Q:

Firstly, what is the best weapon set for a power focused necro. I’ve been using axe/focus with staff in the secondary

Secondly, what’s the best stat set for necro for general pve? I was thinking of getting the best of both worlds and going power/precision/condi instead of power/precision/ferocity

Best stat for all professions in PvE is zerker (with some build exceptions where assassin is mixed in to give exactly 100% crit chance).

And best PvE weapon set is dagger/WH + dagger/focus for most situations. Sometimes it changes up though, if you have to range or certain mechanics for some fights.

A part of the answer is to figure out how squishy you can tolerate. There is no one best set of gear for me so I have several; eight sets at one point. I am down to five, now.

Get one set that is aggressive and has precision to help proc critical hits and another that is tanky and has vitality for times when you feel vulnerable.

Beyond that is another dimension to consider, power and condition damage, but you should probably just focus on the number of defensive versus offensive stats. Traits, trinkets, and weapons can reinforce or diversify your build.

Sounds advice do doubt.

However, while I find this sort of guideline useful for a lot of classes, I will have to disagree regarding the necro. Of course for starters, it’s argued the only you way you’ll become better defensively without the crutch of defensive stats is to just play the standard zerk/assassin build and hit the ground running. Learning when to dodge and mitigate damage via deathshroud is just a part of the learning process.

However the main reason I disagree building defensive concerning Necro is because death shroud is perfect as your panic button. Sure guardians can proc aegis and so forth and so on, but as a Necro, deathshroud is truly a great way to help you learn difficult fights where a lot of damage is coming at you. Also it’s integral in the standard dps rotation so you’re going to be in it a lot anyway. If I see I’m getting focused and I’m out of vigor (anet give us a way to regen vigor pl0x) instead of flashing DS like normal, I just stay in it if I’m uncertain whether I’d survive the damage.

Needless to say OP, just because I disagree with Anchoku here doesn’t mean it’s not useful info, and you should definitely take it into consideration if you feel you need the extra survivability. I’m merely pointing out that, as a necro, you can get that extra survivability and then some from death shroud, a mechanic you’ll be utilizing in your DPS rotations anyway. Also keep in mind that, if you’re rocking a lot of toughness gear and you’re, for instance, in a dungeon with 4 other zerkers, there’s a chance mobs might give you extra attention, as they like to focus toughness heavy players, throwing more damage your way (somewhat defeating the purpose of building tankier imo)

In closing, Bhawb pretty much covers it if you’re looking for optimality. For more info check out Spoj’s guide in the sticky.
