Talk of spiteful spirit
You are mistaken if you think that Retaliation is for tanky builds only and not an offensive boon. Quite the contrary actually, considering it scales with power.
The formula is: 198.45 + (0.075 x Power).
A might-stacking power build could easily reach 3k power. That means reataliation does 420+ damage per attack. If you get hit by one of those dmg (x8) skills: ~3,5k damage… just from a boon. Not too shabby.
Also there is no aoe limit to this.
Now, I don’t run a power build but I still have 2k power in PvE/WvW. And I’m certainly not the only one who wouldn’t want to see this trait lose retaliation.
If you don’t like it for PvE (understandably) then you are free to just not pick this trait.
I don’t know how barbs from gw1 works (since I didn’t play it…) but if it’s a good idea for the Spite line then it could replace much worse traits like Signet Power, Siphoned Power or Death into Life.
You mean 3k attack because 3k power is a bit of a stretch… I run a full power based build and have 2.4k power which translates to 3.2k attack…. Anyway retaliation isn’t a very offensive ability… Reflecting damage isn’t offensive that’s defensive because YOU have to take damage before it even triggers… If it was a passive aura that damaged targets around you that would be offensive…. Just because it scales on power doesn’t make it offensive.
Retaliation isn’t defensive because it doesn’t defend. At all.
Anyway, it is true that spiteful spirit is somewhat useless in PVE. I have found that most retaliation is useless in PVE. Much like confusion, the enemies have high damaging but infrequent attacks, an this makes it so retaliation does barely anything.
The trait is fine, though. Because in tPVP and WvW it is incredibly boss. It increases the offensive potential of Death Shroud quite a bit, especially when Death Shroud is used defensively against damage spikes.
Defensive abilities are those that do not trigger unless attacked or those that help to prevent damage…
Offensive abilities deal damage when used. Thorns in any game is considered a defensive stat do you know why ? It’s because it requires you to be hit. Just because it triggers damage doesn’t mean it’s offensive.
It is in the direct damage tree, and retaliation scales off your direct damage; it is in the tree it synergizes best with. It is a good trait as is (we have laughably easy access to retaliation already), although it could be made more fun.
