Q:
falling damage worth it?
No. Just press F1 in the air. This will probably be fixed, as it’s likely unintentional. Then the trait will be ok.
Depends, exactly. It’s worth turning on for jumping puzzles and for the Grenth temple fight (You hit F1 with this trait and your damage taken is made up with a single life-force skill, plus a free poison field). For everything else, forget about it.

Actually DS used to not soften the drop blows, then it was changed to actually eat the fall damage thus no it is intentional and here to stay (well at least i hope since changing mechanics at whim for no reason except for change is not a good thing *cough blizz cough*)

IIRC ANet used to do a lot of “just because” changes late in the life of GW1 just to keep the PvP meta from getting too stale.
It can be.
Using Death Shroud to prevent death by falling and the Spectral Walk method (Using it when close to the floor resets the “Fall height” so you take damage equivalent to a fall starting where you used it) are more effective since they can stop damage from any height fall.
But these are situational; Spectral Walk is a 60 second cooldown base and Death Shroud is depleted after a decent sized fall (Thus needs to be regenerated before another use) while Toxic Landing will always work, and is much more effective for repeated falling.
So for things like:
- Jumping Puzzles
- WvWvW Terrain usage (Constantly moving up and off ledges to provide breathing room/trick people into killing themselves)
- Open world travelling (Allows going in a direct route without having to stop to get LF)
- Times when you will take falling damage but need to keep DS and the utility(slot)
Toxic Landing becomes worth it.
There’s two kinds of people… The quick and the dead”
the only fall traits I use are for warrior (all the time) and thief (sometimes). as they have really useful effects. I find the necro fall trait is surrounded by superior traits that makes the fall trait a wasted trait slot in my opinion.
Don’t think I said TRAIT enough
I’ve been wanting to try this. In WvW. You’re by a cliff high enough to kill from fall damage. An enemy comes to attack you. You hit Spectral Grasp, dodge, run or jump over the edge before Grasp hits, double tap Spectral Walk before hitting. Does the enemy hit with Grasp follow you or are they stopped by the pebble (cliff edge)?
I was thinking of using this as a solo yak killing defense in one of the enemy BLs.
If DS doesn’t remove Spectal Walks teleport it could also be used at Hills.
Spectral Grasp, Spectral Walk, jump, DS, teleport back up, look down at dead player, /wave
There are falling traits that have some use, like ele’s static field which can also be used to provide swiftness if blasted.
I think it is usefull in WvW specially on borderlands where you have lots of cliffs. It saved my life sometimes, remember that you will not always have DS up.

It’s fun to go gate-bombing in WvW with this trait. Jump down on the rams to proc it, drop a well or two, enter DS and use 4. If you’re a power build this will do a lot of damage and possibly make the siege-ers back up for a sec. Stability from Foot in the Grave helps but isn’t necessary.
Like all the falling traits, I don’t think it has much use outside of WvW.

Pretty sure they’d be stopped, but what does work is to grasp them, roll past them, then fear them off the edge.

Good for wvw jp", thiefs have a great fall skill, and they use it in wvw combat often.
Turn poison field into a fetid ground and I would love the trait.
just have life force and if your doing puzzle use deathshourd u burn out life force insted of health no matter the hight
also its great in wvw cuz u jump off a clift and some poor fool sees u alive and jumps right after you ….)))) believe me it happens alot , end result? u walk away…& they don’t!!!

well…you can if you’re doing lots of small to medium jumps, however, as stated above, necro’s have the ability to basically fall from any distance and survive. While it may seem “situational” for spectral walk glitch or DS, any necro worth half of anything can have their life force refilled very quick, especially in area’s like WvW. In WvW i would recommend not going that and instead going III in that slot so all your blinds give additional chill, which when using plague form in WvW (the only real viable elite in zerg v zerg fighting, since lich form is to single target and a flesh golem dies in seconds) it can cripple an entire zerg. For the DS trick, if you hit the shroud almost the millisecond before you fall, it won’t always eat up all the death shroud no matter how far you fall. And remember with spectral walk, you have to double tap it at a distance that you’re still close to the bottom, it’ll still kill you if you activate your skill 50% through your jump and go back up where you can still die from fall damage.
