Staff auto to melee Scythe...Stop it....
Ds already is the long ranged power damage attack and you know that there is this thing called a conditional trigger, thus just how theif skills swap around when in stealth and eles with attunement swaps, a necro staff swapping to a melee cleave while in melee range would remove a weapon requirement for the next expansion or so on.
What about this, make the auto attack kind of like the mesmers, except instead of increasing damage at further range, make it so that the scythe does a cleaving melee attack when the target is in melee range.
This way we could keep our long range attack, and gain a cleaving melee attack (something necro really lacks), and then we can all feel like Reapers of death!

Thats kinda exactly what i wrote.
I don’t think we need a cleave auto attack. Not that I would mind one, but it doesn’t seem to be what they envision the necro as. What I would really like to see is a weapon with PBAoE control using cripple/chill/fear/weakness. I could see them doing this in a future expansion, where they add a few weapons to every class, keeping the overall weapon balance (warriors with tons of weapon choices, elementalists/engis with half a handful), and giving people a few new, yet balanced, choices.
Just stop with the Scythe idea, it doesn’t make sense to have a scythe when staves are already using scythe skins and have scythe on auto, and it doesn’t make sense for our long range support/utility weapon to have a melee cleave.
They should replace axe with a scythe. Same skills different skin.

If you seriously want melee then dagger auto attack chain is the strongest auto attack combo out of all the professions.
It’s actually not….
Does less DPS than even Rangers Greatsword (Which is known for it’s lack of damage, their Sword does 50% more DPS than it) and doesn’t even cleave. The only benefit is that it’s stronger than any other Necro weapon (Also DS, unless hitting multiples with piercing DS)

My wishlist for necro is a weapon that cleaves, 1 utility that has stability or invulnerability, and some sort of way of gaining vigor, maybe turn the flesh wurm into an initial blink, the way it is now it’s too unreliable.

I would like if staff 1 skill is like Reaper’s Touch. Much better animation than flying hand.
Zogyark hits the big flaws for the necro right of the head.
Necro is only profession without a invulnerability skill if I’m right. And Yeah our only stability is going 30 points in a tree that is iffy at best with usefulness.
Maybe a reworking of dagger/axe could make necro’s melee better but I don’t know. When playing a dagger necromancer it doesn’t feel very satisfying to play really compared to other professions melee skills.

Blinking to a location and creating the flesh worm would be pretty awesome, possibly OP though.

Don’t see why, most classes have blink except warrior and they are instant. Only change it so when you destroy it you don’t teleport back to it if that’s the problem.

Here here… stability please!! We get stability in lich form, but that is just not an option really. I am not going to waste my lich form just to gain stability during a fight… I need to save it for when I have 15+ stacks of Might and want to get some quick nukes going on or something.
As for the scythe cleaving/melee… no. For us powermancers, it is our only long range weapon available. We don’t need another melee weapon. I actually wouldn’t mind them adding in another mid range weapon that we could use, or even another long range one.

It doesn’t appear to be the strongest, although it appears to be second only to Warrior’s Axe in base damage (ignoring any secondary condition damage). Full cleaves, scaling, and trait builds may alter the end numbers, but the Dagger’s base damage is quite high. Much, much higher (almost twice that) of either Ranger sword.

If you have some information that I’m not aware of that backs up your claim, I’d love to see it. Also, I just want to make sure you understand that DPS and damage are not the same thing. I realize it may be splitting hairs, but when discussing relative power of weapons it is an important distinction to keep imo.
For the rest of the discussion, Axe is probably the weapon best suited to cleave; it would greatly enhance the auto attack (perhaps it should be given a chain of its own, where the 2nd and 3rd hits cleave). Staff is already relatively strong and has a ton of AE on it already, if you add any more on its auto attack, why would folks ever choose a different weapon?

That is actually not a bad idea… the biggest complaint with axe is the auto attack. It lacks any chain, lacks decent damage, and applies vulnerability slowly. The only real bite axe has is #2. I am always swapping weapons when it is on cooldown and using dagger auto attack instead.
The recent buff to #2 helped it a lot, but there is still a lot of room to improve on it. Much better weapon choice for a cleave than staff.
And it doesn’t make sense for our long range support/utility weapon to have a melee cleave.
Our strongest instant burst is on that long ranged utility weapon. Look for example the Ranger longbow, it will always give out lower dps than the shortbow, its used mostly for the zone control utility and cc, but if you can sit there and snipe with 1500 range shots, it gets to dish out quite the damage, (now for a bit of bias based on my meleeish tanky build) now imagine how much life force we could pull off if we had a cleave that gives 3% LF pre enemy every second (thus 3/4 cast time).
The simplest solution that I can see, since axe autoattack is relatively weak currently, would be to have the axe 1 apply to a small AoE around the target (possibly the 2 as well?). This would require the least amount of effort to change compared to most of the other suggestions here, would give us a nice cleaving weapon, and would bring the axe up to a reasonable strength.
Also, I just want to make sure you understand that DPS and damage are not the same thing. I realize it may be splitting hairs, but when discussing relative power of weapons it is an important distinction to keep imo.
Precisely.
Although Necro’s dagger does pretty high Damage per hit, it’s rather slow in it’s attack speed. I’ll run some numbers for full zerker gear with 30 in power/crit damage (Ignoring the extra crit chance a Ranger would have due to Precision and Crit damage in the same tree) and also some Crit damage food + Sharpening stone:
Damage calculation = (Average weapon damage * Power * (Skill coefficient * (Crit coefficient * crit chance)) / Armor) / Attack Speed
Stats = 2400 Power, 50% crit chance, 118% critical damage.
Necro dagger #1:
953 * 2400 * (0.6 * 1.34) / 1800 = 1021
953 * 2400 * (0.4 * 1.34) / 1800 = 681
953 * 2400 * (0.8 * 1.34) / 1800 = 1362
That’s a total of 3064 damage in a chain, but it takes 2 seconds to complete the chain so 1532 DPS
Ranger Greatsword #1:
1048 * 2400 * (0.34 * 1.34) / 1800 = 636
1048 * 2400 * (0.34 * 1.34) / 1800 = 636
1048 * 2400 * (0.39 * 1.34) / 1800 = 730
That’s a total of 2002 but it takes 0.8 seconds to complete a chain so that’s 2502 DPS
Ranger Sword #1:
953 * 2400 * (0.4 * 1.34) / 1800 = 681
953 * 2400 * (0.4 * 1.34) / 1800 = 681
953 * 2400 * (0.47 * 1.34) / 1800 = 800
That’s a total of 2162 but it takes 0.6 seconds to complete a chain so that’s 3603 DPS
So while Necro’s hit pretty hard with their hits, they hit so slowly that it hampers their DPS (Not to mention the extra 200% DPS the Ranger weapons would get if they cleaved onto extra targets)

Leave it alone. If you want to fix something then get rid of the stupid “scythe” graphic that the staff makes when using the skill. You want scythe’s in the game then put them in the game. The graphic looks dumb.
I agree staff shouldn’t be melee, but I think we do need a cleaving weapon, Axe makes the most sense and the animation is already there + it would put it on par with the rest of the weapons. people feel forced to take staff on power builds because of the lack of cleave in our melee weapons.

Seriously sick of seeing some post saying we should change staff auto attack to a melee scythe attack. Seriously stop this bs.
What Necros don’t need is another melee crap. Instead we need better range dps for crying out loud. If you seriously want melee then dagger auto attack chain is the strongest auto attack combo out of all the professions. If your so bored with staff don’t use it fricken scythe freaks. This is not dante’s inferno where you can kick kitten with a scythe through hell and back.
If your unsatisfied with staff auto attack then just think of it as the only unsatisfying thing about the staff. The utilities on it are great. The range on staff auto attack is favorable even if its accuracy is not reliable. Seriously stop revolving only around the staffs auto attack and make use of the Necromancers other capabilities. So, your not constantly bored with staff auto attack.
Another thing how the hell would you be satisfied with staff auto attack turning into a melee scythe? It would just be a redundant combo or one hit move. If it was turned that way the way we are now how the heck can you do anything when range is your best option? Death shroud? Yeah a deteriorating death shroud as your only long range dps option good job imbeciles. Stop dreaming and start working with what we currently have.
I suggest you enroll in some anger management classes, your post is very angry.
However, to the topic, I do agree that we shouldn’t REPLACE the staff with a melee weapon. What I would like though is an actual scythe as a weapon for melee. If I can’t have this, please make the axe either cleave or bounce. Do that and I’ll be happy and that hole will be filled for the necros
