This has been said before but,

Scythes as a two hand melee weapon!! Please!!

Could also be made for use by warriors and mesmers perhaps but the addition of scythes to the game would be amazing.

Scythe would be cool. Especially as a melee hybrid condition/damage weapon. Give us more access to torment and some real movement skills would be nice. A Shadow step or something like that would be wonderful. Honestly, Dark Path is bad for closing gaps and has such a long cast time. It would be nice to have a GOOD movement skill for a change.

Personally I’d love to see a defensive 2-handed cleave weapon.
With pulls instead of leaps and charges.
So it stays in the concept of a low mobility attrition class

sort of like guardian with a greatsword, i can dig that. could even make the skills similar.

Odd thought, what if instead of an actual pull, the necro stabbed the sword into the ground, causing a wall to pop up around him in a ring (say at 600 range) that launched enemies away from it (inside the ring, they’re launched toward the necro. Outside the ring, launched away). The wall would only last a brief moment, but I feel that could be a distinct mechanic that functions similarly to a pull, but feeling very, very different.

Life steal cleaving greatsword.

You see, the problem I have with giving the greatsword to the necromancer is its way too common of a weapon in PvE. Its so popular with every profession that uses it except maybe for the Ranger. And even on them it seems like a fairly popular choice. Giving the greatsword to the necromancer would only serve to decrease diversity in the community as you can bet without a doubt tones of people will use a greatsword on a necromancer considering it would probably become there only cleaving weapon option for melee.

Not to mention that some of the most popular greatswords would end up getting a spike in price.

As for Flavor, Their is nothing saying that a necromancer couldn’t use a greatsword. The Problem I see is more with style. What could a greatsword do that wouldn’t FEEL better being done on a Scythe for the necromancer? Open a door to the Underworld letting out all the horrible minions to attack your foe? Which would feel better? Doing it with a large clunky sword? Or with a malicious looking Sickle cutting through to the depths?

But perhaps you could explain it to me. Why do you want a Greatsword? Why do you demand a greatsword over a Scythe or just a normal sword as a cleaving weapon?

I could be wrong, but I think that they have said that classes will get access to existing weapons first. That’s why people are asking for greatsword over scythe. We only have access to one two handed weapon on land. That’s why people want greatsword as a melee cleave weapon. A one hand sword would just give 3 new skills where a greatsword would give 5. Granted they could add another offhand but we already have a decent number of offhands

A Greatsword on a necro would have to be a control/sustain weapon rather than damage. That way, we still have the damage route in dagger/warhorn. Necro Greatsword, ideally, would be more of a tanking weapon. You do some damage, but if you really cared about damage output primarily, you would choose something else (that we already have).

I think Hammer is a better fit for Necro because of this reason. I can envision an AoE pull with PBAoE cleave (perhaps a direct damage mark) producing interesting results on a Necro. A decent chaining AA with a boon eater on either #1 or 2 with a mark, a pull and a burst or strong defensive utility (perhaps a LF generating 2s block?) on 3,4,5.

I think it would be great if they coexisted. A greatsword for a life siphoning weapon and a hammer as a tanky control oriented pbaoe weapon

The scythe is debatable as they basically turn staves into scythes on necros.

I personally would want a great axe as it’s the classic weapon of an executioner. I also think the necro badly needs a cleave weapon. Though new weapons are not likely. I don’t want it to be a great sword as pretty much every class has it anyways. Hammer is one of the least used, but I have a hard time seeing it fit on a necro… perhaps the concept of it being close-range physical utility marks that do a lot more damage than staff marks (as it stands, mark damage is a joke and the only reason anyone would trait “spiteful marks” is power builds trying to eek a sliver more damage for long range DPS from safety in WvW over much more useful traits… would be nice if it actually had a real purpose).

Another thing I’d like to see is main hand focus. This weapon as having strong Torment stacking as it’s main draw – the fact that Torment seems to fit necro so strongly yet to have such weak access to it is funny to me (especially as it’s attached to a skill that STOPS the target from moving). Also there are no classes that can really stack it – the highest being Warrior with high condition duration to allow Impale overlap and runes for 12 stacks (thief might be able to push past 12, though the jump back hinders that). Necro being the class that can self stack to 25 I think would be fitting. Also giving it the Skull Fear that thieves have been stealing from necros for so long would be poetic – and a beautiful combo to go with Torment.

Don’t get your hopes up too much…….
You’ll have less disappointment if things don’t live up to your expectation, which from history, happens a lot to necro.

I personally would rather wait a year for a scythe then completely bury the chance of us getting one by making the weapon redundant by giving us a greatsword. A sword would be fine, But I’m not too fond of that idea either. I would be happier with a Mace then either of those weapons as for a weapon that already exists within the game. Considering it would be a call back to the Old DnD days of a dark Cleric.

A Mace would give us a new melee option and wouldn’t take up design space that could be given to the Scythe. Its also a rather under used weapon that you don’t see a whole lot of. You Might see a Guardian with one occasionally but over all its fairly rare. Especially considering that only 2 professions can use them.

But that’s My opinion.

And the Elementalist summons weapons. I don’t see this as an issue. And they don’t turn into scythes, they just have the image of one for a brief moment.

Greatsword best exists (assuming we get every weapon) as a lower-damage dagger option. Why do I say lower damage? Because it should have AoE damage, meaning per-target should be weaker, but a good AoE option.

Hammer would be AoE control.

If they do introduce Scythes later, have them play around a lot with pushing/pulling mechanics, and executions. It’d be entirely fine to have a really unique “Death” experience.

Looking at the guardian hammer and ele’s LH. Their auto attack function in quite similar ways. Maybe we can have one that do a 1.5s chill at the end of the chain.

Or you could have it do something remotely as good as Symbol of Protection & the AoE burst + blast finisher on Lightning Hammer. A chill at the end of the chain is pretty pedestrian by comparison. I could go for a Whirl hitting a 180 radius and applying the chill to all struck. That would be somewhat close to the value of the other 2 chains, but still not as valuable (IMO).

I was thinking the third attack in the auto attack chain could be an aoe chill that damages (much like the sigil of hydromancy). A blast finisher somewhere on the weapon set would be amazing
