Staff #1 can't attack binding roots?
The real question is, what is obstructing staff 1? The only thing between you and the roots is, nothing? Unless you have dagger equip, you’re pretty much screwed or you can hope DS 4 in a power build can sometimes do the job.

Necro staff and lich projectiles spawn outside of the players body (110~150 range) they dont hit anything whos entire hitbox is inside your model.

if this is correct then that needs to be fixed asap.
Just to be clear, many of the roots I tested this on, I wasn’t in/on at the time.
Why exactly do you need to attack them? You have DS… just find anything close by and use DS2…. or heck… use any condition removal followed by a dodge. Breaking those roots in most cases is a waste of time unless your playing cookie cutter classes that just spam aoe and cleaves then they break on their own while you are facerolling.
The thing is specifically created in such a way that it can, with attacks that actually work properly, be countered by killing it. Regardless of whether you’re happy to use other skills to clear it or not, or ever attack one someone else is standing in or not, this isn’t working properly.
Also: LOL @ ‘cookie cutter classes that just spam aoe and cleaves’. Apparently having your auto-attack enabled on several class/weapon combinations is considered ‘cookie cutter’ now…
This has been a problem for a while. Its not just an issue of the projectile spawning outside your body, but also where the projectiles are aimed, and the hitbox of similar objects. Basically, for whatever reason (and this occurs in multiple classes with different weapons), your attacks are aimed in such a way that they overshoot the target. You’ll notice the burrows in AC as an example, and some other structures that are low to the ground.
Its annoying, most people have just learned to work around it, and while it is great to bring it up to the devs just to remind them, frankly I don’t see this being a high priority fix right now.
Without knowing whether it’s actually difficult to fix or not, I don’t really rate it one way or another. I am however beginning to get the impression that for whatever reason they find out about a lot fewer bugs than what tends to be considered common knowledge and widely reported.

Welcome to “you have no cleave airlines… please fasten your seat belts in up right position”.
Note not welcome to any other class where every second weapon cleaves and you can continue attacking your target and break vines. Or was that still too hard to understand?
I also have a lot of trouble with scepter hitting stuff like roots. Would have to resort to grasping to even touch the roots.
I can’t hit them with axe 1 or 2 most of the time either, not the ones on myself anyway. But they make for excellent axe 3 retaliation juice ups and DS 4 usually makes short work of them. I’ve honestly never had them on me and thought: I’m going to die from this. They are just an annoyance more than anything.

BTW another reason why i love hydromancy sigils, their damage component instantly breaks the roots most of the time.

I was laughing at the implication that cleave-heavy professions are ‘cookie cutter classes’ and ‘spam’ their attacks (many of which are autos, hence ‘having your auto-attack enabled’ et cetera), because I find it hilariously pretentious. Was there something I didn’t understand?

I can’t think of a time I’ve died due to it being there, but it’s irritating if you’ve got minions, NPCs, or allies* stuck in it and when you go to free them it turns out you have to waste swap, DS, etc. solely because of a bug/oversight with certain weapons.
*I don’t even ask, just randoms in PvE and rarely WvW.

Having the minions rooted and not frolicking through massive aoe isn’t always a bad thing ;-) But as for the other players, I’ll help em if I can, but it’s not my 100% responsibility to get them out of roots. Like I said though, it’s an awesome way to juice up retal on the axe if say, the ranger has you pushed back and you don’t really have any targets nearby to get a reasonable duration off it. I’ve actually killed more than 1 ranger that way. Just retal’d off their roots, healed up, popped DS to get more retal, watched them tear their HP to shreds. It was awesome.

Its extremely annoying. I am getting maybe a 50% hit rate (likely lower) with Lich projectiles in wvw. They move so slow a person just has to be moving for it to miss. I dont have this problem with staff to near the same degree.

The roots are certainly an annoyance. Frankly the way that they apply immob every second for 20s is dumb. If a Necro’s 20s Stability can be stripped or stolen with a single skill, then that 20s immob and all the bleeds should be transferrable/cleansable with a single skill…. but I digress.
Dagger can burn through the roots quick enough, but it is the only auto on a weapon skill for the profession that is suitable for the purpose. If you don’t have an MH dagger, then you are most likely going to have to burn a cleanse+dodge, shroud (#4 or #2) or a swap to break out if you are in a hurry. It is annoying, but not the end of the world.
It’s annoying AS HELL! It rarely happens now as I have better foot work ;P but in the early days in swamp fractal, that thing almost killed me.
Has anyone submitted a /bug report for this?
