is necromancer worth it?
Necromancers have flaws in all game modes, but they can pull their weight in pvp. In www roaming, they lack the mobility and attrition to win outnumbered fights, even though they are still good necromancer players managing to do so. They are really useful in large scale Www for their boonhate and ranged aoe damage via wells.
In pve, necro is the 2nd least useful class, and aren’t really welcomed in pugs or speedruns. Their selfish nature doesn’t work with the current meta, as they need to be babysitted to reach their max dps potential, and what they bring is situational ( crazy burst damage, boonhate, condition manipulation be it transfer, absorbtion, application, fear and cc, chill). For soloing dungeons, necro is far from the best choice as well since they have 0 access to vigor, blocks, invul, or any kind of active defense.
That said since you’re 76 and the new leveling system is garbage, you should at least level him to 80 and buy cheap gear to see how it works for you.
Thank you for your informative post.
Which classes can solo dungeons with the right gear and build?
Out of curiosity which class is the least useful in pve?
All classes can solo usually, but the best soloer classes are those who can selfbuff really well and have some kind of active defense. Warrior is, in most cases and when reflects isn’t involved, the fastest. Most people say they are the easiest as well since you can recover from a mistake due to their high health pool and good hps, but I still have an easier time with guardian. It’s slower, but the defensive nature of guardians make them a good class for soloing when you like active defense.Warriors, guards, thieves and engis are for me the best classes when I solo. Mesmer is far too slow IMO, and ele is a difficult class to solo with. I usually duo with my ele, and I find it more fun than soloing.
For now the least useful class is ranger in group content, but they are tied with necros. Both aren’t wanted in dungeons, because ranger had 2 things to bring in dungeons and one of them got deleted.
tl;dr with a list:
warrior: fast, not so hard (that’s what she said)
guardian, thief, engi: not so fast, but still reasonable, fun to play
ele: hard to play, faster than guardian or thief
mesmer: easier, slow as hell
necro, ranger: nope.
Don’t listen to others and judge it yourself.
In dungeon, necro is in lower tier, but it’s still viable and able to finish any dungeon.
For soloing, I’ll only recommend either warrior or guardian. They have the most damage neglecting skills compare to other classes.
For wvw roaming, necro is in middle tier. Necro is very good 1v1, however it cannot escape fight like thief or warrior if the situation turns against itself. But if both commit to the fight, necro is very good. So good and bad, hence middle.
For wvw zerging, necro is very good and probably the class that gives you most bags.
It depends entirely if you are playing GW1, or GW2.
If you are playing GW1, necromancer is awesome. If you are playing GW2… what necromancer?

I see there are different opinions about the issue and I think it looks wise to reroll to a thief or warrior. Another question, are minions have low AI or am I doing something wrong? It is hard to make them do things you want them to do. Looks like they have free will most of the time. Also if I roll a thief, can I take part in zergs using melee weapons?
tl:dr
wvw zerg: good
wvw solo: between decent and bad
pvp: decent
pve: bad/unwanted by teams
Btw: It’s Sey-Shi-zo ^.^
Yeah, minions have low AI. They are pretty much unwanted anywhere outside of pvp where you’ll be fighting on small points and minions can do something. Thieves aren’t frontliner in zergs and you won’t make all the loot bags, but using D/D or D/P your role is to shut down the squishies at the ennemy’s backline ( eles, rangers). They aren’t part of the zerg meta, though. You should reroll any class that suits you but keep playing necro, at least to have an idea of what are there flaws and strenghts.
Thank you all for the valuable information you provided.
