Is it just me that thinks having the Necromancer using sand in the new elite spec is rly weird?

Even consider that we are going to Elona, a sand themed place. It makes no sense to me.

Why would a Necro use Earth magic?

Like Necro and Mesmer is the only sand themed classes.
The Mesmer makes sense because of Mirages is pretty much illusions. But the Necro using sand magic makes no sense.

Please let me know what you think.
I can not be the only one thinking this is weird….

Convenience. Your sandshades are (probably) summoned spirits of the dead. There is plenty of sand in the desert. It’s a cheap and clean way to give them a “body” and allows them to interract with the world around them.

I can accept that they are spirits of the dead. I can even accept that thos spirits would need a body. But i cant understand the sand aspect of it. Even if there is a ton of sand in Elona that don´t change the rest of the world. Would it not fit better with something that has more to do with necromancy? Sand to me don´t sound or feel necromancy at all.

So everything is new things they have come up with for GW2 path of fire? Cus i don´t remember Palawa Joko ever using anything related to sand in GW1. Except him being a mummy and form Elona.
I´m sure Palawa Joko is more known for blood magic and undead summoning in GW1 then sand stuff.

They stated that the necromancer is rejecting Jokos method of necromancy in the desert and finding an alternate approach to the magic type given the surroundings.

Also one of the names Joko goes by is “Scourge of Vabbi”. So the naming and the theme is not a coincidence. Pretty much all the specs have something either desert related or tired to the region. Be in sand or Elonian lore.

The Desolation is full of toxic sand killing living organisms. The theme fits great to the scourge: using sulphuric sand to bring death and perdition upon the opponents.

The Mirage Elite NPC says that over time the sands of the desert accumulated a lot of magic and that the Mirage was sort of born out of that, so perhaps the Scourge is similar (with the anti-Palawa Joko philosophy, instead of sand mirror making) .

Warframe uses a tech on some of its warframe ability that blends the textures of the ground pattern into the ability perhaps scourge could use some of that? on a sandy area get a sand shade on a grass area get a grassy shade on metal floors get metal shreds shade ect.

Yeah maybe. I like that idea better then just “we are going to a sand place, lets make a class that normally has nothing to do with elemental magic use sand hurr durr!!”

Were is all the jungle themed elite specs?

Now over all I like the Scourge.
I like most thing about it, the barrier mechanic and the shade summoning and how they interact with the player.
The focus on condis instead of power and so on!
I was just confused about the sand theme.
Thats why i made the topic.
I do appreciate that i got some rly good ideas on why the theme were there.
And I think now that i can accept the sand much more then before(even tho i would like something els over it)

It’s not a retcon of GW1 per se as Palawa Joko has had time to rethink his strategy of conquering since then and the sand is filled with magic (or is, for now). But it’s clear that something is afoot that his undead mummy followers (the Awakened) have begun to have their own goals (conjecture based on seeing Awakened as merchants near the casino).

Read this as it is really our only current source:

(further conjecture) Palawa Joko is beginning to lose his sand-infused magic power source and dominance over the Elona region since an elder dragon has more recently begun eating the magical area and a human god of war have shown up.

Scourge is empowered by the magic desert sands but when married with with a diminishing Palawa Joko element of control, players are learning to either “join the other side” (hence Awakened facial skins coming) or becoming aware of how to use the magic-infused area for themselves in the case of Marjory (which also happens to be another step closer to the concept of Ascension). And don’t think that Kormir isn’t going to show up and protect his people and heritage.
