So I really enjoy staff marks/wells on my necro, but the traits for them are all over the map. Is there an optimal build that utilizes both staff marks and wells? For pve? For pvp? I may use my necro for both, I haven’t decided yet.

<— largely a necro noob, please assist!

I like wells too so i’d like to help though im not sure what exactly you are looking for. wells and staff can work together the only downside is choosing if you want ritual of protection over staff mastery

You can use staff in almost any build really, but if you’re trying to trait entirely for both it might cause some conflicts.

Staff and wells are both mostly utility so you still have to decide what kind of role you want your build; conditions, power, bunker

I use a power build that can bunker and support and is pretty strong in hotjoins for spvp so if thats what you’re interested in let me know.

Staff is more of a pvp weapon used for soft cc and hard cc, but it shines in WwW in pvp. You shouldn’t use staff in pve, so i’d advise you to keep your necro for pvp. In large scale www, zergs and such, necros play well bomb for boonstrip and good aoe damage, i don’t know the exact build since necro is probably the class i know the less. In small scale, staff is a good condi weapon for a scepter/ dagger staff condi necro, with dumbfire, iirc traits are 6/6/0/2/0; and a good power weapon for builds like daggershroud ( type leeto on youtube). Staff as a main weapon isn’t that great, it’s more of an utility weapon who needs another set to shine.

If you’re on EU and need help to get into dungeons, pm me.

@ TheDevice.2751 – Oooh, that sounds good! I feel so out of the loop with necro I actually am not entirely sure – just that I love the idea of tons and tons of death-by-aoe. That and my necro is pretty and I got a Teq ascended staff for her…. <3

Would you mind sharing your build?

Ooooh, okay. That’s a little sad staff isn’t great in pve but I can see why.

… I kinda love the idea of covering the ground in marks/wells and watching some poor player get feared from one into the others… >_>

Well, ( ahah, well, i’m so funny) you can use staff for open world because no one minds, but it’s just not that great of a weapon for dungeons. You could adapt a meta build to include a staff but i fear ( ahah, fear, i.. ok i’ll stop) you won’t put it to use much.

Ascii’s wellmancer build is IMO one of the most balanced builds I’ve ever seen and contains what you want while being extremely tanky.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/necromancer/Ascii-s-WvW-Wellomancer-Build/2499132

Although since the build was posted, the ferocity nerf may have weakened a bit, but the general trait spread and utility selection is still sound. The main purpose of it is for wvw, but it can be used in general zergy content, with the exception of world bosses that cannot be crit— though even in cases like Teq you may just go on turret defense duty and be highly useful.

And yea don’t use staff in dungeons. It is no good considering the mechanics of them.

For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards,
for there you have been and there you will long to return.

the only downside is choosing if you want ritual of protection over staff mastery

Easy: Staff Mastery.

Well, ( ahah, well, i’m so funny) you can use staff for open world because no one minds, but it’s just not that great of a weapon for dungeons.

This is true. Then again, if you want to be king of dungeon runs you shouldn’t play necro at all.

Maybe take a look at this.
Most people use the staff because it has great utility regardless of their build. However, most of it’s damage comes from conditions. Similar things could be said about wells, most people use them, but either they mostly do direct damage (Suffering, Corruption) or they don’t do any damage at all (Darkness, Power).
So when you make a build combining both staff and wells you’ll obviously have to compromise. There are two approaches to this:
1. WvW zergs. In this case people usually want to do ranged direct damage. That means a power build with both damaging wells + Focused Rituals and something that would include Unyielding Blast and Death Perception. It’s a build that focuses on dealing more damage when in Death Shroud rather than using the staff itself.
2. The staff is supposed to be the hero of your build. In this case you want to go hybrid with carrion gear and either berserker/rampager or soldier/dire, depending on how tanky you want to be. This allows you to fill the time between mark cooldowns with utility skills (like wells) and DS skills without losing out on too much damage.

If you want to run marks and wells, the bare minimum, IMO, requires 4 points in both death magic and blood magic pushing you toward a tank build. Focused rituals will let you target the wells with points in curses, if needed. Everything left over from remaining trait points, if you do not need to aim the wells, to gear should be berserker to compensate.

This is the core of a WvW well-bomber build. It is a rear-line build that is very powerful, though it may not feel like it.

You can run maxed staff in PvE for tag-and-bag events but wells will only be good in NPC escorts. Some dungeons may favor wells at certain points, mostly for WoP.
