why axe over dagger
Like person before me said. It is ranged weapon for power build. Usually used with DS build.
Here is link to recently addded DS build guide on Dulfy.net: http://dulfy.net/2014/06/30/gw2-necromancer-pve-guide-by-spoj/#Death_Shroud_Build
Your question should be “Why dagger over axe?”
Axe has it’s used but dagger wins 9/10, that one time being that it doesn’t have range on auto.
It’s certainly not 9/10 in favour of the dagger.
The main selling point is the high damage auto attack, so as soon as you get kited you’re better off with the axe.
The immobilized and healing doesn’t make up for the much more reliable lf regen and untargeted aoe cripple and boon strip. Also, you’ll get more damage in DS with Axe Traning, which is where most of your damage comes from in pvp anyway.
Have been playing with a DS build for a little while now. I use both dagger mainhand and axe: dagger for building LF, then switch to (traited) axe for DS.
It works very well because mainhand dagger does a lot faster LF generation and a higher damage, maintaining high DPS outside DS. Then of course switch to axe for a even high DS DPS.
Of course if you need range outside DS, use axe/warhorn.
I can tell you that as a peripheral in wvw, you are not going to want to go stab a hammer train at melee range. Axe let’s you be a safe distance a way to focus targets when wells and the like are on cooldown, but it’s also a tad harder for wvw builds to get axe training without giving up 6 in SR or well recharge.

A blind man could see Axe #2 comming a mile away, nah Dagger all the way for me.

It really depends on the situation. Dagger excels in small groups and pvp, axe excels in big zergs due to the range and axe 3, which is stupid powerful.
I would never run Axe except in WvW and if you already have dagger MH equipped and don’t want to run staff. It is not that good of a weapon, but if you have to use it, you have to use it.
I feel axe lacks something. Axe 3 is really good, 2 is okish but the auto needs something. Maybe more damage or aoe or more range, i dont know but i would like aoe on the auto the most.

Depends on how they want to go with the weapon.
Axe 3 is amazing and the only change I’d ever make is a blast finisher (although that might be too good). I’d either take the vuln off the Auto and put it on the #2 so that it stacks vuln (which would be a nice synergy with focus, so you could “burst” a crapton of vuln), and then buff the Auto’s damage and make it cleave. Or I’d leave the auto basically as is but with cleave, and change the #2 to a frontal cone burst skill.

It most certainly is 9/10 for dagger my friend. Dagger #2 I rarely use. 3 and auto already make it a great weapon and are the reasons I take it over axe.
Every power necro uses axe. Where?
Why not take both for a pvp setting.

Reasons why arena net has Axe as the way it is?
Answer: The reason why axe has single target is because Necro has 4 weapon sets for main hand. Axe, Dag, Scepter, Staff. Axe Ranged Power DPS, Dag Melee Power DPS.
Scepter Condition AoE melee/ranged, Staff Condition AoE Melee/Range.
As Stated above this. 2 Weapons for power based builds for melee and ranged, 2 condition based Weapons for melee/ranged setting. Besides Axe#3 is not the only thing you can rely on for AoE, Horn 5, Focus 4, Dag 5, DS 4, Sc#3, Staff #2,#3,#4,#5. you have enough dps that hits 5 targets than any other class would need. You just need to know how to utilize it.

The only thing I disagree with is staff as a primarily condition based weapon, as it can work in power WvW builds as for general ranged AoE pressure, and marks give us a bit of extra control over the battlefield, although not as much as guard or ele staff skills. If we ever gained a melee cleaving 2handed weapon such as a scythe or greatsword or whatever, I’d probably drop the staff and keep axe and horn for its utility and mid ranged damage, and pick up the new weapon, especially if it had some awesome whirling spin to win type skill <3

For me, I use dagger in PvE and axe in WvW, strictly for the extra range. If I get face to face with a true melee class in WvW I will not last. I have to stay on flank or mid-to-back line, and axe gives me the opportunity to still hit enemies from there.
The real reason why you should ever use an axe is because the axe mastery trait damage boost works with death shrouds auto attack.
Or you could swap to staff and get the same damage.

Sorry, dagger is just a beast,I can kill a mesmer with 2-3 auto attack combos.

I don’t think it does anymore, does it?
I believe it still works, or at least I don’t remember any change that said it didn’t, unless they stealthed it. It just doesn’t provide better damage than staff, now that staff has the double sigil slot.
whats the point of dps if you cant even use it? being in point blank range is not exactly the smartest move in this meta with all the cc flying around at least that’s what I have found, as it is I can barely do anything lately and my combat log is filled with stun stun knockback immob up the backside followed by some more stun knockback interrupt…. loving the slow cast times vs instant casts of other classes atm
