the reaper?
So far, I wouldn’t bet on damage equal to those. But it should be fun regardless. Regardless, though, it’s impossible to tell. As this last patch has proven, it really depends on what they do to the balance pass overs and if they rework anything. Certainly it should be better than current Necromancer.

All I can say is, you don’t have to worry now. Because, sooner or later you will have all the classes in your character slot. You will try them all eventually.
And I am one of that ^.^
cheers
The design philosophy for the necro seems to be the same as for the shadow behemoth: look cool while doing nothing meaningful.
So forget about having anything that works well with this game’s mechanics now or never.
That being said, you don’t need that much for open world content so, if you enjoy looking cool while underperformingm, why not??
From a balance perspective the Reaper pretty much has to do more damage in melee than any other class, but that is going to make people in low tier pvp and wvw complain, so it wont happen. GS looks like it will be slightly better than dagger as of now, but they have stated that numbers may change. Which means that they will be nerfed, even though they probably should be buffed. But that is just how Anet handles necros.
But while I care I’ve come to accept that Anet has great ideas but horrible execution. So I’ll be over here enjoying the game with my friends.
If you’re wanting to do as much damage as the other proffs, you’re better off leveling one of those up, since their damage is a known quantity.
That being said, open world pve isn’t about only damage, nor is it particularly difficult. The new patch has made necro quite a bit more fun to play when killing world bosses, going through SW events, etc. so if you enjoy the playstyle you should absolutely keep leveling it! If you’d rather do more damage in melee and be more mobile with a greatsword, warrior is probably what you want.

Does make sense. We are supposed to be reapers not awesome looking teddy bears

Graphics always were always better than gameplay with necro and balance usually uses perfect scenario cases. I’m not sure what they intend to do since “Chill will be enough” is no longer valid.

I honestly dont see the problem with necro damage in pve, with wells, and traits i hit super hard with 100% crit chance and drop every enemy around me within seconds, if you are playing condi in pve ofc your damage is lowbut i have yet to have a single problem with necro in pve in most cases i it harder than any other class i play besides ele and maybe warrior, and when GS comes out its the damage is only gone go higher so ya

Math proves otherwise. Anecdotal evidence about roaming around the world doesn’t keep you from being benched.

The problem isn’t that it’s bad, simply very very low compared to others. Yes wells provide great burst but we don’t have good sustained damage at all. Guardian sword auto attack beats our damage with dagger power build and well even. I do hope the greatsword really makes us do some decent melee damage

This seems to be the issue. Our damage isn’t bad in short bursts. And we can hit extremely hard against single targets but because of the number of enemies we struggle a bit the greater the numbers. Personally, I prefer to run Condi as opposed to power because a condi build has more chances to tag groups than power does. Damage isn’t so much our issue in these situations as it is the ability to deal damage to a higher number of targets more frequently which reaper will achieve that.
As for dungeons, its not our damage holding us back its group utility.

It’s funny, I was doing fractials and a zerk teef was stating how vampiric presence is over powered. I wonder how many might stacking, AI abusing, fiery greatsword twirling, groups he had been in.

The guy who crunches the DPS numbers on YouTube figured out that a traited Power Death Shroud user does less half the dps of every other procession. Less than half of what engineers are doing.
As others have said, reaper should do more damage than pretty much anyone, but it probably won’t. Even if the dps is only average for fully buffed parties, I think reapers will be extremely common in dungeons because they will be able to maintain a ton of might, 100% crit chance, and 25 vuln. Being someone who runs dungeons with pugs a lot I can tell you this isn’t hard to do, but rarely do I see a pug group upkeep 25 might and vuln (might much more common than vuln). Since reapers will be able to do this easily, I think they will very common in pug groups even if they aren’t meta in speed runs.
Another thing that worries me is that reaper will do these big hits that aren’t actually good dps. Gravedigger has a 1.25 second cast, so it will need to hit harder than life blast to even be worth using in boss fights. I’m also worried they will balance the damage assuming you have might, and vuln when all the big telegraph moves should just do amazing damage baseline.
Edit: wow I should read more.
OP, honestly open world pve is so easy I don’t think any complaints are warranted. If anything necros are one of the best classes in open world because of the massive amount of aoes available to tag everything for all the loot.
Also, dps calculations are done on fully buffed groups in optimal gear. This dps is generally calculated over 30 second fights, and is in no way indicative of what classes open world dps is. This is because might, group buffs, number of targets and fight duration are hugely variable in open world.
extra dodges, real stability, mobility skills,
burst skills, sustain, or good support. GG ANET.

Open world pve necro is amazing wtf. Drop wells and move forward everything dies

But then when you run forward into enemies you don’t do much damage with your well on cooldown

Thats complete nonsense. In practical situations the necromancer’s damage is comparable. You’ll have to link the video. Because Its more than likely that they’re either cheesing it hard or going strictly off their burst damage and not DPS.
