spectral grasp. another broken necro skill
I use spectral grasp with about a 90% success rate. I love the skill.
This happens to me, a lot, when I use this skill.
Skip to 3:00. What the hell is obstructing it?
Bull Zooker, do you have any tips for successful use of this skill? It feels like it works less than half the time for me in WvW. I typically want to use it to pull people who are fleeing. I’ll wait until after they dodge and are in range and then fire it. If they swerve a little while running, it misses. When I do land it, it seems to pull the person only part of the way back to me. Come to think of it, it only seems to pull them 100% of the way to me when neither of us is moving.
the interaction between ranged attacks (not just necrotc grasp but even bows, staffs, etf) versus “swerving” targets has been problematic.
You can even see the enemy at 3:00 in Kravicks vid do a quick juke left just before the grasp would connect. This is a glitch that i notice more and more players exploiting. I generally find it especially annoying when i’m using Ghastly Claws (axe) and is interrupted by these means.
Though i quite firmly believe this faulty mechanic to be true I don’t encourage anyone to start exploiting it. I personally find it uncool (especially towards newer players) and counter productive to incorporate into your play style as I am sure this ugly bug will be squashed soon.
Besides, if we wanted to climb aboard the EZ train we wouldn’t have stuck with Necros to begin with. Exploiting this bug goes against what many of us have come to stand for ;D
I’m fairly certain that avoiding by juking or swerving is completely intentional. There are at least two types of missile attacks. One is the “dumb” missile that never changes directions once you fire it. The other is the “smart” missile (for example, DS1) that homes in on your target.
How to use Spectral Grasp Guide:
Its tooltip is "wrong", its 600 range (at least thats max you should use it at), and its also a "knockdown" (well the stopped pull effect causes one most of the time) or plain LF generation, great almost melee cc on bosses if you use dagger, need LF but cant get quite in there (and great to follow up with Dark Path>Life Transfer).
Also never bother to use it on targets that you cant life siphon in terms of dagger use).

There is a difference between homing attacks that do a 260 turn when you dodge/teleport before they would go in your face and then still hit you *cough rifle attacks, most mob and ele projectiles* and a ranged projectile that derps just because you moved 3 steps to the right after going left and then stopped when it started to fly.

Boy I hope that 600 range idea isn’t accurate. It makes it worse than dagger 3.

No its actual projectile goes for the full 1200 (well actually a bit more since it always thinks you are at a highground unless you are shooting it from the depths of the underworld), its just you can only actually use it in a good way if cased from 600~ range.
Sure, the reliability increases the closer you are to the target. But it’s still usable from 900 range and up. I use it a lot to snatch people in WvW, and besides the occasional “obstructed” message on a flat plain I have no complaints with the skill.
Yep it depends on when you use it. I have pretty good luck, I usually only fire it on people running away. If they are running laterally it has a chance to miss, just like staff1. Also if they hit anything anything while being pulled they stop and drop there.
Its such a great skill though (+chill + knockdown +lifeforce) I have a hard time asking for improvement.

On some instance, I’ve seen it make a 90 degree crush to grab someone over like 600y, at other times, it just go straight and miss even if the person was 1 inch from it and it could have made that curve. I’ve even saw it do a complete 180 to follow a teleporting thief who’s Heartseeker me and it did hit him.
Seems to happens more if you’re not on the same elevation. I’m following a dolyak, 1y from it, hitting with my dagger and he’s getting up a small slope: Obstructed. Been on a 30 sec cooldown, it’s kind of not wanting to be on our Utility bar long when it fails on easy shot.

My only issue is when it bugs on flat terrain and pulls the enemy 2 inches because you were 1 step lower than them or it just decided to hook their feet into the floor. Happened a few times in tpvp yesterday when i was trying out a spectral build. Couldnt pull people off the points because they kept getting caught on seemingly flat terrain even when we were both on the same flat floor and close to each other. However when i was on the point and pulled them into the point it worked fine. :/
My successful rate is like 50%, and it’s in PVE!

Yea, its just something that will hopefully be fixed in the future. I’ve found that small changes in terrain will randomly affect my spectral grasp. Sometimes it will work over small rocks, sometimes obstructed. I wish the range finder (red area under the skill) would show if it is obstructed or not.
