You left out the easiest and highest chill ability we have in spectral grasp. traited it chills for 12 second with runes and spite it chills for almost 24 seconds.

I have been using power / condition hybrid build as of late in tournament solo pvp. They have shorter damage ramp uptimes than power builds atm, although they are more combo intensive and require more chaining.

I use a poison/bleed build and a chill/bleed build.

my chill/bleed goes like this:

this build allows me to easily hover between 10-15 stacks of bleed in 9-12 second windows, and 30+ seconds of chill permanently. anymore leans on chills is excessive given the short cooldowns on our chill moves are.

I would also strongly suggest switching the rune of chill out for a 5% damage or 5% crit rune. on crit runes being mixed with on swap runes have always been a disaster due to the fact that they lock each other out. Hydromancy will always beat out rune of chill due to it’s consistency, duration, and lower cd (9 second per swap instead if 10 second per random crit). when the 10% frozen duration rune is fixed it may be beneficial to switch back as it may by 3-5 second of chill back in total after a full combo.

you will see most likely see more damage with juggling bleed/chill via dagger/dagger and specter/ focus than trying to juggle dagger/dagger and axe/focus with vulnerability/ chill because of the huge power investment you need to make the damage worthwhile and the longer damage amp.

Scorpion Wire – Batman’s zip-line thingie
Any shadow step ability – jumping on people
Any stealth skill – duh!!

(Yea, I’m not a Batman-fanatic, so all you who are, have away at it )

Only problem is that Freeze does nothing to Thief’s or Phantom Mesmers, and sadly that’s what most spvp games are filled with.

atrait spectral grasp and use it with spite and runes you will see it chills for almost 24 seconds. nothing in that post was theory crafted I assure you. you also avoid spectrals limitations by casting it close up either after an immobilize or a dark path. the bleeds are also very easy to reapply 10-15 at a time as long as you learn how to chain both weapon set together every 9 seconds. That 1k-1500 dps unmitgated dps a second

  • if nothing else chill will greatly decrease a mesmer/thief’s ability to heal and use utilities to reset a fight

I made a video showing the lockout I just made 5mins ago here:

as you can see every time I crit a chill sigil my hydromancy doesn’t work. I can’t make it more simple than that. After testing my spectral grasp depending on how fast you mouse over it comes to 22 second ( so almost 24). I didn’t think i would have to actually log on to prove these things spectral is easy enough to test without me having to put a video on it. I grow tired of trying to prove this so I’ll just leave with this I have been dabbling with chill, power, condition etc builds for quite sometime though. I thought to give advice and and show you what works for me because every build i do post has won atleast 1 tourney gold and has been able to get me to silver consistently (some build performing better than others) while being a tourney solo pug player. I wish you luck on forming your chill build

First I want to say thank you for the time you’ve put into this. Its been a refreshing post for us Necro-Newbs who are here looking for new and exciting things to break the mold.

Question: what are the primary stats on your armour?
Question: are you using any particular exotic set?
Question: does the bulk of my melee damage come from the Power/Precision stats?

I have tried an Axe/Dagger with swap to Axe/Dagger but the cool downs sucked. (wishful thinking) Now I’m swapping to Axe/Horn in WVW for speed boost.

Question: Should that second swap be a dagger/horn?

You know I tried this out, and only really had moderate success with it, All my efforts keeping chill up on them where nifty but it really decreased the damage output.

However I just went ahead and changed up the traits and the utilities a bit to run a full on MM that keeps up the perma chill, and I’ve got to say it works exceptionally well. The chill slows the guy enough so when the pets stop to attack, the attacks land and the shadow fiends ability to teleport to target and blind (which chills) is also nice.

I’m kinda digging it. Don’t get me wrong there are still massive issues with the pet AI and in big melee’s your pets just kinda wander around but in tighter 2v2’s it’s mean.

Thx for the idea to get the ol wheels a crank’n.

This increase in duration to 9 seconds sounds like a bug. The duration increase to the other Spectral skills is tiny. Spectral armor goes from 6 to 8, for instance.

Indeed it is a bug – but it’s about time we had a bug which worked in our favour. What’d the ratio be? 120:1? Seems fair.

I’m actually REALLY enjoying this build in sPvP. I sort of tried a similar thing when they changed that curses trait to add 1s of chill, but I found it underwhelming so I stopped. However, this is a very well made build.

The one possible thing which I think needs a look is the use of on crit and on swap sigils; the cooldown from on crit stops on swap from happening. I also don’t think it’ll be much use in WvW unless it’s conditions focused; axe has a pitiful range and Epidemic with GD/EB/BiP/PS is by far the best way we have of keeping people off the walls.

On the other hand, in smaller engagements this really shines. Landing SG is very tricky, but it can be done – your target has to be standing on the lip of the wall and not behind it. Then it’ll work.

It’s easy to work out when you can use SG to pull someone off the wall – if you can see their feet, you can do it.

As far as im aware the add-ons for the Superior Runes of Sanvir are;

+25 Toughness
+20% Frozen Duration
+50 Toughness
-50% Frozen Duration

Just tested them and yea it doesn’t increase the duration of chill anymore, meaning the 4th add-on is indeed 50% less Chill duration taken.

Yeah I misread the rune, I thought I must be missing something because it seemed too obvious.

I really like this build and the theme it goes for, I just wish this build was more practical. Half of my opponents in spvp seem to be thieves and chills cooldown increase doesn’t effect them much since they use initiative rather than cooldowns for their moves.

So I’ve been idly mulling this build.

Given that Target the Weak doesn’t work, and the last 10 points in Curses are therefore questionable (you lose 4% crit and weakness on crit 12.5% of the time if you go only 20 points deep), perhaps it’s worth dropping a few points into another line?

I have tried and enjoyed 20 points in SR (the SA is great), but what about 20 points in Blood Magic? An extra 2khp (which is added to DS too), some healing and perhaps 50% life drain to synergise with daggers and either dagger cooldown reduction or well cooldown reduction?

Thoughts?

Wouldnt it be better to replace either rune of Ice or Sanctuary with Lyssa instead of Svanir? Having that extra 25 toughness is a bit better for EHP than 25 vitality especially with the change from Berserker to Knight.

I gotta be completely honest. I decided to go this build last night in very subpar gear and fully expected to get stomped in WvW and in PvE for a while until I amassed better equipment. I was pleasantly surprised that while clearly not as effective as a fully geared out player, it is still very playable (and most importantly, fun)!!!

Am trying it with 30 SR and 10 in Curses. Not sure if should pick Enfeebling Blood on shroud or Chilling Darkness; either way, I figure 30 points in SR is fine as I can permachill everyone I meet anyway, and I’ve tested Target the Weak and found it to be bugged.

Thoughts?

This seems like fun, definitely gonna try it! Only change I would make is use an axe in the offhand (for the life force gain and burst damage in skill 2, and so you can start damaging at range), and possibly replace Reaper’s Precision with Weakening Shroud or something as 1% on every third crit seems very little even with your high crit chance and attack speed!
I’ll probably try it your way first though since it’s tried and tested.

Ran this build last night changed up some of the sigils. Used axe/focus + dagger/dagger. Switched up some of the weapon sigils to lightning strike for a little more direct dmg which worked out quite well. Overall was a nice change of pace from the usual conditionmancer that I have been running in spvp lately.

Might i also point out daggers 3 skill (the immobilize) is killer, you land that on a target, weapon swap for chill and drop all 3 wells its game over for anyone. Theifs cant fight back cos of the blind, Mesmer clones die instantly, guardians boons are ripped out of em, rangers just melt.

Yep yep yep. I loved dropping dagger 3 and switching to my mainhand weapons (axe/focus) and let the hydromancy switch hit them , then pop the well bombs then followup with a spinal shiver into an axe 2 or 3 depending on how many people in the fight / hp of target. It does indeed melt peoples faces who stick around too long. Quite hilarious to use on thieves who try to sneak away only to see them pop up 2 seconds later at 1/3 their hp. GG and fun times.

My only gripe with the build is I wish there was a little more constant damage instead of combo setup spike. That’s just my thoughts after the one night with the build, perhaps I need a little more playtime with it.

Ascii what’s the reasoning behind taking Close to Death instead of Axe Training? Last time I tested it, Axe Training was around 30% or 40% damage increase, alongside the cooldown reduction. Given that the Axe is your primary damage output this would give you a substantial damage increase.

And since you run two wells, wouldn’t Focused Rituals provide more bang for the buck instead of Reaper’s Precision? Or Spectral Attunement, or even Master of Corruption were you to run with Epidemic or Blood is Power instead.

And last, what’s the reasoning behind running Berserker’s instead of say Valkyries which offers substantially more Toughness at the cost of some offense?

This sounded amazing so I went to test, it’s been changed I guess. Steady weapon with base power +30 in spite, axe1 hit for 21. Took axe mastery, increased to 22.

I myself can last quite well when 2v1’d the chill AoE from weapon swapping which can be done in death shroud makes kiting very easy and my version is quite tanky. Depending on your playstyle you can improve its damage or make it more tanky to suit your needs.

Quick note for everyone using this build outside of SPvP. Superior Runes of the Mad King provide +25 power and +10% condition duration for using 2. Runes of the Lyssa are the only other rune to provide +10% condition duration on second add-on. I would highly recommend changing your build to:

  • 2 Superior Runes of the Lyssa (+25 Precision, +10% Condition Duration)
  • 2 Superior Runes of the Mad King (+25 Power, +10% Condition Duration)
  • 2 Superior Runes of the Ice (+25 Vitality, +20% Frozen Duration)

Superior Sigils of Chilling’s +10% frozen duration has now been fixed and extends chill duration on both main hand and off-hand weapons. I will be updating this thread with a new full build version soon as ive finished my legendary weapons guide in the crafting section.

It’s funny, soon as i saw the first rune of the mad king linked in lions arch I thought to myself -Ascii is going to love this-

So are you going to run chilling runes on mainhand and hydro on offhand I’m guessing? Also have you gone back to test out a bleed/chill build? Might be a bit more possible with the sigils working now maybe?

What about switching out the 10 points in Soul Reaping for 10 points in Death Magic, and taking Rituals of Protection? 3 seconds of Protection on well cast should benefit this build since it uses 3 wells.

For WvW, I’d switch out Reaper’s Precision for Banshee’s Wail, and swap out one of the utility skills with Spectral Walk…necros get 100% swiftness uptime that way.

Did anyone notice that the Major Sigil of Chilling gives +20% frozen duration while the Superior Sigil of Chilling gives +10% frozen duration instead.

Unfortunately last i checked the blind from plague form did not trigger the trait to chill, overwise yes it would be the elite to use. Flesh Golem itself is very good for disruption and lets you keep people in the necro bomb much longer.
