I’m going to buy Heart of Thorns, and my goal now is to level a new Necro from scratch and enjoy the Reaper as soon as possible.

I enjoy leveling, so I’m not in a hurry. Just want to be able to unlock Reaper before finishing the leveling content (for example, Maguuma Jungle), so that I can actually enjoy some world map content as Reaper.

So guys, how unlocking elite specs actually works?
Can I save as many hero points as possible before reaching lvl 80, and then spend everything on Reaper?
Can I unlock at least the new shroud as soon as lvl 80, and then slowly start acquiring the traits/shouts?

You need to unlock every other traitline before you can put points into reaper.

So, from leveling 1-80, you earn enough hero points to unlock all core skills and traits, regardless of your other actions. Hero point challenges in the world are in addition to this. As such, any hero points you earn from challenges are really only for unlocking elite specializations. Once you hit level 80 and have unlocked all of the core profession, you can start spending hero points on the elite specs.

All of the Core Tyria HPs aren’t enough to fully unlock elite spec. So, in your place, I’d just power-level to 80, and then go right into HoT to score some of its sweet 10 HPs challenges. After that, get back to exploring )

WvW gives you a currency which you can trade with a vendor there to give you either +1 or +10 skill points. This will comeplete the skill point from the overworld and you won’t have to do it, useful on maybe your second character. I think everyone would recommend taking your time as you said and just leveling as you do by roaming around comepleting events.

You must complete the core class traitlines and unlock all skills before being able to invest into the elite specialisation. There are Hero Point trains that run sometimes, (Check Reddit) which can unlock reaper for you by running through the maguuma jungle very efficiently.

Go and spend a little time in Edge of the Mists. (hit B to join). Each WvW rank will get you 6 to 9 hero points (and a book worth full level of xp). You do not get these until you are 5th level in WvW.

Takes little time and the rewards for the first 5 wvw levels is wvw xp bonuses, so goes really fast.

So about level 10-12 WvW you have 30+ extra hero points so you can unlock Reaper faster. Save the xp books for an alt if you want to just level slower.

Play pvp, get tomes, easy level 80.
