As true as Odin’s spear flies,
There is nowhere to hide.
i want my class to be effective in the places you claim it is.
have a good day.
The saddest part is Necromancer was meant to be the selfish dps class, but has one of the lowest overall dps of all professions.
edit: all other professions actually have a better dps build than us. Even Mesmer. Welcome to the bottom of the barrel.

I hear ya Lightsbane, the necro was my 1st legit 80…and still love it…but lately, I’ve nearly given up playing it. Spvp is a joke for a necro in soloq….tagging along with the zerg blob in WvW is not my cup of tea—I prefer to roam; and finally, raiding has been asked to play my condi ranger.
I really really am trying to make necro ‘work’ in Spvp (playing every Meta and making my own outlandish builds to try to have some success) at least…hoping that a buff with new elite/expansion pack is around the corner; but the constant having to rely on a team that supports me is taxing in unranked.
P.S. making a commander druid for solo roaming after work =(

This is not quite right…
The necromancer was never meant to be the selfish dps class. It was meant to be the weakening profession, the one that weaken the enemy to a manageable state for it’s party. If you look closely at it, they go further that way with each patch. Boon removal/corruption is a proof of that mindset.
We can’t say that this doesn’t work in any PvP environment, even if this is not sufficient to allow the necromancer to really shine, it does work.
In PvE… well this is bull*****. The GW2’s PvE is designed in a way that boons and mobility/dodge are far superior to any “weakening” that the necromancer could bring on the table. Then the only thing left for the necromancer are their situational utilities (epidemic) and their DPS. (Un)Fortunately the dev won’t volontarily make any profession outperform the other. And that’s where the shroud hurt us because the inate survivability that it grant don’t allow us to truly reach a state where we can be called “glass canon”. Another thing that force the necro back is the fact that it do have access to minions. Minions are source of dps and they can’t allow a profession to have “permanent” minion and a high dps, which lead to a nerf to base damage… etc.
In the end, everything lead the necromancer into a place where it can only have average dps (thanks minions!), meidum/low survivability/sustain (thanks shroud) and poor support (thanks “weakening” nich). What I’ll say now is sad but… In fact considering all this, we can only say that the necromancer is pretty well balanced at the moment.
A random gw2 video popped up on my youtube recommendations about greatsword reapers, i really enjoyed what i saw and having recently quit wow i decided to give gw2 another go, got to 80 did a bunch of stuff in hot and now i feel like the entire thing was a waste of time.
Outside of solo pve content (which is trivial no matter what profession you are) just cannot enjoy necro at all, PVP wise if you want the class to have low mobility you need to give them pretty good survivability, reapers shroud is not enough. Its just such a pathetic spec, low mobility, average dps (when you can actually hit someone) if you cant hit people you do 0 dps, no survivability, low heals, it all seems to boil down to the reapers shroud.
I genuinely feel that even if you gave gs reapers the mobility of a thief they would still be a completely pointless spec and that is pretty sad.
Pve wise it looks good on paper but what is the point of playing necro when you could play an elementalist and do near double the dps? also at the end of the day the rotation is god awful boring, spam your mainhand auto attack whatever weapon you’re using be it scepter dagger etc to build lifeforce then spam gs gravedigger all day sub 50% is not compelling gameplay at all.
Gs reaper got me into gw2 and quite possibly will leave me uninterested in gw2 just as quick.
The Necromancer (expecially the Reaper specializzation) is one fo the best classes of the game, with the best possible build variations, good weapons to use, the best amount of different kind of Utility skills used of all classes, the best class as offensive supporter, an amazing elite specializzation with strong skills that works good with a large amount of core traits and a new weapon that grant to it a really huge direct damage dps.
All that on the paper…
When you put the necromancer/reaper in the game, every other class can outplay it in almost every situation in survavibility, damage and support (both offensive and defensive). In PvE don’t bring nothing that other classes can’t do (and frequently they do it better), it’s dps is lower than all the other classes, it’s survavibility is granted only from the shroud and don’t scale if there’s more and more enemies or the enemy is stronger than common ones, the gameplay is boring and the few things that is asked to do are really boring (spam epidemic in raid, spam Gragedigger when the boss is under 50%hp hopint to don’t miss a hit to don’t lose all the dps or spam boon corruptions in spvp and then just get ressed by an engi).
The necromancer had to be the worst class to find on your way in the darkness of the night, the one no one want to cross in while fighting in pvp, the one that in pve ignore all his allies and burst down the enemy with huge damage and no regrets.
The big B*st*rd that no one want to face because he can bow your soul to his will and make of you a sandwith and eat you with an hand bound to his back, but at the same time unable to play with his team because simply don’t want to make others steal his glory, for that reason use only brainless minions as allies and care about no others than himself.
That’s a necromancer. That’s what we want.

The warlock of gw2 sounds great! But yes people should fear or try to avoid necromancers because of some dark things.. As in current game mode enemies attacking you like you are a pve mob in soloq.

yeah, greatsword is fun, but faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar from practical. save for encounters of the stupid kind.

Its a real shame, it needs a complete rework, the whole slow moving heavy hitter just does not work in practice especially when you arent even hitting that big compared to other professions.
I live in hope that one day i can raid and pvp with a greatsword but in the meantine i am leveling other professions for pve and will occasionally play the corruption mancer which actually gives necro a bit of pressence in pvp.
Unluckly, the GS had meant to be super a slow weapon. Strong as slow.
Unfortunatly it’s not strong enough if compared to how much is slow…
I already focus my hopes in the next elite specializzation. The torch isn’t my favorite weapon, but it can be a really good melee condition weapon, granting us a Real condition Damage build with the first class that use a torch as a main hand weapon (I still hope).
That’s is why we keep asking for Anet to change Reaper’s Onslaught so the attack speed increase affects Greatsword too.

at this point i don’t believe common sense QoL changes will ever happen for necromancer. the attack speed trait introduced for mesmer’s scepter did wonders. i can’t exaggerate how much better of a weapon it was because of it.
At this point? kitten . I moved to reaper from thief because the past four years on that profession has been largely lacking common sense altogether, and let me tell you, playing off-meta reaper is so much better than off-meta thief.
I don’t think GS needs much. You have to really know when and how to use it to make it work, but when you make it work… it’s absolutely amazing. The PvE damage is horrid, but PvE is so screwed up that aiming to balance around it is just silly at this point. HoT powercreep ruined the game in so many respects.
The real issue is that the necromancer, aside from not spawning with some LF, is well-designed overall. There are some trait lines and skills that need to be tweaked and some QoL changes that would be very helpful here and there, but overall, it’s pretty solid.
The real issue you’re seeing is that the reaper is in fact so well-designed that it’s suffering from the power creep that came with the rest of HoT. Reaper isn’t much better/worse than core necro in most cases, and its use kind of depends on context. That’s how it should be for every spec. That was what ANet said they were trying to do to begin with when announcing HoT. The fact is they screwed up with everything else. The power creep elsewhere is overly-substantial to a point where the good implementation of the reaper and solid foundation of core necro are meaningless. Against core specs, the necro and reaper are actually in fairly excellent spots overall. Not OP, but not UP. It feels good. If we lacked HoT powercreep, it’d probably be a middle-of-the-pack/stronger profession.
