I’m always trying out new builds and I wanted to try out the new Superior runes of Tormenting. I have been using the Terrormancer for WvWvW which is doing fine 1 vs 1 and in a Zerg and the Hybrid for PvE( thanks Nemesis).

The Necro is REALLY good in a Zerg and ok in roaming as long as you don’t run into more than one opponent and avoid good thieves and hammertoting guardians or warriors.

So what about those Runes? The runes of Tormenting and Perplexity (the latter is a horrible thing of beauty on warriors but less useful for a Necro since we have few interrupts) are interesting for a Necromancer. They both add another condition that needs to be cleansed protecting your bleeds but I’ll focus on Torment. Torment punishes movement and is an AoE. Fear/Terror with torment is double the fun! The sixth rune that applies Torment stacks on heal has a nice synergy with our best heal consume conditions turning it into another condition applier.

It’s a fear build that sacrifices some fears like the fear when downed for better staff and spectral skills through mastery traits which translates into more frequent fears. It also means shorter cooldown on Torment with Path of midnight.

You have the Terrormancers utility but with shorter fear duration and hence less terror damage but you have higher torment duration and damage and the synergi is powerful. You also get slightly more frequent access to fears. Your heal gets offensive as well as condition clearing. You get faster marks. I’ve tried out greater marks instead of reapers protection for master trait in the Death path and either is fine. Reapers protection are better than greater marks in roaming while the reverse is true in Zergs.

Equipment is Cond/Tough/Prec
Rabid gear and accessories. Rune of Earth and Agony for your bread and butter bleeds.

Other utilities are spectral wall for dancing over as protection and for fear, corrupt boons for stability into fear conversion and the almighty epidemic. For roaming and while roaming Sign of the locust can be switched for epidemic or spectral wall. Elite is either Golem for roaming and knockdown or plague for Zerg warfare (also a nice source of stability).

Open with marks 3,5 and from range then switch to applying bleeds. Swap in and out of Death shroud to hit 5 and 3 in quick succession. Sometimes 2 to catch up and chill your prey.

Corrupt boons are situational for stability to convert into fear so first fear them with 5 on the staff and when they pop stability corrupt it (and laugh maniacally). Use your heal when you have accumulated conditions on yourself (if nothing else after casting epidemic) and close to your foes to apply torment. It plays like the Terrormancer but with more AoE.
