My biggest issue with the trait is that the best way to use it, a spectral build with a focus on staying in DS as much as possible, has also the worst synergy with healing power possible. The trait is, like so many others, a mechanic that ends up countering itself.
That said, I’d suggest you focusing on more of a spectral build if you want to build around it, with spectral traiting.

On paper, this build works a bit better. Clerics gives you more durability, but also at least some ability to actually hurt things. Banshee’s Wail and Locust Swarm let you sit in death shroud much longer than normally possible and the shorter spectral cooldowns nets you a bit more Protection uptime from the Wall and Armor (and more frequent stunbreaks). Using Dagger/Warhorn gives more reliable life force generation as well as another skill to return health.
I haven’t tried it in practice, though.

Mah Blood Reaper build is very fun (at least for me) and has a slight synergy with blood magic and death shroud. The only real downside is the learning curve for me but once i played it a bunch it got pretty interesting. Timing the skills is pretty important and I also use SoV on top of it so its really a mostly for fun build though I have won plenty of tpvp games with it.
Stacking immobilize after DS5/exit and then D3 – moving into SoV/BiP and just auto attacking can really dish out some crazy damage while keeping your hp pretty stable.
