As this expansion comes to a close, I couldn’t help but reflect on how necro got to this point.

Guild Wars 2 Release
PvP: Necro was mediocre overall. Only had two powerful eras, Minion Master (was nerfed a month later), and Power Lich (nerfed after four months).
PvE: Master of open world. Brought into dungies if no one else was available.
WvW: Was always good, but not a war, guard, mesmer, or ele.

Heart of Thorns
PvP: Power was good for the first month, but was never the same after blighter boon nerf. Condi was/is the only viable spec.
PvE: Master of open world. Good in fractals. Only useful in raids when epidemic is used or when lich jagged horrors build was used.
WvW: Useful in condi heavy meta.

Overall, necro has had almost the same journey as engineer, guardian, and thief. Has had some bright spots, but has always been middle or below for past five years. I can’t help but thinking Warrior and Elementalist have a developer that is dedicated to the profession and really care about it.

The only glimmer of hope is ranger’s story. Before Heart of Thorns, it hardly shined. This expansion did amazing things to ranger. In every aspect of the game, it was useful.

Keep your heads up, fellow necros, we might see our turn September 22nd.

Feel free to debate or add.

You are misremembering history. Necromancer was awful at release because of interest in the class at beta. It took more than two years to get out of the garbage can.

Then one week Dhuumfire came along and a lot of people flocked to the class for the new style. It still wasn’t OP even then.

But it was nerfed back into the garbage can.

Then people were really interested in well designed Reaper skills during the HOT beta, and the class got nerfed hard again at release.

This time, I don’t think people are interested in a turret spec with extra F keys to press (more than elementalist) and boring non greatsword weapons with long cool downs and “1-spam”.

So, the class will not get nerfed due to beta excitement. Instead, the Scourge will get nerfed because somebody will play with both minions and the turrets and pvpers, who hate both on a conceptual level, will loudly demand nerfs (not to fix stuff that’s broken, but to take unwanted fight play styles out the game).

So something new will happen September 22.

#24 leaderboard rank North America.

Spot on. Its only fair for scourge to get the same treatment. After all then itll be balanced like nec reap and create…diversity.
