. Don’t need ups at all. At last for shroud.

If we assume that Reaper is powerful enough to warrant nerfs and needs to be taken down in he sustain and damage departments, then what are we left with in the end? Being so powerful and sustainable is what we gain for being so easily kited and being so immobile.

I played reaper for many hours this beta, and let me tell you – a well-coordinated team can still burst you down just fine if you are playing with Cele amulet, it will be a bit harder if you are running soldiers, but then you will be doing really low damage. In either case – it is nothing unseen. It is strong to be sure, maybe we need to see some limitation to Blighter’s boon since this seems to be the target of people right now. But, to be honest, knowing our history, people will cry until we get nerfed into unviability, or until enough time passes for them to come to grips with the existence of reaper and figure out how to play around it.

I can not wait to see what tweaks we will see after this BWE, but I certainly hope that even if we get shaved a bit, we will still be viable. I feel like we are really close to being unviable if too much gets nerfed, and we will be a laughing stock as people nuke us the moment we get in melee. We will have to wait and see, I suppose.

We’re in agreement there, then. Even with soldier gear/ammy, Reaper tears through things. Doesn’t burst as much as other classes, but you throw a tanky reaper into the middle of a bunch of enemies and he’ll come out of it alive and (relatively) well, albeit a bit grumpy

i was on my reaper and i have to say in melee 1v1 i owned almost all the matches i traited so shroud 1 applied flame and i was a full rapid build. but vs range was very difficult i had to change to a pull utility and stack any stun and cc but if i failed likely died.

Well spectral grasp seems pretty mandatory for me, i’m having excellent result with. The thing to take care is that, in hot there is gonna to be more melee than range. Necro are going melee, engi too and there is revenants. Only guardian are going range but it seems plenty of them hate dragonhunter so maybe many of them are still in melee. There is gonna be melee meta.

Pretty much this. It is like reverse Longbow ranger – you want to keep the gap as wide-open as possible. It has the worst gap closer options period out of any melee spec out there, so it is a pretty solid counter.

Hi guys, thief here.

I was so excited this week end to be able to test the daredevil but I got really disappointed with it so I did test revenant conditions bunker (fire and torment), revenant full zerk and necro full zerk in WvW.

I did play against some reapers with both revenant builds, I fought the same reaper twice with my revenant conditions build with no success but I was really close to kill him in both of the encounters, those encounters where 1v1 with no 3rd party inference. The key for the victory was conditions cleanse in his/her end and bigger hp pool.

I killed any other reaper that I encounter with the zerker build using long range attacks with the 2H hammer, they were pretty manageable while you stay far from them.

I really enjoyed to play with the zerker reaper, it has a really awesome output damage, if you eat a Well of Suffering, then greatsword 3 and 2, oh boy, that is probably gonna obliterate you but I found really hard to land all of these just because those two skills have a clear animation and big cast times.

I think the reaper is probably the most dangerous close combat class a part from the thief but hey, look at the thief, who think he is op?.

There is no way that the reaper is OP people just need to learn how to counter him, there is too many people jumping into the nerf button too easy, the PU Mesmer one was just hilarious.

Well, to be fair, Reaper is designed to be better against multiple foes than just one, so if it is extremely strong in 1v1s, then something’s wrong.

That said, it’s isn’t exactly overpowered in 1v1s, so that’s not a real concern.

Ontop of what you said, Shouts are designed to be stronger v more players which is how they are. Not the reaper itself.

As I run a build that clears condi’s, even that can’t stand a Reaper’s shroud skills, my characters just are no match to the pure damage a reaper is doing and I find the reaper being just a little bit too much over powered.

And yet you gave no info of value here :P

Did it not occour to you that Reaper is primarily direct damage-based? Having a ton of condi clears doesn’t help as much to prevent their damage.

I’ve played against Reaper’s with other classes and different builds but it just seems that I can’t find a way to go about any of their burst reaper skills completely draining my health on not just one, but several characters with my different builds. Thats all.

Have you tried not being in the face of something that is supposed to be themed after a killer monster? Or did you even consider dodging that 2s animation with that 3m scythe? range it, it dies. Let it come close, you die.

Reaper is so overpowered, especially condition reaper. It needs a hard nerf… my pu mesmer had a hard time vs a reaper necro running a condi build and fire spam in shroud. With duelist traits, a mesmer should effectively duel and defeat ANY class or player 1 on 1 with ease. Please fix reaper before launch because its not even close to fair now. It is borderline like stealth trapper condi thieves which kill you without ever being seen accept you can see them and they simply have 2 hp bars and burst you down with extreme damage
