SOAC Revenge Tourney 2nd Place Finish!
For those who were disappointed with the performance, There were several teams that felt they weren’t represented as well as they wanted to be. However, that’s okay.
Remember this was our first attempt and trial run. Did things go poorly for the Necromancers? Sure, but I trust Gibbly, and I feel he will have a better gameplan this time around. I know some of you were feeling that it was badly done.
That’s fine, this is why the event works. This reminds me of the Nugget fans reactions after the Warriors knocked them out of the playoff. We gladly appreciate everyone’s opinions and next month we are going to work hard to put on an event that’s even better.
EU Teams get ready!!
Honestly everyone, this wasn’t set up in a manner to be a “fair” contest, it was for fun. I realize its disappointing we didn’t win (it annoyed me a bit as well), but in the end it just wasn’t set up in a way that each team got a fair chance at winning. Some teams practiced a lot more than others, some teams had much more experienced people, some really took it seriously and wanted to win, others went in to have fun.
There will be the possibility of having a much more serious tournament profession later, which could be really cool (having actual tryouts and using all high ranking players instead of just whoever happened to sign up), just try not to blow too many blood vessels over this one :P
On a side note, I will have videos up from my perspective of the fight in about an hour for people to watch. I’d love to hear comments, suggestions, w/e, both about the gameplay and the video recording. Especially let me know if you’d like me to keep it high quality (I’m running on medium-high settings but that means I record around 20 fps) or lower the quality a little to get better fps.
A little preparation can go a long way and I personally will be on here in a little over an hour contacting our necro sign ups to see if we can’t get in sync.
I’m online right now practicing with my build, will be online for a fair bit today in PvP.

3 and a half hours to go. Don’t miss it
Guarantee the eu necro team would dominate np. Everyone ive played with so far on the eu events has had solid individual skill with their class.
So how do we communicate. Is anyone in game practicing? Is the team already formatted?

Talk to Bhawb or Gibbly
Aaaa… so this is what you meant yesterday when you crashed our little “we own them” party. I would have liked to be a part of that… to troll some more with Nash and Blood…
I may not be the most experienced in PvP since i lack… well the experience, making youtube guides takes a loooong time, but… i do well as a strategic commander…

2nd Place this time, a bit different of a result. I’ll be getting up my gameplay footage when I can, I forgot to record some of the games (the ranger ones).
Where are the official tournament videos posted? I’ve been looking and can’t find them. I want to know what the announcers were saying during our games. :p
If you go to twitch.tv/soacgaming you will find our matches leading up to the finals, the finals are on twitch.tv/blu42; look under past broadcasts. I imagine that TowerdiveTV will be uploading the VODs soon as well, last time it took them right around 24 hours.
I think my highlight from the caster’s side was them (jokingly) giving Flesh Golem MVP of the Guardian matches :P

I’ve looked all over this website and can’t find any of todays matches. You’re going to have to give me a direct link. They don’t have these videos in any of the channels shown on the left or the right.
That would be why. They’re not properly named. “Rangers vs Thieves”. I didn’t realize we were thieves. :p
Atleast we did better. I’d argue that Avarice was the primary reason for that, though.
Could’ve won the whole thing :/
I’d agree that he was the primary reason. He pulled us all into a party yesterday and we practiced for a solid 3-4 hours, with around an hour of warmup this morning. He really pushed the communication so that when we were actually in the tournament, Gibbly didn’t need to babysit us (or basically play for us) like the other coaches did. That was a huge reason we won.
The other reason was the player skill flip. Thursday we had a lot of newer players, and something my friend noticed (he was sitting next to me), was that a lot of them just weren’t playing at a very high level, even compared to me (and I’m far from top tier). Not only did we have more experienced players, but the other teams we faced (up until the Mesmers) either had the same or lower skill level.
And no. We had multiple really high level Necromancers watching the tournament, and none of them knew how to counter the Mesmers. They counter everything we can do. If we leave a single point uncovered, they will portal there and take it (or at least get the neut), and be back to the main fight by the time we even get there. If we stay on points, we are undermanned everywhere else because with their portal use they can always have 5 men in the fight and still guard their points. The multiple shatters made it impossible to avoid them all, and because of Mesmers’ very strong escape mechanics, the only time we could burst a target down successfully is if they messed up.
Overall that match just highlighted pretty much every weakness Necros have in PvP.

God, this.
Dealing with mesmers 1v1 is enough of a chore as it is, but add 4 more of them and it was just down right impossible to keep track of a single mesmer with them constantly going invisible all of the time. This made it impossible to focus a single target due to target calling breaking on stealth/invis. Then add phantasms which can still do truck loads of damage while the mesmer is invisible. We basically lost every single team fight because of this. They would just rotate continuously in and out of invis while still applying tremendous AOE damage. Then you have the can of worms that is distortion when they are visible.
I’m not calling mesmers OP, but for necros who have no teleports, vigor, or evasion skills to avoid the shatters with, and only 2 dodge rolls, saying “Just dodge the shatters!” doesn’t work when you have 15 clones doing this at random intervals. You’re gonna take a majority of them to the face at some point and DS can only absorb so many shatters. It was just unavoidable.
I think most of us got pretty frustrated during the mesmer fights. A lot of us were getting rather cranky during those matches because of how badly we were getting countered. Hell, third match I couldn’t do anything because they kept intercepting and out maneuvering me while I was trying to get to my destinations. You’re never supposed to fight in between points if you can help it, but what do you do when you play a class that cannot disengage when necessary? Necros are pretty much forced to commit to any fight 100% that lands on them whether they want to or not.
With all that said, I am still very impressed we made it as far as we did. Good job necros!

Mesmers when played correctly are unbeatable, same thing goes for Thieves.
Necromancers have a much, MUCH higher skillcap to achieve that same effectiveness.
But beating the Mesmers was possible, you just had to have near-inhuman coordination. You can interrupt Shatters using Staff, and you could’ve easily used Plague Signet to send back the Mesmer conditions to a single target, and epidemic’d them all to death.
Again, that requires extreme coordination. Too bad you guys didn’t have enough time to practice.

Watched the whole thing live. I really liked your match against rangers on Kyhlo.
I didn’t watch the stream for the second bracket, but when I switched for the finale and saw what the match-up would be I thought “nooooo…. this might end really bad”
I totally agree with Bhawb and Kravick here. As a necro mesmers are the hardest class to play. If there’s a full team of them who also know they will be encountereing necros only, then there’s just very little you can do :/
@MightyTroll: I’m not saying that mesmers are op. I definitely disagree that they (or thieves) are “unbeatable if played correctly”.
Sometimes matching classes against each other creates a rock-paper-scissor effect.
Not only is this most prevalent in mesmer vs necro fights but gets amplified once there’s a whole team of mesmers who knows they’re up against necros.
I really wish I can get more involved with this. But I am spending most of my free time to keep Kaineng in tier 3 right now.
Maybe later.

I’m willing to say that Mesmers, Thieves, and Necromancers have the tools to be OP. It simply depends on the skillcap of each class as to how far you can make them OP. Necromancer has an incredibly high learning curve to become truly OP, often requiring inhuman skill to reach it. Mesmers and Thieves are easier to come close to that OP margin. They have all of the tools to dominate everyone.
Anyone watch Mesmers vs Necros? It was painful : ( The average Mesmer rank was twice as high as the Necro players rank.

I think Necro is very good, just that some classes are flat out better equipped for team play. We need more abilities for removing conditions for our teammates. Dagger 4 Deathly Swarm for example. Why can’t this cure conditions on allies as well as transfer to enemies? Why is the projectile so kitten slow? Plague form is borderline silly. You get condition kited all day against decent players. I agree Necro has a high learning curve, and I’m much better now at rank 30 then I was at rank 20.
You guys def need to tune in to see us next month, ill be randomly hosting practices for some of our more active necros and an gonna see if I can’t get Altroll in for some coaching. We definitely got our names out there and we redeemed the Thursday performance. Mesmers were definitely a hard counter for us and less experienced players. I definately believe we could win it with practice but we will need at least another necro with my semi-mobility and diligence on locking down and destroying called targets.
I re-watched the footage I took of the Mesmer fights. I think what was really needed was for us to all go burst builds (of varying tankiness). I saw multiple times where a target was called and someone would blow a lot of their abilities to get them very low, but then no one else was focusing them and they got away. Obviously the coordination required was pretty high, but still doable.
I think the main problem that we are always going to face is that somehow its balanced for Flesh Wurm’s teleport to be limited to 1200 range (and have very strange limits), whereas they can portal across the entire map, neut our home point, then port back to wherever they were fighting. Oh, and did I mention you can’t kill their portal like ours can be killed? (Anet, buff Flesh Wurm’s tele!) That is going to kill us no matter what.

Sigh, between watching this tournament and lots of theorycrafting lately on Necro, Its pretty easy to see how some classes (*cough*mesmers*cough*) Can counter so much that is thrown at them while having a lot of getaways. Sure, they dont have easy access to Swiftness, but there are runes for that. Anet really should watch a few of these (sepecifically the Necro vs Mesmer ones) and take note of a few things.

I said this once before, Necros dont really have a learning curve, its a nice meadow (utility skills all got high base strength and wells got viable damage, minion bombing solos pve to level 60) that then hits a vertical mountain when it comes to cooldown rotations/ds use.
Thieves got the “op” potential if you get 15 points into Trickery (i think thats the last trait tree with the +3 initiative, correct me if im wrong since im too lazy to look it up) because its like giving necros 5 seconds off every cooldown each time we go into ds, opening up so many crazy things. Mesmers plain are on the border of op anyway (distortion, temporal, phase retreat/aka 3/4 of a stunbreak on a weapon and Blurred frenzy), but their specializations are easy to swap into a crippling overspecialization unless they run mantras.
