3 newbie ranger questions
The spike trap seems to not break stealth when I try it in controlled tests. If I put the spike trap directly on the target, it triggers and I go into stealth after that. If I use it in a WvW fight, it seems like the stealth is often broken. What are the possible reasons? Can someone walk into the spike trap after it’s been triggered and get damage?
A target walking into the trap after it is set will break stealth.
On initially dropping the trap, there is a small time delay before stealth takes effect. This allows you to drop a trap directly on a target and then slink off under cover, provided you do no further damage which would break that stealth.
Yes, the spider causes the immobilize not you. Seth answered question 2. Your pet choices are pretty solid. Wolf is always an option for WvW/PvP, but your pet choices are top notch.
Thx much for the help!
Now it’s just tons of practice…
All of the spiders F2 work kinda like Sharpening Stones but for the spider. you press the f2 key just before you want it and the next x amount of attacks by your spider does something, in this case next 1 attack causes immob.
pet wise fluffball is right you have pretty much hit the nail on head. for any non-beast-master build I generally go Wolf/Drakhound or Wolf/jungle spider depending on weather i want the poison from the spider or extra knockdown form drakhound. Wolf is just a solid choice for any competitive play.
other pets that you might want to consider/experiment with are the other spiders, the Chill bird/dog/cat (i only use the bird), river drake and jaguar
Thx much for the help!
On the wolf, if you’re using a condi build, are you using the fear just to take pressure off of you and let the condis work? Or is it something you can reliably use to interrupt?
I was hoping the stealth from the traps would fill the role of dropping pressure and allowing repositioning, but it seems like only frost traps can do this and even that is pretty tricky (if bonfire or another trap field is doing damage, stealth from the frost trap still gets cancelled for me).

Wolf gets fear, and KD too, no matter what your build is, pets will still hit hard/semi hard, because they have their own stats.
For the trapper runes, just place them behind you, then reposition to avoid triggering and bait them into the trap, if youre using SB use Sigil of Incapacitation, this helps a lot for kiting +SB4.
Traps are not supposed to be use all at the same time, unless its pvp, you have a whole lot of space in WvW for clever positioning. Hope this helps Fellow mesmer/ranger.
the fear from the wolf is a use full tool, which increases in usefulness when you a roaming with a fried or two.
things you can use it for
- Getting people away from you for some breathing space
- Running people of an edge
- disrupting a thief stealth spam (running him out of his shadow refuge to reduce stealth time)
- fearing people off siege
- fearing people out of the camp cap circle (stopping them for getting to the circle in the first place.
- fearing people in to a trap of setting them up for a entangle
the next couple a particularly great in small groups
- fearing people off rezzes/stomps
- fearing people away when you are rezzing/stomping someone
one you start thinking about then you will think up even more uses for it
another thing to note wolf like all dogs will use the kd as the first skill after its swapped to. I typically have my none wolf pet out most of the time and swap to my wolf for a Fear or KD.
example
- you get downed
- opponent starts to stomp you, you use thunder clap (down skill 2)
- opponent starts to stomp you, you swap to wolf it kd your opponent
- opponent starts to stomp you, you use F2 wolf fears you opponent
- opponent starts to stomp you, thunder clap has recharged
if you are in a duo situation you friend has had ample time to rez you
