They would be OP if there was no CD (in certain situations), but I do wish they’d get rid of the degen, it isn’t like a single minion with no degen is too good.
I suspect degeneration might be there to keep Jagged Horrors from being OP but it is hard to see it having too much effect outside of Lich form. Arenanet could have given no degeneration but made no more than one JH available at one time, instead. Perhaps the sound of its dying was just too awesome.
I doubt it. I’m not even convinced Jagged Horrors do anything at all.
The problem is, it appears to be balanced around the assumption that anyone using Staves is going to be going full into Death Magic— having 100+ toughness from PotH from five Jagged Horrors might be a problem, for example, or either of the GM traits from that line.
But people don’t, which makes jagged horrors utterly useless.
I think the issue with Jagged Horrors come in when you start synergizing the that one Minion with everything else. Jagged Horrors, alone, are pretty… Uh… Bad. Really bad.
Assuming, for a second, that they took away the Degeneration on the Jagged Horrors and put a cap of 5 on them; This is 80 additional Toughness to a Minion Master build than on Live, as well as ~480 addition healing every 3 (4?) seconds assuming Vampiric Master is taken, as well as four additional Death Nova zones on death. For the sake of simplicity, we’ll leave it at those being the -only- benefits that would be gained. That is an absolutely enormous boost to a build for a single Minor Trait.
Frankly, Arenanet was kitten for having put Reanimator as a Minor. I haven’t the slightest idea as to what they may have been thinking.

What other Minor Trait in the game would be able to reliably give you a damage cushion, a decent chunk of healing, 80 Toughness and more Combo fields?
As stated. The Minor Trait itself is not good. Paired with everything else? Five of them would be rather stupid for a Minor.
I don’t think it would be OP. The necro was supposed to be this class that no one wants to mess with. It was supposed to be an incredibly resilient fighter that won long-term battles. Having an undead horde supports this. Extra toughness supports this. Extra healing supports this. Having to choose between the long term damage of the minions or their death novas is a serious mind screw for the necro’s enemies.
I think it would fit the class and make minion builds more viable. Hell, it’ll make the staff that much better to use. Set up traps while your undead distract? Yes please. I assume the trait sucks now because Anet is balancing for PvP. But really, do people actually last so long that they’ll be steamrolling with 5 jagged horrors? If so, it seemed like they were already doing something right before the extra minions got involved. I would support having 5 nondegenerating horror. I would even support it if they had less degen than they did now. It’s a weak trait but I like the death magic line alot, even for non minion builds. If it was buffed, it wouldn’t be an inefficient use of trait points but more of a buffer for minion and non-minion builds alike
Remove the degen. Cap the numbers you can have to one or two. If two, keep cooldown.
Keep degen on lich version if needed.
Problem solved. Everyone’s happy (except those who don’t want Death Magic to include mandatory mm traits).
I don’t know you guys, but i would not use minions ever just because the stupid appearance they have, (even if they are buffed in the future i will not use them, ever),

Do not forget that the lich form elite can pop 5 of them with a single mark. That i suspect is where the real issue is hiding out.
The game seems like a weird mix of code reuse (traits that trigger skills via different means, like say dodge) and copy and paste (weird kitten AI behavior that seems to plague only the necromancer minions).
If the Jagged Horror didn’t lose health, and you could continually spawn them (with the 30 second ICD in mind), I think it would make the Death Magic tree much more appealing. It would allow someone who went 20 into the tree for some reason other than minions (traiting into Staff, etc.) to actually benefit from the minor traits in the tree, and it would be nice to have minions without devoting the majority of our utilities and traits towards the minions themselves. A nice middle ground, I suppose.
They used to not degenerate. I remember seeing a necro in beta that was followed around by about 16 jagged horrors as well as the usual minions. Just think, that’s 400 extra toughness :o

400 extra toughness is more than the difference between Light and Heavy armor.
No health degeneration would make this trait even -worse-. At least right now I can tediously wait around for it to die if I want to sneak past something , or get into a fight where having pets is a huge liability, or get into a situation where I’m going to want to break combat mode asap.
I’ve stopped putting points into death just because I hate this trait more than any other. Sorry, staff major traits. I know you’re (barely) the best of a bunch of terrible options for my PvE condition necro, but I really don’t want that worthless jagged horror tagging along so i guess I’ll just shove all these points into blood magic even though everything there is kind of garbage. I would rather have no minor trait than the jagged horror.
