heya, i know there are a number of threads floating around about this, but i didn’t want it to get buried at the bottom of a page.
these are my thoughts on the Slash – Kick – Pounce combo for Ranger in a 5 minute vid.
edit – another short vid going over the rest of the sword skills:

Great explanation and examples. I’m going to give Sword a go (I rarely use it just because I like GS thematically) with your outlook.
The video does want to make me try using sword some more. I liked it in concept, but I would get frustrated finding myself unable to dodge.

You can dogde… You got skill 2 and 3 and you have lightning reflexes to get away and in some cases it is possible to spam dodge roll and you can roll away. The problem is that the sword is on auto attack, so it will grab target again. But you can dogde
Pretty nice video friend. And what about PvE?I know that it works pretty well in PvP but im saying all this time that theres a very small change that youll have to chace down a mob.And as a beastmaster build i dont want the leaps but the might buff to my pet..
So, rangers get the only weapon that #1 autoattack has to be turned off. Sure, it may take some practice, but its practice to get around using what really seems to be a bug and not a feature.
I’ve tried to use 1h sword in non-auto-attack mode, but it just makes my finger weary. And demoing on non attacking golems just doesn’t do it for me.
I’m also unconvinced that including something like a movement skill in a chain is a good idea. Its only available at a specific time in the chain, and everyone knows that.

Yeah, I know. I had difficulties using normal dodges as well as things such as finishers in pvp. In the end, I turned off auto attack on the sword and used it for quite a while, but I would occasionally lose target and go flying away somewhere else like he was doing in the video only I wasn’t doing it intentionally. Understanding the mechanics better, I might play around with it some more. I’ve used it quite a bit in Pvp and it can be fun with a dagger for lots of evasion. Also, the 2 skill can be used for movement as well if you turn around before using it and then turn back around for the second half.
Just don’t shift-right click; you wouldn’t want to do this on a weapon that attacks so quickly and follows your target anyway, regardless of the “root” that it applies. 1H sword is simply one of the best weapons rangers have.
Feral plz post ur build, im curious
Very nice. I use sword/dagger in my (current) build and I never knew that you could double leap on the third part of the chain.

imo, if it is a bug, it is a very positive one, akin to the skiing bug in Tribes that was later developed into a full feature of the game. it gives the player creative options within the scope of a single skill, which makes fights far more interesting both to watch & to play.
i have posted a 2nd video in the top post going over the rest of the 1h sword skills for ranger.
Going to have to definitely play with this some more. Use GS ands Sword and it was more a swap to if I was being ignored and wanted to buff up pet somemore. Was alway wary of switching off auto and losing some of the dps but seeing all the mobility really helps my build out.
with sword/dagger theres maybe 3 seconds where i CANT dodge. it amazes me that people think you can’t.(turn off the autoattack and press 1.) with the +50% endurance gain and lightning reflexes combined with 3 dodges on weapons alone ….the only way you’ll believe for a fact it’s viable is to go into WvWvW and find your self in the middle of a zerg dodging almost everything.

Technically, with a Sword/Dagger combo, only two abilities (3 and 4) are true Evades (i.e. your hitbox is nullified for the duration). While using Hornet’s Sting/Monarch’s Leap or the Autoattack-Off trick your character’s hitbox remains and is still susceptible to damage from AoE, slash and projectile attacks.
It would be inadvisable to rush into a zerg with the intent to stay alive while using a Sword/Dagger combo.
