To level or not to level?
It’s not an amazingly hard class to play acceptably at 80, but I’d encourage you to just level for one reason: you will do the same content either way, when it comes to doing world completion.
So why not take advantage of it to just casually level up, and learn a bit along the way? Especially once you get to 50-ish, the enemies will start to show you some of what you will face when you step into HoT and the new living story, which is … more skill requiring.
I certainly found that coming from heroic ^W mystic raiding in WoW, HoT was still a bit of a learning curve, just because it’s different enough combat mechanics.

Thank you for your quick reply, you do make a valid point.
I’d recommend that you save that 80 boost for an alt and after you have some experience with the Hear of Thorns maps. They are pretty brutal areas already if you’re just used to the core Tyria maps.
Also, if you plan on raiding, you’ll need that boost for an alt when you come to the realization that no one likes you.
Hello all!
New player to the game here (not to MMOs, I don’t know why I’m specifying that but just so you know I guess)
My questions should be rather simple….
To level a necro or to simply boost it to 80? I still have my boost and did not use it on my other toon (mesmer for those wondering)
I’m not looking for a detailed answer, I am also aware that boosting does not necessarily help me understand the class and have the feel for it. It also does not help in terms of learning or understand all the skill and when to use them but I’m willing to take the time at max level to learn what needs to go where/when and how.
So answer away please!
Thank you in advance.
I agree with what the other say here:
You should work on learning your class and moves and enjoy the scenery. Also:By the time you hit 80, you will want most map locations when you join a guild so you can do guild tracks bounties and races, as bounties will take you all over the globe.
I’d recommend that you work on gear as well and get full exotics when you hit 80, as its extremely important in heart of thorns.Full yellow or even having greens simply isn’t going to cut it, as the content is very difficult.
Plus on top of that:You need to learn what skill does what so you can do fractals, because spamming buttons isn’t going to work.
The gear you would get with the boost is best used on a mule you do not intend to play much because its stat’s are bunkery.
If you decide to level, get either Signet of the Locust or Blood Magic’s Quickening Thirst for the 25% movement bonus. Then get minions and the first two minion traits in Death Magic. Minions make great training wheels. You can learn to play without them and which to use, when, as you become more proficient.
You will want two sets of equipment later; one for power and one for condition damage. I recommend power to start.
Necromancer and Mesmer play very differently.
Anchoku is right, but you can go for whatever you want.Personally:I’d go for power precision and vitality or power precision and expertise if your going to use the greatsword build.
Power is dmg
Precision for crit
Expertise increase of crit dmg or was it reverse?
The other side would be power condition and vitality. You would have more life and the power part raises the dmg.
Also remember that the runes you put on your armor are very important, as they increase the dmg of condi dmg and duration which is massively important.
Thanks for your time guys, I think I’ll go with the good old classic way and level up.
I appreciate the tips as well.
Save the boost for a Mesmer. Game play is so different after chrono that the lessons learned leveling may not even be valid From my understanding.
Necro is easy and a joy to level. I boosted a guardian and am leveling a Mesmer big mistake.
The posters above tips about run speed are valuable. I found dagger was my go to main hand weapon. I usually ended up with axe for ranged.
Once I got greatsword I fell in love with the class all over again. Feels so much more fluid than my guardian or the mesmer.
Ranger is even easier to level so do not waste the boost on that either.
it would make some sense to use the boost on the necro as it is one of the more easier classes, however it is also easy to level as a necro, thanks to your survivability.
