Alright so preface:

I bought the game the day of release. Played a few weeks and shelved it.

A few days ago, for whatever reason I installed GW2 and started playing again. I left off in the early level 20’s. I grinded nothing but EOTM from level 20-80 and I know absolutely nothing about the game.

I’m looking for the most general WvW / EOTM build. I want to be able to help while in a group but be able to hold my own in a one on one.

What are the most meta / cookie cuter / generic builds, and gear recomendations for:

Power
Condition Mancer
Well mancer

I want to try out the top few cookie builds to figure out what play style I like.

Well
1. There’s not a definitive answer to that question, there’s a huge amount of variation with power builds and less variation but still some for condition builds. And it depends on your goal. For pve check out spoj’s guide, as it will detail everything you need to know to contribute as a necromancer in pve. Condition builds are only good in small scale wvw and pvp and typically there are mainly builds with dhummfire or without dhummfire (a trait that let’s us burn enemies). Power builds typically use axe or dagger based on the situation and there’s a huge variation in traits for them, but I typically always take 6 in soul reaping for my power builds for death perception and to make death shroud much stronger.

2. The best gear in the game is ascended, and weapons and armor take a lot of time and money to make, so I’d recommend getting exotic weapons and armor before you delve into getting ascended. For using etom to level you should have tons of badges to get cheap exotic gear, but be careful with upgrades for those because you can’t salvage wvw or karma armor, meaning that the rune will be stuck there. For ascended trinkets, there are a few things you should know. Amulets can only be bought using laurels, but you can save 10 laurels by getting them in wvw for an extra 250 badges. Rings can be obtained wither by laurels or by doing fractals of the mist at level 10 or higher. Fractals are a complex endgame dungeon with multiple levels that take a lot of skill and knowledge to succeed in, but it’s the easiest way to get rings and can also net you an ascended backpiece. The only issue is that one of the fractal bosses got overbuffed for lower levels, making it somewhat more of a pain. For ascended accessories, join a good guild and do guild missions with them and you can get one accessory for every 2 weeks. For ascended weapons and armor, which I don’t even have yet, yoy need to level up your crafting disciplines to 500 and collect bloodstone empireyal and dragonite through the games content, so for you you’d need to level tailoring weapon crafting artificer and maybe huntsman (for warhorn) to get ascended gear, which is the best gear and is very expensive.

Oh and feel free to whisper or mail me in game too, since it’s a complicated topic and it’s tough to understand from what I’ve written there.

3. This question is more openended. That depends on your goals and interests. I’d suggest joining a guild that matches your interests, whether that be wvw, pvp or pve, but typically you can do all of those in any guild. If you’re interested in good wvw you should join a wvw guild, and for the best of the best you’d want to go to a tier 2 server since those have the best fights between guilds, but if sieging (ppt) is your thing, lower tier servers are fine as well. What server are you on?

Anyway besides that you can try to get on the pvp leaderboards. You can do pve in all sorts of ways and experience all of that content once you have exotic gear. One endgame goal a lot of players have is making their character look really awesome by acquiring cool skins for armor and weapons that can be customized using the wardrobe fearure. One if the highest goals of a player is making a legendary weapon which is a huge time and gold sink but those skins usually have special effects and footprints and are equal in quality to ascended weapons but you can change their stats out of combat. Most legendaries are a little too bright or un fitting for necromancers other than frostfang the axe and howler the warhorn. I literally just made howler this week and I absolutely love it, and it was a great endgame goal for me, and now that it’s over I have more motivation to get the other best skins and best gear for my necro!

Thanks for the input. But I’m lost.

Is there a database of items I can look at because I don’t have the slightest clue what items exist / to aim for.

Go to the guild wars 2 wiki! That will give you info on anything you need.

I can’t link builds right now since I’m on my phone, but I can tomorrow if you still need help with that.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Dungeon

Gw2 has no raids but 2 open world bosses, tequaltl and the triple wurm require similar coordination but don’t take that much time and are accessible to all people that arrive early enough to get organized for them.

Alright. I’ve found out max stat gear can be purchased in home world of wvw from the armor merchant.

I just need to figure out a build I like.

I’m looking for the most general WvW / EOTM builds, focused more around solo play then group play. I would like to try the top POWER build and the top CONDITION build. As well what gear to use with it.

Builds in wvw tend to be complicated, so I’d suggest testing out builds you like in pvp first because you don’t have to buy gear, and stat customization is much simpler as it’s done through changing one amulet.

Like I said before I cannot link builds right now and there typically isn’t an objective best build for pvp based things (for Pve there is a clear best).

For condition I’d suggest looking at blackmoas guide which should be a few posts down here in the forums, it will explain everything you need to know better than I can.

I will say that condition is better for solo play in my opinion while power is much much better for group play as far as wvw goes.

Do you want to roam alone then looking for duels or do you want a build you can use while running with a large group? EotM is not even considered WvW at this point since there are no PvP or group/group battles. Actual WvW will require you to use a different build than running with the EotM karma train. Which weapons do you want to use and/or what is your preferred playstyle (melee or ranged)?

Well spoj has a guide that is stickied at the top of this sub-forum for a power necro. Also, here is Ascii’s wellomancer build thread:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/necromancer/Ascii-s-WvW-Wellomancer-Build/first

You can try those out. I personally don’t roam solo with my necro so can’t say what might work for that. You might be best served by trying some builds in PvP, since it’s free to use any stat armor and weapons there.

I can attest to the fact that spoj’s build is great for PvE and Ascii’s build is great for team play in WvW.

I just don’t know if you’re going to find a “one build suits all play styles” kind of build. You want different utilities and skills depending on whether you’re in a group or alone.

Just as a note, well builds aren’t really ideal for solo play since your enemies in a 1v1 can just walk out of the wells. But we’ll builds are the only reason yo bring a necro in wvw guild groups because they have such great AoE spike damage. I also dislike asciis build since target the weak and unholy power aren’t that great. Look for prophet’s gvg build on YouTube for wells, that’s the best well wvw build resource I know of.
