Unholy Sanctuary Trait
I think you just need to get used to using it.

This, it will get you killed but more often it will save you. If you mistime it a couple times, but it saves you more than a couple times, that’s a net win.
Well i wouldnt call it awesome. It is decent but not good enough to carry deathmagic on its own. The healing part has really good healingpower scaling but terrible base healing, which makes it kinda lackluster in builds without healingpower. And healing power on necromancers is arguably the worst stat. Honestly due its scaling and bad base values it would probably better off in the bloodmagic traitline.
Well fixing deathmagic by reworking soul comprehension would actually a good start for this trait (and deathmagic in general). Then increasing its base value (even at the expense of its scaling) would further help it.

Thanks for this, but I’m not using it for the healing. I am using in zerg vs zerg as “oh —--” automatic switch to save my life. The massive damage spikes can instantly wipe me, but this trait allows me to survive much of the time (except in instances mentioned in my original post).
The trait isn’t carrying DM, imo.
DM also has Armored Shroud, which synergises nicely in the times I need Shroud, as does Shrouded Removal, Soul Comprehension, Beyond the Veil. The only thing preventing Reaper’s Protection from being awesome (synergising with Shivers of Dread in Reaper) is that huge 60s cooldown, so I toy with Deadly Strength instead.
I wonder if moving the trigger from 10% to 20% might help a little?

Well the “ohh kitten” automatic switch is what makes the trait decent not the healing (which is terrible).
But seriously do you think soul comprehension is good? In spvp it is useless. In pve and WvW it doesnt really matter since normally there is enough death going on to top you even without the trait. Also it doesnt do anything while in shroud since there is no lf gain though deaths in shroud (Otherwise it would actually be good atleast in WvW). Honestly that trait needs a rework.
Also I dont see how changing the lf prerequisite from 10% to 20% would help. Just to be sure that you understand US correctly, the trigger is always a lethal blow.
Unholy Sanctuary is a great trait if built around correctly. Personally, I use it with Zealot’s gear and when roaming, I know I frustrate the heck out of people because they have to “kill” me 3-5 times while I only have to kill them once.
It really is a “just get used to it” to solve the problem you are having, though. Once you do, you can start abusing the fact it ignores cooldown by using flashing traits.
What kind of a build do you use to make it work?

Spectrals with Dagger/Warhorn is the core of the build. Death Magic is Shrouded Removal, Deadly Strength/Reaper’s Protection (depending on enemies) and Unholy Sanctuary. Other than that, there is quite some variation. Soul Reaping is suggested, but honestly, not completely necessary. Either Vital Persistence or Spectral Attunement is quite acceptable.
Personally, I run it with Zealot’s gear and Grove runes.
It can work in PvP, but it is a very unique playstyle and not honestly the greatest. In PvP, use Mender’s Amulet. I still suggest Grove runes (that free immobilize and Protection is wonderful).
There is what I currently run, although there is plenty that can be adapted to personal preference.

Looks interesting! In practice, how quick are people to get out from the root effect?
It varies. Daredevils spend no time whatsoever rooted, but it usually buys me a couple seconds to reposition. I’ve had a few instances where they didn’t get rid of it at all, probably because they don’t like the idea of blowing a cleanse only on immobilize when facing a Necro. Of course, my build doesn’t apply much besides snare conditions, so the end result is that they often don’t cleanse anything.
