Soul Reaping Always
Builds without soulreaping are quite problematic, as it its the only tree that gives us both survivability (vital persistance or foot in the grave) and damage (unyieliding blast or death perception) along with a bunch of utility to make up noticeably better overall.
Taking a break from GW2 to play various
Nintendo games..
Its not necessary in PvE. If you are using the dagger build it literally only provides two things. Strength of Undeath and traited Lich. So depending on your groups optimisation you may end up dropping it for curses/blood. Spite is the mandatory line for PvE though.
Reaper maybe going Spite/Blood Magic/Reaper can drop it I guess? We’ll find out eventually but I was thinking earlier about dropping DR or BM when the expansion drops.
Though yeah not current in the future.
Honestly, they should probably fold a lot of traits into other trees and make other lackluster or needed ones (like Dhuumfire and FotG) baseline. Our traits seem to be a cluttered mess.
Soul Reaping train line is used for (almost)every build.

CondiMM? i take it i over curses and spite.
DP,SM/Last gasp/ VP/DP can’t live without you.
Not complaining, but is there anyone out there who doesn’t use SR? cause i want to internet fight you.
Was just thinking the same thing and on my way to gw2 build editor to try and come up with a build that does not use soul reaping. For me personally that would basicaly mean a build that does not use staff and our other weaponskills are sadly lackluster to compete with staffs utility.
Soul marks alone is extremely huge with making marks unblockable and then adding LF on top of it. Then you add vital persistence and death perception or foot in the grave and it’s almost always too freaking good to pass up.
Current soul reaping is like pre dhuumfire 10 points into death magic for greater marks but this time it’s a whole trait line lol.

I tried a condi necro build for pvp with spite/curses/blood and it was the most horrible thing I’ve played in a while. I thought unholy martyt would give me tons of sustain.. and it did until I drew immobolize and 12 stacks of burning..

My condi necro used that set up but instead of US I used Vampiric Rituals even if I have only WoP as a well, fresh post patch it was fine until the exploitable weaknesses came in seeing that dhuumfire wasn’t useful on condi I just went cele and I have no intention to switch back.
The Dhuumfire thread
I don’t use SR, but am making tacos and not interested in an ‘internet fight’. :p I’d be OK with a conversation about why I prefer it though.
SR isn’t a prerequisite for using staff at all BTW. O.o

Really? I dont think they are as bad as they used to be. Yes there are traits that need a rework but atleast all our traitlines have some use.

Yeah was only thinking of PVP (I should of said that),
Very true, if i was PVEing I dont see Soul reaping being vital.

If your talking about PVP, why do you prefer another trait line?

Personally, I take SR/DM/BM. I run a well-tank type build currently and it works wonderfully. Power is decent at ~2500 and having a sigil of force as well as the SR trait that gives you 5% more damage about 50% life force work well, then I have bloodlust sigils and the DM trait for more power from toughness. As well as Corrupter’s Fervor. So I have a lot of power potentially (can get up to about 3100) and have 54% crit chance in DS, which is adequate.
I’ve always liked durable builds, and SR with VP and SM is brilliant for that. And Death Magic also helps, making DS really tough to burn down against single targets or two enemies, depending on class and build. That being said, I’m likely going to drop Blood for Reaper, so i have all the tankiness I need. I’ll also more than likely work with the shouts, because hopefully the GS will do enough damage to balance the lack of it in shouts. If that fails… Back to well-bomber lol
I use DM/BM/Spite for my minion master build. I honestly don’t get CC chained that much with proper kiting and dodges.
-DM gives me durability (protection, corruptor’s fervor, necromantic corruption)
-BM gives me sustain (vampiric, unholy martyr Life force battery)
-Spite gives me damage and boon removal (lots of retaliation and boon corruption/removal)
I’ll probably drop spite for reaper when it releases. Reaper will give access to stability through reaper shroud, so soul reaping won’t be necessary for everyone wanting stability.
S/I/F engineer Z/R/D guard
i actually dropped it out for my spvp well last night. DM/Spite/BM.
The only reason i play SR usually is for the LB pierce, and i realized that just wasn’t really all that useful in pvp…
I actually don’t use SR on my Minionmancer. Spite/Blood/Death <3 I sPvP successfully, I PvE successfully, and I WvW moderately well.

Soul Reaping will be necessary for Reaper Shroud uptime, though…
