Why don’t back items show in Reaper’s Shroud?

There are a lot of back items that would look really cool while in shroud, IE wings, but they just disappear! Why is that?

I imagine it has something to do with the Shroud skin overlay that it applies to your character. For comparison, similar recoloring effects (such as the Halloween refractors) don’t impact backpieces.

So, maybe anet disabled backpieces in Shroud to prevent the potentially ugly color-clash from happening?

Regardless, it’s still pretty sucky.

Do you play necromancer? Me too.

Shroud is a full transform not just an effect.

This is most noticeable when you are transformed like in thaumanova reactor fractal, urban battle ground fractal, or the last half of AC p3. If your race isn’t the same shape as the transformation you will see that in shroud you still transform to the shroud version of your original shape.

In this video if you pay attention the shape of the shroud it, is human like the character on the hero panel, not asura like the transform in the fractal.

Shroud is a transform, but that transform is achieved by applying an effect on your character as he looks under normal circumstances. In other words, the gear you are wearing does remain visible while you are in shroud. If you change leg armors, Reaper’s shroud will reflect that. RS isn’t just a standalone model that every human male (for example) morphs into either. Since RS reflects your leg armor, for example, this isn’t a good reason why it wouldn’t reflect back armor.

Warrior’s rampage is similar with changing your appearance if you are transformed while using your base appearance, it also drops the backpack when transformed.

idc about the other backpieces but i think it’d be really cool if Ad Infinitum/Ascension had unique animations for deathshroud and maybe for other class mechanics

From a technical standpoint, I think its because back items are often coupled with weapons. A lot of skills in this game through the years which hid weapons would also hide back items at the same time. Usually skills that involved throwing a weapon, like Ranger’s axe. Shroud hides weapons for obvious reasons, so it hides backpieces along with them.

As for why this particular issue hasn’t been fixed when others have been… I actually think Steelstick may be onto something. Weapons (and back items) aren’t effected by particle effect modifiers. Possibly due to the way weapons and back items are created and not having the appropriate channels (same reason they’ve said dyable weapons would require reworking the entire system). Shroud makes your entire model turn all shadowy. If backpieces weren’t hidden they may not be able to go shadowy due to this limitation, which would clash with the Shroud aesthetic.
