Q:

Ok, I’m having trouble figuring out which weapons work best with how I want to play. I want to do a Power build more so than conditions. I like having a little bit of range, but I’m not opposed to daggers if that’s what ends up working best. Probably going to have staff on switch with whatever else I take. Any help is greatly appreciated.

A:

You really should have a dagger mainhand. But your offhand could either be axe or staff.

i would love to wear a dagger in the main- and a staff in the offhand

I like to use WH with my dagger. Since u are up close anyway u might as well take advantage of the AoE dmg from WH 5.
I prefer this for open world activities (quests, events, WvW) mostly for the swiftness.

All off hands are good options though…

Dagger is more defensive with blind & condition transfer and weakness
and focus has nice vulnerability and regeneration on skill 4 and the attack will bounce on you since u ll be close to the target. Focus 5 has a very long cast time and i think it is very situational in most PvE content.

Offhand dagger is more of a condition weapon in pve, works well in pvp power builds though. Focus is kind of a must have for the vuln stacking but you can also take warhorn. I run dagger + warhorn and axe + focus. Dagger + focus works fine too if you want a staff on your second set.

I agree spoj

I just think that if u level solo dagger off hand has its uses if u want to have more defence when u need it (agaisnt veterans for example). I agree its not usefull in any group PvE content for a power necro.

And focus is great for vulnerability stacking, but i dont think its a must have while you level up solo. Amazing and a must have for veterans and above though.

I m just focusing a lot on “leveling solo” simply because i assume that skinnybb is still leveling up.
If this isnt the case, then u can forget all i said.

Yeah, still leveling and mainly solo. I occasionally have friends or guildmates join. I think I’ll try out d/wh and see how that goes. Thanks.

I go Dagger+Focus / Staff for my power build. The vulnerability from 4 really amps up your damage and #5 helps deal with kiting, plus ripping off boons is very satisfying.

That said, I can see a case for Warhorn or offhand dagger as well.

For Warhorn, it’s a point-blank weapon and you need to be in melee range anyway to use your awesome autoattack. The #4 is great in that it saves you from having to use your DS #2 or Sta kitten to break channels and the #5 arguably helps you stick to your target even better than Focus 5. If you’re passing on Signet of the Locust, the Warhorn is very possibly your ideal weapon.

Offhand dagger is mostly considered to be a condition weapon but it’s great for power builds too. The extra condition transfer is great, especially when you only have one or two conditions to deal with (it lets you save your Consume Conditions and Staff 4 for when you get hit with a bunch of them at once). Weakness is a severely underrated condition. It can seriously hurt your foe’s damage, which lets you sit in the danger zone much longer.

Long story short, I would consider Warhorn and Focus to be the more aggressive options and offhand Dagger the defensive option. Which you pick depends on your playstyle, which traits you’re taking, and the opponents you’re facing. Focus is pretty mediocre in most PvE, for example.

I main Ele and Necro, though I have an alt of each profession at level 80.
