What utility or goodies does a reaper offer the group in instanced encounters, especially raids? I understand condition damage is the focus, but what sets them apart if anything? Also, is using a viper setup viable in open world encounters? Thank you.

Nothing apart from Epidemic really. Otherwise its just reliable dps + condi clear from plague sig. You can drop reaper and go core nec for blood magic to get some extra support if your party needs it I guess. Transfusion is pretty good in encounters like Matt and Sloth. I mean you can stay reaper and drop death magic, but if your JHs all end up dying its a bigger dps loss then not being a reaper. Blood magic support should not be needed though if everyone else pulls their weight.

Transfusion ftw. Reaper is good at condition damage but not great. It is very good at being a tanky condition build. Do a half-scritt job as a condition-mancer and res’ the dps so they can keep going. It is a team effort. Even if you do not do the highest dps, acting as tank and healer for the condition professions is good.

Reaper Cc is useful

The nice thing about Epidemic is that things like the incidental burns the Eles put out get copied at your strength, not theirs.

After chill nerf I only use it if I need the CC and also for movement, Death’s charge is useful at VG green circles and for Matthias, when you place corruptions and poison, but its far from mandatory.

It wasn’t a nerf for condi builds. It was a huge buff.

Depending on what boss you’re doing, VG in particular, people will want it for Boon Stripping/Corrupting, otherwise, people just want us to play the porous “press 2 buttons” condi Epidemic thing.

Huge buff, how? In what universe o.O Just explain to us how do you stack chill in a raid environment? And even more important how do you keep applying chills so the new trait is as effective as the previous one?!

He’s half right. It’s not a huge buff by any means, but under optimal circumstances the new Deathly Chill adds slightly more dps than the old trait in standard rotations mostly because of RS4 and Dagger 4. But it’s so much less reliable than the old variant that I’d say that most of the time it is going to do less. Either way the impact is numbers small enough as to be insignificant in PvE and Raids.

Well Necro is in great demand and that’s a wonderful thing to see after so many years of the ele/guard/warrior pve meta. What makes it even more special is how strong a role necro can play in the raids, ie the hardest pve content.

As people have already mentioned Epidemic is very useful especially in fights such as the sloth and Gors and Sabatha adds. Not only that but the use of death line, Lich and Rise can build up a LARGE amount of minions/rats to put lots of bleeds on targets as well as being very amusing to watch. Necro also has a great reflect in the corrosive posion which can reflect slublings damage while damaging the sloth. The plague signet is also very useful in that fight too. One other nice touch is it is one of the few classes that can be welcomed in a raid in its VANILLA format. Some people actually switch out the Reaper line for Blood Magic. Transfusion can be very useful if your main healer is struggling to support the group or u have too many downs.

It has a nice amount of damage vs the ability to stay alive with its large health pool and shroud. I rarely ever die as a necro in raids. On my ele, one mistake and Im screwed.

As a class it has come of age and long gone are the days when u could be booted from a Dungeon for simply BEING a necro.

Reaper is a safer easier tempest.

Staff tempest = ranged dps + aoe spikes. No CC, main example is staff#2 on Gorseval orbs.

Fresh air tempest = best melee dps + some CC and mini support (heals, reflect). No ranged.

Reaper/base necro = ranged dps + aoe spikes. Decent CC, Passive group condi clear, Survives 2-3x more and unique ability to teleport several bodies out of aoe/poison fields.
Does 70% of tempests dps, but may come closer with less downstate time and good epidemic bounces.

If you want to set 4minute record – take tempest.
If you want to oneshot with pugs in 6 instead of 5minutes – take necro.

Considering the fact that under the old system, Revenant, Condi Druid, Tempest, Mesmer, Engineer, and other necros, all would overwrite your chill resulting in 0 damage. It’s safe to say you do significantly more damage now than you did before in most comps for raids.
